  • Roadside measurement of ultrafine particles, black carbon, and NOx was carried out to investigate air pollution at a junction area contaminated with vehicle emissions in Seoul from March 19 to 23, 2007. Diurnal variation of ultrafine particles, black carbon, and $NO_x$ concentrations at a roadside showed minimum at around 2-4 a.m. and two peak modes during the morning and evening rush hours. Since these pollutants might be mainly emitted from vehicles, the roadside was highly contaminated with vehicles.

  • It is an after-school material for elementary school student based on STEAM education which has a theme of water pollution as a global issue. First of all, we take a look at various ways of measuring water pollution and among them, we include experiment for student to know about the water pollution by using indicator organisms. Next, we examine how some elements in our daily life affect on water and provide class with systematically technological and engineering solution. With this text book, we let the student recognize environmental problem and seek for the solution about it. Therefore, it helps student to connect with stream of thought.

  • As conservation of global environment has becoming a major outstanding issue of the world, the International Maritime Organization(IMO) has been legislation a convention for prevention of air pollution from ships. By the new convention, use of air pollutants such SOx, NOx, Freon and Halin Gas shall be restricted. In this regards, analysing these requirements of the convention is required as the cinvention will also be applied in restriction of descharging exhaust gases from ships by estsblishing a requirement of Sox and NOx discharged. The purpose of this study is as follows; 1) Introdcuing of the backgrounds of legislating the convention for prevention of air pollution from ships and major contents of the convention and a countermeasuures in the convention by Korea 2) Reviewing by analyzing the influence in domestic industries concernd by restriction of SOx, NOx in exhaust gases and sulpher content of fuel oil 3) Preparing a countermeasure in the convention properly.

  • The major source of carbon monoxide (CO) at the Earth's surface is the incomplete combustion of biomass and fossil fuels. Because the global lifetime of CO is about two months, it can be used as a tracer for pollution from anthropogenic activities and biomass hurtling. In this paper, we introduced the principle and algorithm of the Measurement of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT) instrument for global CO monitoring. The MOPITT instrument, which was launched on the Satellite Terra in 1999, measures CO column and mixing ratio based on gas correlation radiometry. CO levels can be determined by a retrieval algorithm based on the maximum likelihood method minimizing the difference between observed and modeled radiances. MOPITT level 2 data (HDF format) can be downloaded through the Earth Observing System (EOS) data gateway of NASA. ASCII files of CO parameters can be extracted from HDF files, and then temporal and spatial distributions can be obtained. Finally, we showed an example of CO monitoring in April 2000. The locations of forest fires and distribution of MOPITT CO clearly indicated that not only anthropogenic emissions but also forest fires play an important role in CO levels and global CO distribution. Our introduction to MOPITT and the example of MOPITT data interpretation would be helpful for scientists who want to use the EOS data.

  • Recently, as the amount of particulate matter blowing from China increases, the domestic air environment is rapidly deteriorating. This pollution of the atmosphere greatly affects the light energy reaching the ground. Particularly, since the light enters the solar cell module in various forms, the amount of input energy of the solar power generation system may be changed depending on the ratio of direct beam irradiation and diffused horizontal irradiation. In this paper, we analyze how the ratio of direct beam component and diffused component on global horizontal irradiation varies with the atmospheric conditions. In addition, the reliability of the regression equation, designed to decompose the global horizontal irradiation into horizontal direct beam irradiation and diffused horizontal irradiation, was verified according to the level of air pollution. So, we derive the most suitable decomposition model for use in domestic climatic conditions in Korea by comparing the ratio of direct and diffuse component on the horizontal which is calculated with Perez model and Watanabe model using the meteorological weather data observed for 14 months. Finally, to reduce the error of the transposition result, we verified the reliability of the decomposition which depends on the atmospheric environment.

MOPITT (Measurement of Pollution in The Troposphere) 기기가 개발되어, 1999년에 지구관측위성인 Terra에 탑재되어 CO 및 CH$_4$ 모니터링을 수행하고 있다. • The escalating growth of industrial sectors has led to a pervasive global problem—oil pollution, particularly in industrial areas. The release of substantial volumes of oil and its by-products into the environment has resulted in extensive contamination. Multiple factors contribute to the entry of these substances into water bodies and soils, thereby inflicting irreparable consequences on ecosystems, natural resources, and human health. Consequently, it becomes imperative to comprehend the characteristics and behavior of oil pollution, anticipate its impacts, and develop effective mitigation strategies. Understanding this intricate issue requires considering the physicochemical properties of the environment, the interactions between oil and sediments, and biological factors such as evaporation and dissolution. Although the oil industry has brought about remarkable advancements, its activities have raised significant concerns regarding pollution from extraction and production processes. Oil-rich nations face a particularly challenging predicament of soil pollution caused by petroleum compounds. The areas surrounding oil exploration mines and refineries often endure contamination due to oil leakages from storage tanks and transmission lines resulting from deterioration and damage. Investigating the dispersion of such pollutants and devising methods to remediate petroleum-contaminated soil represent crucial and intricate issues within the realm of environmental geotechnics.

  • Human activities have become a major factor that significantly changes the global environment. Mankind has increasingly used land, water, minerals and other natural resources since the beginning of industrialization, and future growth in the population and economy is thought to further enhance the impact upon the Earth. The global climate, biogeochemical process and natural ecosystems are closely linked with one another, and changes in any one of these systems may effect the others, which could result in consequences detrimental to humans and other living organisms on the Earth.(omitted)
