This paper focuses on examining environmental implications embedded in recent spatial expansion of the Asian megacities as well as exploring the potentials of planning practices in addressing urban environmental problems. Regardless what underlying forces of recent metropolitan expansion are, nearly all the Asian megacities suffer serious environmental problems as these cities rapidly grow in terms of population and geographical boundaries. Furthermore, the global environmental implication of urban expansion at Asian megacities implies that there must be intense endeavor to develop more innovative policy solution in order to tackle down the worsening urban environmental problems in Asian cities at a metropolitan scale. Given the situation that there has been little attention on environmental consequence of the Asian metropolitan expansion in spatial term, this paper presents the overview on the changing nature of urban environmental problems embedded in the spatial expansion of recent metropolitan area in Asia, along with exploring possible solutions from planning practices guiding sustainable urban development in Asia.

A multiscale method is presented for analysis of thin slab structures in which the microstructures can not be reduced to two-dimensional plane stress models and thus three dimensional treatment of microstructures is necessary. This method is based on the classical asymptotic expansion multiscale approach but with consideration of the special geometric characteristics of the slab structures. This is achieved via a special form of multiscale asymptotic expansion of displacement field. The expanded three dimensional displacement field only exhibits in-plane periodicity and the thickness dimension is in the global scale. Consequently by employing the multiscale asymptotic expansion approach the global macroscopic structural problem and the local microscopic unit cell problem are rationally set up. It is noted that the unit cell is subjected to the in-plane periodic boundary conditions as well as the traction free conditions on the out of plane surfaces of the unit cell. The variational formulation and finite element implementation of the unit cell problem are discussed in details. Thereafter the in-plane material response is systematically characterized via homogenization analysis of the proposed special unit cell problem for different microstructures and the reasoning of the present method is justified. Moreover the present multiscale analysis procedure is illustrated through a plane stress beam example.

Unconventional natural gas resources are now estimated to be as large as conventional resources. Unconventional natural gas has became an increasingly important source of energy in the world since the start of this century. The factors that drive natural gas demand and supply point more and more to a future in which natural gas plays greater role in the global energy mix. The expansion of using natural gas will be expected in Korea. This research aims to analyze environmental impacts of expansion of unconventional natural gas. This research was carried out for comparative analysis between global energy mix and Korea energy mix, and developed a case that reflect the changed energy mix due to the expansion of unconventional natural gas in Korea. Also this research evaluate the production of air pollutants and the cost of the damage in power generation sector. The results of this research can be summarized as that natural gas portion of future global energy mix (about 25%) is greater than Korea energy mix (about 12%). This research developed a case that replace 10% energy of power generation sector to natural gas in the 6th demand supply program, reflecting the changed energy mix due to the expansion of natural gas use. In that case, air pollutants would be reduced gradually through 2015 to 2027. In detail, carbon dioxide reduces 22 million tons and environmental damage cost reduces 4500 billion won by 2027.

Purpose: This case study illustrates the successful entry of Saudi Aramco in the Korean market and how it grows to become one of the world's largest integrated energy enterprises. Research design, data and methodology: This case investigates diverse secondary sources to examine the entry strategy of Aramco in Korea, such as several interviews including public and anonymous dialogues, periodicals, dispatches (i.e. news articles and magazines), annual reports, industrial reports, and others. Results: The main concern for the international strategic approaching of Saudi Aramco is to enter into Korean market by joint venture with SsangYong Oil (today's S-Oil Corporation) in 1991 and finally, ending by Acquisition of S-Oil in 2015. This acquisition of local No.3 company, S-Oil, in Korea is the successful case in Asian Markets overcoming liability of foreignness. Moreover, Saudi Aramco's global distribution strategy through localization in the Korean market is appropriate given the market conditions, timing, effectiveness, and efficiency by sharing their resources and collaborating. Conclusions: It would be valuable, unique, and real story to analyze global leading company's entry and globalization strategy in overseas market. In addition, this study provides decision-makers with a significant and more strategic implication for the overseas expansion of businesses.

Global economy these days is characterized with an unlimited competition due to Globalization and Information Age. Expansion of E-business accelerates informationized and globalized society and also intensifies market competition. As a result, global economy gradually develops to knowledge-based economy, and Business Service Industry becomes essential to the production increase in the manufacturing industry as well as its high added value comes into the spotlight as one of rapidly growing business industry. Business Service Industry has not yet been academically established, however, it may be defined as the industry of which production is a mediating service in the production process rather than in the final consumption. The export of the manufacturing industry has traditionally played mainstream role in Korea where economic development has been centered on the manufacturing export. However, as with increasing emphasis on the role of service sector and highly developed industrial field in the national economy, not only the relationships between manufacturing industry and service industry becomes rapidly more involved, but also the importance of highly competitive service industry becomes emphasized in accordance with open global economy after WTO system takes off. Now it is time we come to the realization that service is in the center of national competitive power as a result of global door open in all service industry.

Urban space expansion is an important symbol of the urbanization process and has always been an important topic in urban studies. In addition, for sustainable city management, it is important to identify factors that can influence, such as the driving force and direction of urban space expansion, from the stage of establishing an urban development plan. To understand these factors, by observing the expansion process of a specific city, it is possible to sufficiently observe how the urban spatial dimension changes. Through a series of processes, the spatial growth characteristics of the city are analyzed, and the influence and results of important factors are analyzed. For this purpose, this paper examines the changes in the city's outer boundary and land use structure through monitoring data on urban areas of 14 cities in Hunan Province, China from 2000 to 2016. Temporal and spatial regularity according to the urban space expansion of these cities were analyzed, and a preliminary assessment was made on whether the urban space expansion is coordinated with the urban population growth. The assessment result showed: (1) The urban space of most cities has been extended rapidly in 2000-2015 however, the rate and the intensity of urban space expanding has been declining. (2) The construction of the industrial park is the core driving force of the urban space expanding, and the change of the urban space structure is manifested as enclave city expansion because that the industrial park is usually far away from the city center. (3) The population agglomeration is another driving force of the urban space expanding. At this time, the urban space expanding is like boundary extension. (4) Except Changsha city, all of the cities has a high urbanization-area-growth elastic coefficient. It means that most of the cities should enhance the land use degree.

This research was carried out by setting hypotheses on recognition of the global image of the research subject, a domestic cosmetic brand and consequent quality of the brand, reputation of the brand, purchasing decision, influence of images of expanded countries and their correlations to investigate what effect the global images of local brands practically have on domestic consumers' purchasing decision. The analysis results show that overseas expansion of the research subject brand has positive influence on the brand possessing global images. However, it can be seen that the quality of the brand has much larger influence on the reputation of the brand than the images of global brand. In addition, the images of the expanded countries have influence on purchasing decisions but the global images based on the expanded countries did not have much influence on purchasing decisions. Therefore, it can be seen that global images based on high levels of brand reputation and quality are requirements of a most competitive brand than images of the expanded countries in forecasting likelihood of purchase.

The paper is oriented towards a reflection on the epistemological extension of world history. This discipline is currently opening up for new subjects and new foci of interest, with environmental history being one of them. The paper debates the interaction between the global and the local as one of the main issues of world history. It analyses the impacts of the interconnectivity of diverse regions as well as different geographical and cultural complexes, during the period between 1500 and 1800. Assuming that the sea in its economic, cultural and environmental dimensions contributed actively to world history, and is, in itself, a major factor of globalization, the paper intends to highlight interdependencies which fostered connections between the local and the global. It further submits to discussion which was the impact of an on-going globalization process, based on maritime dynamics, on the environment. Through an analysis centered on the impact of European overseas expansion, some environmental impacts will be analyzed. The paper aims at questioning environmental history as an emergent theme of world history, based on the historical experience of connecting worlds developed in the First Global Age (1500-1800).
