The morphological characteristics between male and female of three species, Chaenogobius urotaenia, C. sp. MR, C. sp. BW, collected from June 1996 to Aug. 1999, Korea was studied. Of 13 characters to be studied, 12 characters with exception of caudal fin ray length were significantly different among three species and these three species were distinguished each other by the results of the multiple comparison test (REGWQ test). Interspecific differences in female was distinct in body depth, head length, caudal peduncle length, caudal peduncle depth, snout length, pectoral fin ray length; In particular, C. sp. MR was shorter in upper jaw length, anal fin ray length and eye diameter, and to be smaller in head depth and head width than other two species. Chaenogobius urotaenia was longer in pelvic fin ray length. In case of male, there was not characters to distinguish each one among three species; Chaenogobius urotaenia was longer in head length, eye diameter and pelvic fin ray length than other two species, C. sp. MR to be longer in caudal peduncle length, but shorter in snout length and anal fin ray length, and to be lower in head depth. C. sp. BW was higher in body depth and caudal peduncle depth, and to be longer in upper jaw length and pectoral fin ray length. Both of male and female among three species didn't have any difference in caudal fin ray length. [Chaeogobius urotaenia, C. sp. MR, C. sp. BW, morphological characteristics].
The freshwater fish fauna and physical characteristics of streams in Yeosu peninsula and Geumo Islands were surveyed at thirty nine stations in the period of 2003 and 2005. Most of the streams were short in length and narrow in flowing water width. Main materials of riverbed in most stations were cobble, pebble and gravel; those in the stations adjacent river mouth gravel and sand. In the river type, eighteen stations out of surveyed stations were upstream type: Aa. Thirty nine fish species belonging sixteen families were caught in this survey region. Among them twenty seven species were primary freshwater fishes and nine were peripheral. In the species composition of each family, there were the most species in Cyprinidae and Gobiidae, twelve and ten species, respectively. Endemic species of Korean peninsula in this region were eight species. One exotic fish species, Lepomis macrochirus was found in Yeosu peninsula. Dominant species in each district was Zacco temminckii in Yeosu peninsula, Rhinogobius brunneus in Dolsan Island, Leucopsarion petersii in Geumo island and Oryzias latipes in Gae island. In the analysis of community structure, it was appeared that the community of Yeosu peninsula was the most diverse and stable in this region; as the size of island became smaller, diversity and richness of community decreased. Kichulchoia brevifasciata did not caught in this survey, and it is possible that the species was extincted in this island. Acanthorhodeus gracilis and L. petersii were reported firstly in this region.

On April. 2016, the anadromous icy goby caught at Shinbong-cheon, Tongyeong shi, Gyeongsangnam-do transported to the laboratory of Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) and observed spawning behavior and egg development and larvae. In aquarium, males make the nest under stone and waiting female entering. Fertilized eggs attached under the stone in the nest. Male protected the fertilized eggs until hatching. The size of the club-shaped eggs were 3.2~3.4 mm in the major axis and 0.6~0.8 mm in minor axis (n=10). The eyed eggs were hatched after 168 hrs in a range of water temperatures (18.0~20.0℃). The total lengths of newly hatched larvae were 4.1~4.4 mm (n=5) and these larvae had 32~33 (12~13+20) myotomes and transparent oval yolk. Three days after hatching, the pre-larva (4.9 mm in total length) has opening mouth and rectum. Post-larva with 5.2 mm total length have melanophore on air bladder, rectum, base of membranous caudal fin and 9~10 melanophores ventral row on the tail.
This study aimed to examine the early life history of Trident goby (Tridentiger brevispinis) by observing their egg development and juvenile fish morphology. The average size of mature eggs was 1.13~1.41 (1.30±0.07) mm (n=30), and 0.70~0.86 (0.79±0.04) mm (n=30) in long diameter and short diameter, respectively. The incubation period at 24±1℃ ranged from 167~228 h. The newly hatched larvae measured 2.31~2.78 (2.51±0.18) mm (n=30) in total length (TL), and their mouth and anus were not yet open. At 3 days after hatching, the preflexion larvae reached 2.84~3.10 (2.98±0.10) mm in TL, where in their yolk absorption was complete and their mouths began to open. At 19 days after hatching, the larvae reached the flexion stage, measuring 4.02~4.62 (4.36±0.19) mm in TL. The tip of their notochord was bent upward. At 30 days post-hatching, the larvae reached the postflexion stage, measuring between 5.04~6.36 (5.76±0.51) mm in TL, with the tip of the caudal fin bent at 45°. After 54 days, the larvae had reached the juvenile stage, measuring between 7.43~9.84 (8.48±0.90) mm in TL, and were differentiated by their constant number of fins (6 first dorsal, 12 second dorsal, 11 anal, and 10 ventral fins). This study found that T. brevispinis had larger fertilized eggs and a greater number of myotomes in hatching larva than similar species. Additionally, the distribution of melanophores in T. brevispinis was distinct from that in other similar species, making it easy to distinguish them morphologically.
For Odontamblyopus lacepedii with small and turbid eyes, the gross structure and histology of the olfactory organ, which is important for its survival and protection of the receptor neuron in estuarial environment and its ecological habit, was investigated using a stereo, light and scanning electron microscopes. Externally, the paired olfactory organs with two nostrils are located identically on each side of the snout. These nostrils are positioned at the anterior tip of the upper lip (anterior nostril) and just below eyes covered with the epidermis (posterior nostril). Internally, this is built of an elongated olfactory chamber and two accessory nasal sacs. In histology, the olfactory chamber is elliptical in shape, and lined by the sensory epithelium and the non-sensory epithelium. The sensory epithelium of a pseudostratified layer consists of olfactory receptor neurons, supporting cells, basal cells and lymphatic cells. The non-sensory epithelium of a stratified layer has swollen stratified epithelial cells and mucous cells with acidic and neutral sulfomucin. From these results, we confirmed the olfactory organ of O. lacepedii is adapted to its ecological habit as well as its habitat with burrows at the muddy field with standing and murky waters.
A gobiid fish, Parioglossus dotui Tomiyama is described from 359 specimens collected at Cheju-do and Pusan, in August 1994 of 1986. This is the first definitive record of the species in the Korean waters. Parioglossus dotui having a small-sized body usually is found swimming in schools. The branchiostegals are 5 in number on each side. It grows up to 40mm in total length. Most of ventral fins are separated and connected with rudimentray membrane. In this species, the lateral line were indistincet or absent. The caudal fin slightly emarginates or truncates in both sexes, with a dark spot at the border of the base. It Inhabits inlet waters and estuaries of rivers. "Deungsul mang-dug" is proposed as Korean name of this species.
Seven species of the order Perciformes collected from coastal waters of Cheju Island, Korea were redescribed as new to Korean fish fauna. They are as follows: Girella melanichthys (Richardson) and Kyposus bigibbus Lacepede of the family Kyphosidae; Chaetodon wiebeli Kaup of Chaetodontidae; Istigobius campbelli (Jordan and Snyder) of Gobiidae; Gymnapogon japonicus Regan of Apogonidae; Parupeneus chrysoplueron (Temminck and Schlegel) of Mullidae; Nemipterus japonicus (Bloch) of Nemipteridae.
To study the composition and distribution of the ichthyoplankton in Kwangyang Bay, they were sampled at eight stations from February to December 1990, Abundance was the highest in June, and the number of taxa was the highest in August. Engraulis japonicus, Leiognathus nuchalis, Konosirus punctatus and Argyrosomus argentatus were dominant among 6 taxa of pelagic eggs. Engraulis japonicus, Gobiidae, Korwsirus punctatus, Argyrosomus argentatus and Leiognathus nuchalis were dominant among 21 taxa of fish larvae. The number of taxa was smaller than the previous study. Abundance during winter was low due to the reduction of abundance of winter spawning species. Ammodytes personatus and Enendrias fangi.
Our aim was to compare the community structure of fish in the coast of Wando Island between 2001 and 2013. Using a gape net with wings, we collected 61 taxa, wherein the most dominant species was Engraulis japonicus. The sea temperature in the middle layer of the survey station in 2001 (after June) was obviously higher than that in 2013, which was < $20^{\circ}C$. Except for Thryssa kammalensis in 2013, the log transformed individuals of seven dominant species, selected using a SIMPER (similarity-percentages procedure) analysis, decreased. Decreases in the individuals of Gobiidae spp., the warm-water species Trichiurus japonicus and Conger myriaster, and the migratory species Syngnathus schlegeli, Setipinna taty and Sardinella zunasi, which arrive in the southern coastal waters of Korea during summer-autumn, could be due to decreasing sea temperature in 2013. Thus, fish species diversity, estimated from rarefaction and k-dominance curves, declined in the coastal waters of Wando Island from 2001 to 2013, resulting in a significant difference in fish community structure.
A hypogean gobiid, Luciogobius pallidus was described as the first record from Korea and also as the westernmost record of the species from the world, based on four specimens (31.2~53.6 mm SL) collected from Jeju Island, Korea. The species is characterized by having yellowish orange body color with I, 10~11 second dorsal fin rays, I, 10~12 anal fin rays, 13~15 pectoral fin rays, and 36 vertebrae as well as small embedded eyes beneath the skin. A new Korean name, "Juhong-mi-ggeun-mang-dug" was proposed for the species.
