  • We explore the impact of Chinese future air pollutant emissions on ozone air quality in Northeast Asia (NEA) and health in South-Korea using an assessment framework including ICAMS (The Integrated Climate and Air Quality Modeling System) and BenMAP (The Environmental Benefits Mapping and Analysis Program). The emissions data sets from the climate change scenarios, the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) (emission scenarios, EMSO), are used to simulate ozone air quality in NEA in the current (1996~2005, 2000s), the near future (2016~2025, 2020s) and the distant future (2046~2055, 2050s). Furthermore, the simulated ozone changes in the 2050s are used to analyze ozone-related premature mortality and economic cost in South-Korea. While different EMSOs are applied to the China region, fixed EMSO are used for other country regions to isolate the impacts of the Chinese emissions. Predicted ozone changes in NEA are distinctively affected by large changes in NOx emission over most of China region. Comparing the 2020s with the 2000s situation, the largest increase in mean ozone concentrations in NEA is simulated under RCP 8.5 and similarly small increases are under other RCPs. In the 2050s in NEA, the largest increase in mean ozone concentrations is simulated under RCP 6.0 and leads to the occurrence of the highest premature mortalities and economic costs in South-Korea. Whereas, the largest decrease is simulated under RCP 4.5 leads to the highest avoided premature mortality numbers and economic costs. Our results suggest that continuous reduction of NOx emissions across the China region under an assertive climate change mitigation scenario like RCP 4.5 leads to improved future ozone air quality and health benefits in the NEA countries including South-Korea.

  • Klebsiella oxytoca CCUG 15788 is resistant to $Ni^{2+}$ at a concentration of 10 mM and grows in an inducible manner when exposed to lower concentrations of $Ni^{2+}$. The complete genomic sequence of a 4.2-kb HindIII-digested fragment of this strain was determined from genomic DNA. It was shown to contain four nickel resistance genes (nirA, nirB, nirC, and nirD) encoding transporter and transmembrane proteins for nickel resistance. When the plasmid pKOHI4, encoding nirABCD, was transformed into Escherichia coli JM109, the cells were able to grow in Tris-buffered mineral medium containing 3 mM nickel. TnphoA'-1 insertion mutants in the four nickel genes nirA, nirB, nirC, and nirD showed nickel sensitivity. The nir genes were heterogeneously expressed in E. coli, suggesting functional roles of these genes in nickel resistance.

  • CTD data taken in the Ulleung Basin between 1996 and 2001 are analyzed to understand the hydrography around Dokdo. Major features occurring in the Ulleung Basin such as the path variability of the East Korean Warm Current (EKWC), the location and size of the Ulleung Warm Eddy (UWE) and the position of the Offshore Branch along the Japanese coast all influence the hydrography around Dokdo. The Dokdo area frequently lies in the eastern part of the meandering EKWC and the UWE that results in a filting of isolines sloping upwards to Dokdo in the Ulleung Interplain Gap (UIG) between Ulleungdo and Dokdo. Subsurface water near Dokdo then becomes colder and less saline than water near Ulleungdo. Two cases that are opposite to this general trend are also identified when the Dokdo area is directly affected by the EKWC and by a small scale eddy ffd by the Offshore Branch. High salinity cores and warm waters are then found near Dokdo with isolines sloping upwards to Ulleungdo. Freshening of the East Sea Intermediate Water was observed in the UIG when neither the EKWC nor the UWE was developed in the Ulleung Basin during June-November 2000.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop snow and sea ice detection algorithm in Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) meteorological data processing system. Since COMS has only five channels, it is not affordable to use microwave or shortwave infrared data which are effective and generally used for snow detection. In order to estimate snow and sea ice coverage, combinations between available channel data(mostly visible and 3.7 ${\mu}m$) are applied to the algorithm based on threshold method. As a result, the COMS snow and sea ice detection algorithm shows reliable performance compared to MODIS products with channel limitation. Specifically, there is partial underestimation over the complicated vegetation area and overestimation over the area of high level clouds such as cirrus. Some corrections are performed by using water vapor and infrared channels to remove cloud contamination and by applying NDVI to detect more snow pixels for the underestimated area.

  • Satellite observed brightness temperature simulation using a radiative transfer model (here after, RTM) is useful for various fields, for example sensor design and channel selection by using theoretically calculated radiance data, development of satellite data processing algorithm and algorithm parameter determination before launch. This study is focused on elaborating the simulation procedure, and analyzing of difference between observed and modelled clear sky brightness temperatures. For the CMDPS (COMS Meteorological Data Processing System) development, the simulated clear sky brightness temperatures are used to determine whether the corresponding pixels are cloud-contaminated in cloud mask algorithm as a reference data. Also it provides important information for calibrating satellite observed radiances. Meanwhile, simulated brightness temperatures of COMS channels plan to be used for assessing the CMDPS performance test. For these applications, the RTM requires fast calculation and high accuracy. The simulated clear sky brightness temperatures are compared with those of MTSAT-1R observation to assess the model performance and the quality of the observation. The results show that there is good agreement in the ocean mostly, while in the land disagreement is partially found due to surface characteristics such as land surface temperature, surface vegetation, terrain effect, and so on.

  • Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has operationally produced Atmospheric Motion Vector (AMV) from the consecutive MTSAT-1R satellite image dataset. Comparing with radiosonde data, our current AMV scheme shows more than 10 m/s RMSE. Therefore we need to improve continuously its accuracy. Many AMV producers have stated that the bad performance of the Height Assignment (HA) algorithm is the main reason of degrading the accuracy of AMV. The uncertainties in AMV HA can occur in the algorithm itself, used NWP profiles, and the performance of Radiative Transfer Model (RTM) etc. This study introduces currently operated AMV HA schemes and the impacts of NWP profile data and RTM that these schemes use were investigated. Finally we analyzed the relationship between vectors by vector tracking and heights assigned to each vector by using collocated wind profile dataset with radiosonde data. This study is a preliminary work to improve the accuracy of AMV by removing or decreasing the uncertainties in AMV estimation.

  • Most scheduling problems including DAG(Directed Acyclic Graph)-based are known to be NP-complete, so many heuristic-based scheduling algorithms have been researched. HEFT and CPOP are such algorithms which have been devised to be effective in heterogeneous environment. We proposed, in the previous research, three scheduling algorithms which are effective in realistic global heterogeneous environment: CPOC, eCPOPC and eCPOP. In this paper, the heuristics which are used in the above five algorithms will be systematically analyzed. Those algorithms will be also studied experimentally using various benchmarks. Experimental results show that the eCPOC generates better schedules than any other algorithms and the heuristics which are used in the proposed algorithms are effective in the global heterogeneous environment.

  • This study, through the survey of citizens of Daegu in regard to the environment education experience and citizens perception, seeks to identify the order of importance and perception on the severity of environment. The survey has found that 36.4% citizens of Daegu have environment education experience. Those who have experience have high standard of living, live in high population density area and where pollutant generating plants are prevalent. In addition they are likely to live in apartment, are younger, and the higher the education level, more opportunities they have in getting environment education. The study has found that the environment education experience gives noticeable influence on environment perception, environment attitude, and environment activities. Also, those who have the environment education are likely to be interested in environment, know green growth policies, and are positive about local environment activities. Thus, they are willing to participate in activities to improve local environment and have emphasized the need for more environment education. As for what environment elements are most severe, they pointed to the "global warming and climate change" and "everyday garbage" and as for what are important, they chose "drinking water quality" and "global warming and climate change." Based on the study, we came to the conclusion that more environment education should be provided to elevate the interest in environment and subsequently, foster the sense of responsibility and civic mind toward the preservation of environment. In light of above, local governments must expand their supports and fully utilize the Local Agenda 21 to promote the education and increase the perception of citizens on the environment.

  • This study compares the summer monsoon circulations during a heavy rainfall period over the Korean peninsular from 11 to 18 July 2004, simulated by three widely used regional models; WRF, MM5, and RSM. An identical model setup is carried out for all the experiments, except for the physical option differences in the RSM. The three models with a nominal resolution of about 50 km over Korea are nested by NCEP-DOE reanalysis data. Another RSM experiment with the same cumulus parameterization scheme as in the WRF and MM5 is designed to investigate the importance of the representation of subgrid-scale parameterized convection in reproducing monsoonal circulations in East Asia. All thee models are found to be capable of reproducing the general distribution of monsoonal precipitation, extending northeastward from south China across the Korean peninsula, to northern Japan. The results from the WRF and MM5 are similar in terms of accumulated precipitation, but a slightly better performance in the WRF than in the MM5. The RSM improves the bias for precipitation as compared to those from the WRF and MM5, but the pattern correlation is degraded due to overestimation of precipitation in northern China. In the comparison of simulated synoptic scale features, the RSM is found to reproduce the large-scale features well compared to the results from the MM5 and WRF. On the other hand, the simulated precipitation from the RSM with the convection scheme used in the MM5 and WRF is closer to that from the WRF and MM5 simulations, indicating the significant dependency of simulated precipitation in East Asia on the cumulus parameterization scheme.

  • A rapid, inexpensive enzymatic method is proposed for indirect water quality testing in terms of heavy metal toxicity. The activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase was applied for heavy metal toxicity test as an effective criterion in water quality. The toxicity of Pb (lead) and Cd (cadmium) for water flea, Moina macrocopa, were evaluated for $2{\sim}8\;days$ with variables of mobilization ability. And the reproduction impairment of Moina macrocopa were investigated as the parameter of chronic toxicity twst for Pb and Cd. As a result, the $EC_{50}$ for immobilization of Moina macrocopa were Pb and Cd were 1.6749 and 0.4683, respectively. The values of reproducive impairment to Moina macrocopa for Pb and Cd were 9.5938 and 8.3264 in $EC_{50}$. A significant alteration of G6PDH (Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) activity of Moina macrocopa was observed when Cd and Pb were treated in media. The results obtained indicate that G6PDH activity of Moina macrocopa can be used as an indicative parameter in aquatic toxicity tests for heavy metals.
