We introduce a new design technique by treating a two-group zoom lens system with a wide angle of view. First, the concept of the global optimization is introduced in the initial design stage, and from this, the global design technique is completed by analyzing and summarizing large quantities of modern design data. That is, we define the global structure function to achieve a new conceptual design technique for global optimization. And the function is put in a simple form by referring lots of patent data, manipulated with other algebraic equations, and solved finally such that we obtain the global solution region. The global solution region corresponds to the global optimization and suggests insightful systematized directions for the design of two-group zoom lens systems. These directions are attractive compared to global optimization.

The general capacitor placement problem is a combinatorial optimization problem having an objective function composed of power losses and capacitor installation costs subject to bus voltage constraints. In this paper, a global optimization technique, which employing the chaos search algorithm, is applied to solve optimal capacitor placement problem with reducing computational effort and enhancing global optimality of the solution. Chaos method in optimization problem searches the global optimal solution on the regularity of chaotic motions and easily escapes from local or near optimal solution than stochastic optimization algorithms. The chaos optimization method is tested on 9 buses and 69 buses system to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Stereo matching techniques are categorized in two major schemes, local and global matching techniques. In global matching schemes, several investigations are introduced, where cost accumulation is performed in multiple matching lines. In this paper, we introduce a new multi-line stereo matching techniques which expands a conventional single-line matching scheme to multiple one. Matching cost is based on simple normalized cross correlation. We expand the scan-line optimization technique to a multi-line scan-line optimization technique. The proposed technique first generates a reliability image, which is iteratively updated based on the previous reliability measure. After some number of iterations, the reliability image is completed by a hole-filling algorithm. The hole-filling algorithm introduces a disparity score table which records the disparity score of the current pixel. The disparity of an empty pixel is determined by comparing the scores of the neighboring pixels. The proposed technique is tested using the Middlebury and CMU stereo images. The error analysis shows that the proposed matching technique yields better performance than using conventional global matching algorithm.

The propellant grain configuration is a design variable that determines the shape and performance of a solid rocket motor. Grain configuration variables have complicated effects on the motor performance; so the global optimization problem has to be solved in order to design the configuration variables. The grain performance has been analyzed by means of the grain burn-back and internal ballistic analysis, and the optimization technique searches for the configuration variables that satisfy the requirements. The deterministic and stochastic optimization techniques have been applied for the grain optimization, but the results are imperfect. In this study, the optimization design of the configuration variables has been performed using the hybrid optimization technique, which combines those two techniques. As a result, the hybrid optimization technique has proved to be efficient for the grain optimization design.

This paper addresses a novel optimization technique based on molecular dynamics simulation which has been utilized for physical model simulation at various disciplines. In this study, objective functions are considered to be potential functions, which depict molecular interactions. Comparisons of typical optimization method such as the steepest descent and the present method for several test functions are made. The present method shows applicability and stability in finding a global optimum.
A new evolutionary programming technique using multiple subpopulations with completely differnt evolution mechanisms is propsed to solve the optimization problems. Three subpopulations, each has different evolution charcteristics and uses different EP algorithms such as SAEP, AEP and FEP, are cooperating with synergy effect in which it increases the possibility to quickly find the global optimum of continuous optimization problems. Subpopulations evolve in differnt manner and the interaction among these leads to global minimum quickly.
This paper proposes a new stochastic optimization algorithm for hidden Markov models (HMMs) used as a recognizer of automatic lipreading. The proposed method combines a global stochastic optimization method, the simulated annealing technique, and the local optimization method, which produces fast convergence and good solution quality. We mathematically show that the proposed algorithm converges to the global optimum. Experimental results show that training HMMs by the method yields better lipreading performance compared to the conventional training methods based on local optimization.

Shape optimization of internally finned circular tube has been peformed for periodically fully developed turbulent flow and heat transfer. The physical domain considered in this study is very complicated due to periodic boundary conditions both streamwise and circumferential directions. Therefore, Pareto frontier sets of a heat exchanger can be acquired by coupling the CFD and the multi-objective genetic algorithm, which is a global optimization technique. The optimal values of fin widths $(d_1,\;d_2)$ and fin height (H) are numerically obtained by minimizing the pressure loss and maximizing the heat transfer rate within ranges of $d_1=0.2\sim1.5\;mm,\;d_2=0.2\sun1.5\;mm,\;and\;H=0.2\sim1.5\;mm$. The optimal values of the design variables are acquired after the fifth generation and also compared to those of a local optimization algorithm for the same geometry and conditions.
In this paper, we propose two limited memory BFGS algorithms with a nonmonotone line search technique for unconstrained optimization problems. The global convergence of the given methods will be established under suitable conditions. Numerical results show that the presented algorithms are more competitive than the normal BFGS method.
The weighting strategy has received a great attention and has been widely applied to multicriterion optimization. This gaper examines a global criterion method (GCM) with the weighting objectives strategy in fuzzy structural engineering problems. Fuzziness of those problems are in their design goals, constraints and variables. Most of the constraints are originated from analysis of engineering mechanics. The GCM is verified to be equivalent to fuzzy goal programming via a truss design. Continued and mixed discrete variable spaces are presented and examined using a fuzzy global criterion method (FGCM). In the design process a weighting parameter with fuzzy information is introduced into the design and decision making. We use a uniform machine-tool spindle as an illustrative example in continuous design space. Fuzzy multicriterion optimization in mixed design space is illustrated by the design of mechanical spring stacks. Results show that weighting strategy in FGCM can generate both the best compromise solution and a set of Pareto solutions in fuzzy environment. Weighting technique with fuzziness provides a more relaxed design domain, which increases the satisfying degree of a compromise solution or improves the final design.
