The characterization of chemical properties and analogy of mallufactured origin for the nine potsherds and eleven celadon sherds collected in Wonnae-dong, Daejeon and Yucheon-ri, Buan, respectively were performed by analyzing their body and glaze compositions and compared with previous data reported. The chemical compositions of the body and glaze were determined by XRF and EPMA, respectively. The trace elements of the body were analyzed by ICP-MS. The Seger analysis and principal components analysis were used to compare the major compositions of body and glaze of the potteries we found with previous data. Wonnae-dong's Whiteware (C-1) showed considerably high $SiO_2$ concentration differently from the other potteries. Wonnae-dong's Whiteware (C-2) showed similar characteristics with potteries of Seoul-Kyeongi and Daejeon-Chungnam provinces in chemical compositions of the body and the glaze. Wonnae-dong's celadons (B-1 and B-2) were classified as the group of Daejeon, Chungman provincial potteries in chemical compositions of the body. It was difficult to distinguish the characteristic differences in the Buncheong data between the provinces with the Seger formula analysis and the PCA. Celadon from Yucheon-ri site showed the same characteristics with previous data reported. The results above demonstrated that it is reasonable to study the characterization of potteries and analogy of manufactured origin with a comparison for the chemical compositions of the body and the glaze of the potteries by using the Seger formula analysis and the PCA.
This study examines the results of analyses of the lead isotope ratio and chemical composition of lead glass and green glaze from ancient Northeast Asia in order to suggest their production sites and reveal further characteristics. The comparison of the lead isotope ratio of lead glass and green glaze from two Baekje remains in Iksan-the Wanggung-ri Site and Mireuksa Temple Site-suggests that they were produced to the west of the South Gyeonggi Massif (Zone 4) using lead extracted from the same area. With a few exceptions, it has proved difficult to identify the production sites of most of the green-glazed roof tiles from Unified Silla-period Buddhist temples across Northeast Asia. The major component of the lead glass from Baekje, Silla, China, and Japan during the seventh century is PbO, SiO2, Al2O3, CuO, and Fe2O3, with a ratio of PbO and SiO2 of 70 and 30 wt.%, respectively. The green-glazed roof tiles excavated from a temple from the Unified Silla period have a high proportion of lead, ranging from 64 to 90 wt.%. Green-glazed lozenge tiles excavated from the Sacheonwangsa Temple site in Gyeongju were shown to contain PbO, SiO2, Al2O3, and CuO, a similar composition with lead glass. An experiment was conducted to reproduce a glaze according to the production method mentioned in the Zō hotokesho sakumotsu-chō (Buddhist statue workshop crop book) in the Shosoin Repository. In this experiment, an identical ratio of PbO was observed for Japanese green-glazed ceramics from the eighth to eleventh century as that found in Chinese lead-glazed ceramics excavated from kilns operated from the seventh to tenth century in Henan. This indicates that production methods for lead glass and glaze were shared across Northeast Asia.
Selecting appropriate materials can be significantly important to make different image in the product and also give distinguished express to the users. A material for the ceramic product surface consists of the combination between a glaze and a body, and each attribution of materials and the way of the combination creates different texture and color. This study analyzes the difference between visually and tactually sensibility of ceramic surface to through the simulating both visual and tactual stimulation by verbal evaluation method. Totally 13 adjectives are selected from homepage of local and global ceramic product brand. And totally 12 ceramic samples are created with the consideration of color, glossiness and roughness. These 12 samples are the combination between four ceramic bodies (White porcelain, Celadon_c, Sancheong and Black soil) and three glazes (Transparent, Celadon_g, Black glaze). The respondents of first survey were asked to rub, touch and hold before evaluating the sensibility of ceramic surface and other respondents of second survey were asked to evaluate visual images of 9 samples which showed meaningfully difference from first survey. The surface which scored the highest sensibility with the first survey was 'pure' on a surface of White porcelain body with Transparent glaze, and the lowest was also 'pure' on a surface of Black soil body with Transparent glaze. The highest score in the second survey was the same result as the first survey, but the lowest scored 'casual' and the surface was Black soil body with Celadon glaze. By the comparison with two survey results, not every sensibility is same result shown as the first survey and the second survey, but the tactile sensibilities such as 'artistic', 'luxurious', 'sensuous', 'romantic' and 'mysterious' can be experienced by via visual materials of ceramic surfaces.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the material characteristics of black wares excavated from Yongyeon-ri, Damyang and to clarify the correlation of the factors that develop black coulor compared with black wares excavated from other regions. As a results of absorption rate, colour coordinate, compositional mineral, section analysis and contents showed high correlation between the kilns and the waste dumplings, indicating that they were made using the same materials. Second, comparing the microtextures and contents of the glaze layer with the excavated sherds from other kilns, a characteristic coagulation phenomena of iron oxides were not observed in Yongyeon-ri and Gilmyeong-ri, and it was considered that the material, mixing ratio, and firing environment were different from those of Bonggok-dong. In addition, statistical analysis using the major components revealed that the bodies of Yongyeon-ri were highly correlated with those of Bonggok-dong, which is nearest to the region, and similar to Gilmyeong-ri in the glaze layer. The characteristics of colorant were different depending on Fe2O3 content and K2O content also contributed to the classification of the composition of each excavated kiln. Conclusionally, it can be seen from the scientific analysis that the colour of black wares excluded from different regions is materially different from that of iron oxide, the coloring condition, and the firing environment.

PURPOSE. Polymer infiltrated ceramic network (PICN) materials, also called hybrid ceramics, are new materials in dental market. The manufacturer of the PICN material VITA Enamic suggests 3 different finishing procedures for this new material. In the present study, surface roughness and color differences caused from different finishing procedures of VITA Enamic were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 120 specimens were prepared in dimensions $2{\times}10{\times}12mm$ from VITA Enamic hybrid ceramic blocks with 'high translucency' and 'translucency 2M2' shades. The specimens were divided into 8 groups. For each group, different finishing procedures suggested by the manufacturer were performed. Surface roughness values were determined by a tactile portable profilometer. Color changes were evaluated using a clinical spectrophotometer. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc comparison. The significance level was set at ${\alpha}=0.05$. RESULTS. The roughest surfaces were observed in Glaze Groups. Their surface roughness values were similar to that of the control group. Clinical Kit and Technical Kit groups did not show a statistically significant difference regarding surface roughness (P>.05). The largest color difference regarding ${\Delta}E_{00}$ was observed in Clinical Kit finishing groups. There were also statistically significant color changes between the groups (P<.05). However, all the groups showed clinically acceptable color change (${\Delta}E_{00}$<2.25) except Clinical Kit Groups (${\Delta}E_{00}$>2.25). CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of the present study, it may be suggested that finishing the VITA Enamic restorations by Technical Kit instead of Glaze and Clinical Kit gives better clinical performance in regard to surface roughness and shade matching.
This study is investigated the characteristics and the comparison on blackware and whiteware at Gilmyeong-ri kilns, located Poncheon-si, Geonggi province at AD 19c using scientific analysis. It is measured by scientific analysis classified as microstructure observation, physical methods which involved chromaticity, specific gravity, absorption ratio and porosity, and chemical analysis of components of body and glaze. As a result, a particle and a pore of body surface appeared differently by the degree of vitrification. In glaze, Blackware have better on good vitrification than whiteware in the microstructure observation. The physical characteristics of chromaticity, specific gravity, absorption ratio and porosity differed according to degree of vitrification rather than porcelain types. In composition, body of blackware have higher ratio of $Fe_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$ than of whiteware. Also glaze of blackware have higher ratio of $Fe_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$, and lower ratio of $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ than whiteware. Especially, blackware have higher ratio in the composition of CaO and $P_2O_5$ by which ash is used or not.

It was confirmed that a white porcelain figurine in underglaze iron was damaged after exhibition. This study analyzes the current state of salt damage on the artifact and identifies the factors contributing to its deterioration by examining the material characteristics of the artifact and exhibition environment. The analysis will thus assist in preparing a conservation scheme for artifacts. The crystallized carbonate on the surface of the white porcelain figurine is a water-soluble alkali salt with high hygroscopicity and high solubility in water. This solubility increases as the temperature increases. The figurine was low-fired at approximately 1000℃. A lead glaze was applied, and thin cracks were formed on the glazed surface, indicating poor surface properties. Our analysis suggested that the showcase used in the exhibition likely created a moist environment resulting from condensation, as it was exposed to high temperature and relative humidity, particularly in comparison to the exhibition room where the temperature was regulated using an air conditioner. In addition, the artifacts in the showcase were exposed to sudden changes in temperature and relative humidity as the air conditioner was repeatedly turned on and off. Therefore, it can be deduced that the soluble salt remaining on the white porcelain figurine moved toward the surface of the relatively weak glaze as a result of the temperature, and the crystallized salt exacerbated surface damage as the moisture evaporated in a dry environment.
At the beginning of the Chos$\breve{o}$n dynasty, punch'$\breve{o}$ng began as a simplified form of inlaid celadon, and in the two following centuries it developed into a popular folk craft in various styles and expressive decorations; overtime, it was increasingly made to resemble whiteware, and its production stopped after the Japanese invasion of Korea. In the present study, the body and glaze compositions of punch'$\breve{o}$ng were examined and compared with those of celadon and whiteware, whose compositions have previously been compared with those of Chinese ceramics. Here, the analyzed shards were organized into 28 groups based on their production sites and archaeological characteristics. For each group, the body and glaze compositions of several shards(usually three to five) were obtained, averaged, and compared with those of the other groups. These comparisons showed that the majority of the punch'$\breve{o}$ng bodies were formed, like those of celadon and whiteware, with mica-quartz porcelain stone, which was commonly used in Yuezhou, Jingdezhen, and other southern Chinese kilns. The glazes consisted of clay materials and flux components made from various proportions of wood ash, burnt limestone (glaze ash) and crushed limestone. Overall, the punch'$\breve{o}$ng glazes resembled the Kory$\breve{o}$ celadon and Kory$\breve{o}$ whiteware glazes more closely than the Chos$\breve{o}$n white wareglazes. However, the $TiO_2$ levels found in the tested punch'$\breve{o}$ng were low, similar to those of Chos$\breve{o}$n whiteware; this indicated that glaze stone was used as the clay component of the punch'$\breve{o}$ng glazes, as was the case for Chos$\breve{o}$n whiteware. This study of the material characteristics of punch'$\breve{o}$ng may be used as a comparative framework for analyzing ceramic shards discovered at current and future excavations within Korea.
After adjusting glazed surface of laminate veneer porcelain by reduction in the clinical procedure, an additional polishing procedure is required to smoothen the roughened surface by reduction, as it is difficult to glaze it again in the furnace. In this study, four kinds of laminate veneer porcelain were ground with diamond points as done in the clinical procedure. The adjusted porcelain surface was polished with Durawhite stone, Ceramiste points, Exa cerapol, Porcelain polishing wheel, Diamond polishing paste. The degree of surface roughness was evaluated with SEM and profilometer at each step, The self glazed surface and the glazed surface with glazing powder were compared with the polished surface and surface roughness of four kinds of laminate veneer porcelain according to the polishing method and step were obserbed. The following results were obtained : 1. There was no difference in the average surface roughness Ra value and the surface roughness obserbed under SEM according to the polishing methods and steps used, among the four kinds of laminate veneer porcelain including Colorlogic, Exelco, Vintage, and Vitadur alpha product. 2. Due to porosities, the surface in the course of polishing by polishing instruments was rougher than the glazed surface, evaluated with a SEM. 3. Insta-Glaze diamond polishing paste has no statistical difference with self glazed group 1, although it has a lower value in average surface roughness Ra value. 4. Group 2 which was glazed with galzing powder was lowest in view of SEM, but it revealed higher surface roughness Ra value than group 1, the glazed surface and group 8, polished by diamond polishing paste, due to surface waveness. 5. Proper surface smoothness could not be in the surface roughness analysis of SEM and profilometer by Shofu laminate polishing kit composed of Diamond point, Durawhite stone and Ceramiste points. Based on the results of this study, the following conclusions can be drawn. We obtain low surface roughness than glazed surface by polishing instruments, but not perfect results clinically. In order to obtain a perfect clinical result or a surface smoothness comparable to glazed porcelain there is a need for further improvement of porcelain materials, condensa-tion techniques, polishing instruments and polishing methods. Furthermore card should be taken not to breakdown the glazed surface during the clinical and laboratory procedure.
The purpose of this study was to find out the correlation through comparative analysis of used materials and manufacturing techniques such as firing characteristics for sherds excavated from celadon kiln site in Punggil-ri, Jangheung. The color difference of the sherds was very wide, and even in the microstructure of the cross section of the glaze layer and the body layer, the celadons, whitewares, blackware, and stonewares could not be characterized because they did not show distinct differences from each other. As a result of estimating the firing temperature through the analysis of constituent minerals and thermal analysis, most of them were estimated to have been fired at 1000℃, but some were fired at high temperatures above 1200℃. It was difficult to clearly distinguish between celadon and whiteware even in the major compositional content of bodies. In the statistical analysis, glaze could be classified three group according to the type of sherds, but the bodies of celadons, whitewares, and blackware classified into one similar group. It is considered that it is not more likely differences in raw materials but some ingredients were removed or added during the purification process. Conclusionally, in this kiln site was found through scientific analysis that there were technical attempts to produce various ceramics, and that the manufacturing techniques and materials of ceramics were in an early stage that was not stabilized.
