Offshore platforms in seismically active areas must be designed to survive in the face of intense earthquakes without a global structural collapse. This paper scrutinizes the seismic performance of a newly designed and established jacket type offshore platform situated in the entrance of the Gulf of Suez region based on the API-RP2A normalized response spectra during seismic events. A nonlinear finite element model of a typical jacket type offshore platform is constructed taking into consideration the effect of structure-soil-interaction. Soil properties at the site were manipulated to generate the pile lateral soil properties in the form of load deflection curves, based on API-RP2A recommendations. Dynamic characteristics of the offshore platform, the response function, output power spectral density and transfer functions for different elements of the platform are discussed. The joints deflection and acceleration responses demands are presented. It is generally concluded that consideration of the interaction between structure, piles and soil leads to higher deflections and less stresses in platform elements due to soil elasticity, nonlinearity, and damping and leads to a more realistic platform design. The earthquake-based analysis for offshore platform structure is essential for the safe design and operation of offshore platforms.
In this study, the effect of repeated traffic vibration on the long-term stability of mine openings is analyzed for re-utilization of abandoned mine galleries. The research mine in this study is an underground limestone mine which is developed by room-and-pillar mining method, and a dynamic numerical analysis is performed assuming that the research mine will be utilized as a logistics warehouse. The actual traffic vibration generated by the mining vehicles is measured directly, and its waveform is used as input data for dynamic numerical analysis, As a results of dynamic numerical analysis, after 20,000 repetitions of traffic vibration, the mine openings is analyzed to be stable, but an increase in the maximum principal stress and an additional area of plastic zone are observed in the analysis section. As shown in the changes of displacement, volumetric strain, and maximum principal stress which are measured at the mine opening walls. It is confirmed that if the repeated traffic vibration is continuously applied, the instability of the mine openings can be increased. Authors expect that the results of this study can be used as a reference for basic study on utilization of abandoned mine.

This paper presents a method to analyze the vibration of a flexible spinning disk-spindle system with FDBs, flexible base structure and an actuator in a HDD by using the FEM. Finite element equations of each component of a HDD spindle system from the spinning flexible disk to the flexible base plate are consistently derived by satisfying the geometric compatibility in the internal boundary between each component. A global matrix equation obtained by assembling the finite element equations of each substructure is transformed to a state-space matrix-vector equation, and both damped natural frequencies and modal damping ratios are calculated by using the restarted Arnoldi iteration method. The validity of the proposed method is verified by comparing the simulated natural frequencies, mode shapes with the experimental results.
In this paper, an analytical analysis for the study of vibratory behavior and wave propagation of functionally graded plates (FGM) is presented based on a high order shear deformation theory. The manufacture of these plates' defects can appear in the form of porosity. This latter can question and modify the global behavior of such plates. A new shape of the distribution of porosity according to the thickness of the plate was used. The field of displacement of this theory is present of indeterminate integral variables. The modulus of elasticity and the mass density of these plates are assumed to vary according to the thickness of the plate. Equations of motion are derived by the principle of minimization of energies. Analytical solutions of free vibration and wave propagation are obtained for FGM plates simply supported by integrating the analytic dispersion relation. Illustrative examples are given also to show the effects of variation of various parameters such as(porosity parameter, material graduation, thickness-length ratio, porosity distribution) on vibration and wave propagation of FGM plates.

This study investigates free vibration characteristics of new energy harvesting multi-layer block structures with different geometrical shapes using solid and shell finite elements and evaluate their piezoelectric effect on experiments. The two and three-dimensional finite element (FE) delamination models for block structures described in this paper is attractive not only because it shows excellent accuracy in analysis but also it shows the entire vibration mode shape. The FE model using ABAQUS is used for studying free vibrations of multi-layer block structures for various tip mass and PZT. In particular, new results reported in this paper are focused on the significant effects of the global and local vibration modes for various parameters, such as size of block shape, existence of tip mass and hole, and location of tip mass and PZT. In addition, we evaluate the power generation capacity of developed energy block structures through a laboratory-scale experiment.
Dynamic parameters such as natural frequencies can provide global stiffness information of a structure, and thus be utilized in monitoring structural integrity of large structures such as a containment. To identify the dynamic parameters without interrupting normal operation, a modal analysis method based on ambient vibration measurements should be applied. In this study, dynamic parameters of the containment of Wolsong Unit 2 are identified using ambient vibration measurement data. The feasibility of the study is verified using a numerical model for the containment. From the modal analysis, dynamic parameters of the containment with acceptable correlation to analytical modes can be estimated.
The aim of this paper concerns with the nonlinear analysis of cable-stayed bridges including the vibration effect of cable stays. Two models for the cable stay system are built up in the study. One is the OECS (one element cable system) model in which one single element per cable stay is used and the other is MECS (multi-elements cable system) model, where multi-elements per cable stay are used. A finite element computation procedure has been set up for the nonlinear analysis of such kind of structures. For shape finding of the cable-stayed bridge with MECS model, an efficient computation procedure is presented by using the two-loop iteration method (equilibrium iteration and shape iteration) with help of the catenary function method to discretize each single cable stay. After the convergent initial shape of the bridge is found, further analysis can then be performed. The structural behaviors of cable-stayed bridges influenced by the cable lateral motion will be examined here detailedly, such as the static deflection, the natural frequencies and modes, and the dynamic responses induced by seismic loading. The results show that the MECS model offers the real shape of cable stays in the initial shape, and all the natural frequencies and modes of the bridge including global modes and local modes. The global mode of the bridge consists of coupled girder, tower and cable stays motion and is a coupled mode, while the local mode exhibits only the motion of cable stays and is uncoupled with girder and tower. The OECS model can only offers global mode of tower and girder without any motion of cable stays, because each cable stay is represented by a single straight cable (or truss) element. In the nonlinear seismic analysis, only the MECS model can offer the lateral displacement response of cable stays and the axial force variation in cable stays. The responses of towers and girders of the bridge determined by both OECS- and MECS-models have no great difference.
One-dimensional rod theory is very effective as a simplified analytical approach to large scale or complicated structures such as high-rise buildings, in preliminary design stages. It replaces an original structure by a one-dimensional rod which has an equivalent stiffness in terms of global properties. The mechanical behavior of structures composed of distinct constituents of different stiffness such as coupled walls with opening is significantly governed by the local variation of stiffness. Furthermore, in structures with setback the distribution of the longitudinal stress behaves remarkable nonlinear behavior in the transverse-wise. So, the author proposed the two-dimensional rod theory as an extended version of the rod theory which accounts for the two-dimensional local variation of structural stiffness; viz, variation in the transverse direction as well as longitudinal stiffness distribution. This paper proposes how to deal with the two-dimensional rod theory for structures with setback. Validity of the proposed theory is confirmed by comparison with numerical results of computational tools in the cases of static, free vibration and forced vibration problems for various structures. The transverse-wise nonlinear distribution of the longitudinal stress due to the existence of setback is clarified to originate from the long distance from setback.

In this paper, the dynamics of a 2-DOF not 1:1 resonant Hamiltonian system are studied. In the first part of the work, the behaviors of special periodic orbits called normal modes are examined by means of the harmonic balance method and their approximate stability ar analyzed by using the Synge's concept named stability in the kinematico-statical sense. Secondly, the global dynamics of the system for low and high energy are studied in terms of a perturbation analysis and Poincare' maps. In this part, one can see that the unstable normal mode generates chaotic motions resulting from the transverse intersections of the stable and unstable manifolds. Although there exist analytic methods for proving the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits, chaos, they cannot be applied in our case and thus, the Poincare' maps constructed by direct numerical integrations are utilized fot detecting chaotic motions. In the last part of the work, the existence of arbitrarily many periodic orbits of the system are proved by using a subharmonic Melnikov's method. We also study the possibility of the breakdown of invariant KAM tori only when h>h$_{0}$ (h$_{0}$:bifurcating energy) and investigate the generality of the destruction phenomena of the rational tori in the systems perturbed by stiffness and inertial coupling.

This paper presents a finite element method to analyze the free and forced vibration of a hard disk drive (HDD) considering the flexibility of a spinning disk-spindle with fluid dynamic bearings (FDBs), an actuator with pivot bearings, an air bearing between head-disk interface and the base with complicated geometry. Finite element equation of each component is consistently derived with the satisfaction of the geometric compatibility of the internal boundary between each component. The spinning disk, hub and FDBs are modeled by annular sector elements, beam elements and stiffness and damping elements, respectively. The actuator am, E-block, suspension and base plate are modeled by tetrahedral elements. The pivot bearing in the actuator and the air bearing between head-disk interfaces are modeled by the stiffness element with five degrees of freedom and the axial stiffness, respectively. A global matrix equation obtained by assembling the finite element equations of each substructure is transformed to a state-space matrix-vector equation, and both damped natural frequencies and modal damping ratios are calculated by solving the associated eigenvalue problem with the restarted Arnoldi iteration method. Modal and shock testing are performed to show that the proposed method well predicts the vibration characteristics of a HDD.
