  • Ranging from a variety that a consumer to purchase and consume, and a variety with high quality and pest resistance, sustaining biological diversity as well as hiring global experts who understand breeding policy, it tightly maintains relationship with producer, consumer, and exporter to promote superior species for customized export to exporting country. By carrying out researches on cost saving and how to shorten the period of apple to cultivate, it consolidates its stance as a competent apple exporting country of apple and pear with high competetiveness. In order to compete against apple and pear of New Zealand, farmers argue that they need budget and researchers also argue that "No money, no research." Due to certain limit of governmental budget support, it is believed that it is time to fund our own way to promote apple research center. To come up with the best apple production, all of those who associates with apple such as farmers, researchers, government, exporters, and consumer should do their best to enhance the apple and pear industry.

  • Toward more accurate determination of the water cycle in association with climate variability and change as well as baseline data on the impacts of this variability on water resources, the Coordinated Enhanced Observing Period (CEOP) was launched on July 1,2001. The preliminary data period, EOP-1, was implemented from July to September in 2001. The first annual enhanced observing period, EOP-3, is going to start on October 1,2002. CEOP is seeking to achieve a database of common measurements from both in situ and satellite remote sensing, model output, and four-dimensional data analyses (4DDA; including global and regional reanalyses) for a specified period. In this context a number of carefully selected reference stations are linked closely with the existing network of observing sites involved in the GEWEX Continental Scale Experiments, which are distributed across the world. The initial step of CEOP is to develop a pilot global hydro-climatological dataset with global consistency under the climate variability that can be used to help validate satellite hydrology products and evaluate, develop and eventually predict water and energy cycle processes in global and regional models. Based on the dataset, we will address the studies on the inter-comparison and inter-connectivity of the monsoon systems and regional water and energy budget, and a path to down-scaling from the global climate to local water resources, as the second step.

  • High-density temperature and salinity profiles from the successful international Argo project made it possible to reproduce the three-dimensional global ocean state in near-real time, which also increased much attention on the data analysis studies of global ocean. This paper reviewed several important issues on the recent data analysis studies such as systematic biases of XBT (eXpendable BathyThermograph) and Argo data, sea level budget discrepancy between steric height and satellite observed data, heat content change, and the current status of the development of objective analysis fields. This study also emphasized that it is required to carry out very cautious ocean data quality control and understand global-scale ocean variability prior to analyzing the regional-scale ocean climate change, particularly, in the East Asian marginal Seas.

  • Because LRT project is large infrastructure projects investing enormous budget and required continuous maintenance after construction, it is the global trend to perform business in terms of life-cycle from the initial construction, operation to disposal. It is very important LRT to manage interfaces efficiently and to integrate vehicle, civil, track, electricity, communications, signals, operations, facilities organically. Global companies of the railway developed countries including Europe are getting orders a large rail project and preempting the world market based on engineering technology. But, domestic LRT systems engineering is the subcontracting level to the lack of practical skills and experience. Thus, technology securement is very urgent for the independence of systems engineering technology and overseas advance based turnkey. In this paper, we are going to study applicable systems engineering technology focusing on LRT system based on international standard ISO/IEC 15288.

  • The natural carbon cycle has been perturbed since the mid-19th century by anthropogenic CO$_2$emissions from fossil fuel combustion and deforestation due to population growth and industrialization. The current study simulated the global carbon cycle for the past 42 years using an eight-box carbon cycle model. The results showed that since the terrestrial biospheric carbon sink was roughly offset by the deforestation source, the fossil fuel emission source was partitioned between the atmospheric and oceanic sinks. However, the partitioning ratio between the atmosphere and the ocean exhibited a change, that is, the carbon accumulation rate was faster in the atmosphere than in the ocean, due to a decrease in the so-called ocean buffering capacity. It was found that the ocean buffering capacity to take up excess CO$_2$decreased by 50% in terms of the buffer factor over the past 42 years. Accordingly, these results indicate that if the current CO$_2$emission trend continues, the future rate of increase in the atmospheric CO$_2$concentration will accelerate.

  • The micrometeorological tower flux network is the cornerstone of the global terrestrial vegetation monitoring. The eddy covariance technique used for tower fluxes is derived from the conservation of mass and is most applicable for steady-state conditions over flat, extended, and uniform vegetation. This technique allows us to obtain surface fluxes of energy budget components, greenhouse and trace gases, and other pollutants. The quality-controlled flux data are invaluable to validate various models with temporal scales ranging from minutes to years and spatial scales ranging from a few meters to hundreds of kilometers. In this paper, we review the theoretical background of this important eddy covariance technique, examine the measurement criteria and corrections, and finally suggest some measurement strategies that may facilitate coordinated flux measurements among different disciplines and provide a strong infrastructure for the global flux network.

  • Wetlands are a critical component of the global carbon cycle and are essential in mitigating climate change. Accurately quantifying wetland carbon emissions is crucial for understanding and predicting the impact of wetlands on the global carbon budget. The uncertainty quantifying carbon in wetlands may comes from the ecosystem's hydrological, biochemical, and microbiological variability. The Community Land Model is a sophisticated and flexible land surface model that offers several configuration options such as energy and water fluxes, vegetation dynamics, and biogeochemical cycling, necessitating careful consideration for the alternative configurations before model implementation to develop a practical model framework. We conducted a systematic literature review, analyzing the alternatives, focusing on the carbon stock pools configurations and the parameters with significant sensitivity for carbon quantification in wetlands. In addition, we evaluated the feasibility and availability of in situ observation data necessary for validating the different alternatives. This analysis identified the most suitable option for our study site, the Binbong Wetland, in Korea.

  • Many recent studies have concentrated upon the radiative effects of atmospheric aerosols. Though their scattering and absorption of radiation, aerosols can also induce some other important environment effects. In this study, new radiation code and aerosol data within Atmosphere General Circulation Model (AGCM) is used to assess the aerosol radiative forcing and to analyze relative climate effects. The new Kangnung National University AGCM Stratospheric-15 (KNU AGCM ST15) was integrated by using two sets of radiative effect of aerosols: CTRL as not a radiative effect of aerosols and AERO as a radiative effect of aerosols. Two cases show the difference of net shortwave radiation budget at top-of-atmosphere (TOA) is found to be about $-3.4Wm^{-2}$, at the surface (SFC) is about $-5.6Wm^{-2}$. Consequently the mean atmospheric absorption due to aerosol layer in global is about $2.2Wm^{-2}$. This result confirms the existence of a negative forcing due to the direct effect of aerosols at the surface and TOA in global annual mean. In addition, it is found that cooling over at the surface air temperature due to radiative effect of aerosols is about $0.17^{\circ}C$. It is estimated that radiative forcing of the net upward longwave radiation taken as the indirect effect of aerosol is much smaller than that of the direct effect as there is about $0.2Wm^{-2}$ of positive forcing both at TOA and at SFC. From this study, It made an accurate estimation of considering effect of aerosols that is negative effect. This may slow the rate of projected global warming during the $21^{st}$ century.

  • In 2014, Japan is scheduled to launch GCOM(Global Change Observation Mission)-C for the global change observation mission, where SGLI(Second-generation Global Imager) is planned for optical multi-channel observation ofa radiation budget and a carbon cycle. Depending on the spectral channels, SGLI consists ofS GLI-VNR(Visible Near IR) and SGLI-IRS(IR Scanning). Their main design schemes are mostly based upon those ofthe previous instruments ever developed in Japan, which is intended to reduce the development risk for the advanced performance. Accordingly, for the better understanding ofSG LI, the paper reviews the history oft he Japanese optical payloads from two different views: VNR and IR. Through the review, a comparison among the Japanese optical instruments is made to distinguish the development trend toward SGLI ofGC OM-C.
