  • We examine the awareness of the facility managers in Korean universities and colleges over the global climate change and over the national greenhouse gas (GHG) energy target management program via a questionnaire survey. The result shows that the survey participants maintain high awareness on global and national issues including the climate change and the concept of the national GHG management framework. On the other hand, the responsibility of universities and colleges associated to these issues is not recognized as well, showing the necessity for further education. Additionally, important implications on the direction and the major factors that should be considered during the development of a GHG management program for universities and colleges are deduced from the result of the survey. In order to be effective in universities and colleges, a GHG management program must be able to estimate the present level of emissions accurately, to address campus-specific emissions characteristics, and to facilitate ease use for generic users. At the same time, active supporting services including education and promotion should be incorporated. The survey result can be utilized as basic data in guiding the future development of effective GHG management programs.

  • Recently, studies about bilingual word embedding have been gaining much attention. However, bilingual word embedding with Korean is not actively pursued due to the difficulty in obtaining a sizable, high quality corpus. Local embeddings that can be applied to specific domains are relatively rare. Additionally, multi-word vocabulary is problematic due to the lack of one-to-one word-level correspondence in translation pairs. In this paper, we crawl 868,163 paragraphs from a Korean-English law corpus and propose three mapping strategies for word embedding. These strategies address the aforementioned issues including multi-word translation and improve translation pair quality on paragraph-aligned data. We demonstrate a twofold increase in translation pair quality compared to the global bilingual word embedding baseline.

  • Vehicle black boxes that have similar functions as airplane black boxes are currently being used due to the loss of many lives and properties arising from vehicle accidents. Both black-box products and Event Data Recorder(EDR) systems are currently available in the market. Most of the existing in-vehicle black boxes, however, record only external videos and images and cannot show the vehicle's driving status, whereas EDR products record only the driving status and not external videos. To address the problem of black boxes that can record only videos and images and that of EDR systems that can record only driving data, an integrated vehicle state and video recording system that uses MOST(Media-oriented System Transport) and OBD-II(Onboard Diagnostics II) and CAM (camera) and GPS (global positioning system).

  • Protein homology detection is an important issue in comparative genomics. Because of the exponential growth of sequence databases, fast and efficient homology detection tools are urgently needed. Currently, for homology detection, sequence comparison methods using local alignment such as BLAST are generally used as they give a reasonable measure for sequence similarity. However, these methods have drawbacks in offering overall sequence similarity, especially in dealing with eukaryotic genomes that often contain many insertions and duplications on sequences. Also these methods do not provide the explicit models for speciation, thus it is difficult to interpret their similarity measure into homology detection. Here, we present a novel method based on Word Conservation Score (WCS) to address the current limitations of homology detection. Instead of counting each amino acid, we adopted the concept of 'Word' to compare sequences. WCS measures overall sequence similarity by comparing word contents, which is much faster than BLAST comparisons. Furthermore, evolutionary distance between homologous sequences could be measured by WCS. Therefore, we expect that sequence comparison with WCS is useful for the multiple-species-comparisons of large genomes. In the performance comparisons on protein structural classifications, our method showed a considerable improvement over BLAST. Our method found bigger micro-syntenic blocks which consist of orthologs with conserved gene order. By testing on various datasets, we showed that WCS gives faster and better overall similarity measure compared to BLAST.

  • Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC) developed global and platform-independent data standards to improve ineffective processes of clinical trial studies. Regardless of its objective toward global cooperation, the current version of the CDISC standard cannot describe clinical trial data in various languages for multi-national investigators or reviewers. This problem applies not only to tabulated datasets in Study Data Tabulation Model (SDTM) but also to extensible markup language representation of the datasets in Operational Data Model (ODM) instances. In order to address this issue, we propose to extend the current version of SDTM and ODM to collect clinical data for multi-national clinical trials. SDTM needs to have new special-purpose domain for multi-language representation purpose. Additionally, ODM is recommended to extend its XML schema using subtyping or type inheritance mechanism respectively. Our extension of SDTM and ODM enable to represent any granule of study data tabulation model or XML data entities to describe in efficient languages. This result will contribute to collect multi-language data easily for multi-national clinical trials.

  • Cancer show distinct pattern of gene expression when it is compared to normal. This difference results malignant characteristic of cancer. Many cancer drugs are targeting this difference so that it can selectively kill cancer cells. One of the recent demand for personalized treating cancer is retrieving normal tissue from a patient so that the gene expression difference between cancer and normal be assessed. However, in most clinical situation it is hard to retrieve normal tissue from a patient. This is because biopsy of normal tissues may cause damage to the organ function or a risk of infection or side effect what a patient to take. Thus, there is a challenge to estimate normal cell's gene expression where cancers are originated from without taking additional biopsy. In this paper, we propose in-silico based prediction of normal cell's gene expression from gene expression data of a tumor sample. We call this challenge as reverting the cancer into normal. We divided this challenge into two parts. The first part is making a generator that is able to fool a pretrained discriminator. Pretrained discriminator is from the training of public data (9,601 cancers, 7,240 normals) which shows 0.997 of accuracy to discriminate if a given gene expression pattern is cancer or normal. Deceiving this pretrained discriminator means our method is capable of generating very normal-like gene expression data. The second part of the challenge is to address whether generated normal is similar to true reverse form of the input cancer data. We used, cycle-consistent adversarial networks to approach our challenges, since this network is capable of translating one domain to the other while maintaining original domain's feature and at the same time adding the new domain's feature. We evaluated that, if we put cancer data into a cycle-consistent adversarial network, it could retain most of the information from the input (cancer) and at the same time change the data into normal. We also evaluated if this generated gene expression of normal tissue would be the biological reverse form of the gene expression of cancer used as an input.

  • Environmental issues are among the most critical issues nowadays. These issues are no longer confined to individual countries, and international society has been progressing in building global dialogues since the early 1970s. Within these international efforts, Germany and Japan have played essential roles in global environmental governance. However, there are major differences in nation-level environmental policies in both countries. Governance based on network structure is more efficient than that based on hierarchy for solving complex problems. The network structure is formed through horizontal cooperation among various autonomous actors, and the relationship intensity among actors is one of the key concepts in the governance. Using social network analysis as a framework to explain complicated societal structures explains how interaction among actors creates networks, and these networks further affect their interactions. The purpose of this study is to investigate the structure of environmental policy governance as collaborative governance in Germany and Japan. To address this goal, this paper analyzes the relationship between the informational dimension of governance networks and its complement resource-sharing networks in both countries. The results show that the information-sharing networks have lower-level network influence on the resource-sharing networks as higher-level networks even if not all of the information factors have singular influences. The results suggest that the information-sharing networks may be one of the pieces of the puzzle for explaining this phenomenon in environmental governance in Germany and Japan.

  • The phenomenon of abnormal climate conditions resulting from greenhouse gas-induced global warming is increasingly prevalent. To address this challenge, global initiatives are underway to adopt environmentally friendly, zero-emission fuels. In this study, we investigate the hydrogen embrittlement characteristics of materials used for eco-friendly hydrogen storage systems. The effects of hydrogen embrittlement on austenitic stainless steels of the FCC series and structural steel of the BCC series were examined. Initially, test samples of three different steel types were prepared in 2t and 3t sizes, and hydrogen was injected into the specimens using an electrochemical method over a 24-hour period. Subsequently, a universal material testing machine (UTM) was employed to monitor changes in mechanical strength and elongation. The FCC series stainless steels exhibited a tendency for elongation to decrease, indicating low sensitivity to hydrogen. In contrast, the mechanical strength and elongation of the BCC series steel changed significantly upon hydrogen charging, posing challenges for prediction. The results of the present study are expected to serve as a fundamental database for analyzing the impact of hydrogen embrittlement on both FCC and BCC series steel materials.

  • Generally, Global Climate Models (GCM) cannot be used directly due to their inherent error arising from over or under-estimation of climate variables compared to the observed data. Several bias correction methods have been devised to solve this problem. Most of the traditional bias correction methods are one dimensional as they bias correct the climate variables separately. One such method is the Quantile Mapping method which builds a transfer function based on the statistical differences between the GCM and observed variables. Laux et al. introduced a copula-based method that bias corrects simulated climate data by employing not one but two different climate variables simultaneously and essentially extends the traditional one dimensional method into two dimensions. but it has some limitations. This study uses objective functions to address specifically, the limitations of Laux's methods on the Quantile Mapping method. The objective functions used were the observed rank correlation function, the observed moment function and the observed likelihood function. To illustrate the performance of this method, it is applied to ten GCMs for 20 stations in South Korea. The marginal distributions used were the Weibull, Gamma, Lognormal, Logistic and the Gumbel distributions. The tested copula family include most Archimedean copula families. Five performance metrics are used to evaluate the efficiency of this method, the Mean Square Error, Root Mean Square Error, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Percent Bias, Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency and the Kullback Leibler Divergence. The results showed a significant improvement of Laux's method especially when maximizing the observed rank correlation function and when maximizing a combination of the observed rank correlation and observed moments functions for all GCMs in the validation period.
