  • DC high-temperature superconducting(HTS) cable system has attracted a great deal of interest from the view point of low loss, dense structure and large capacity. A HTS cable system is made of cable and termination. The insulating materials and insulation technology must be solved for the long life, reliability and compact of cable system. In this paper, we will report on the dielectric breakdown characteristics of insulating materials for HTS cable and termination. The AC, DC and lightning impulse breakdown strength of laminated polypropylene paper(PPLP) and glass fiber reinforced plastic(GFRP) have been measured under nitrogen pressures in the range of 0.l-0.4MPa. PPLP and GFRP are found to have a significantly higher DC breakdown strength. Also, DC surface flashover voltage of negative polarity is slightly higher than that of positive polarity in GFRP.

  • Fiber metal hybrid laminate (FML) can be used as an economic material with superior mechanical properties and light weight than conventional metal by bonding of metal and FRP. However, there are disadvantages that it is difficult to predict fracture behavior because of the large difference in properties depending on the type of fiber and lamination conditions. In this paper, we study the failure behavior of hybrid materials with laminated glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP, GEP118, woven type) in Al6061-T6 alloy. The Al alloys were coated with GFRP 1, 3, and 5 layers, and fracture behavior was analyzed by using a static test and a low cycle fatigue test. In the low cycle fatigue test, strain - life analysis and the total strain energy density method were used to analyze and predict the fatigue life. The Al alloy did not have tensile properties strengthening effect due to the GFRP coating. The fatigue hysteresis geometry followed the behavior of the Al alloy, the base material, regardless of the GFRP coating and number of coatings. As a result of the low cycle fatigue test, the fatigue strength was increased by the coating of GFRP, but it did not increase proportionally with the number of GFRP layers.

  • Various failure modes occur in the concrete beams reinforced with GFRP(Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic) under initial condition and repairing patterns. In this study, the failure behaviors of concrete beams restrengthened with GFRP sheet with slightly higher elastic modulus than concrete were investigated. For the tests, concrete beams with 24 MPa were manufactured, and the effects of initial notch, overlapping, end-strip reinforcement, and fiber anchors were analyzed on failure load. The cases of GFRP overlap around notch and the initial notch showed increasing failure loads similar to those of normal restrengthened case since the epoxy of the saturated GFRP sufficiently repaired the notch area. Compared to the control case without restrengthening of GFRP, the concrete with initial notch showed 0.78 of loading ratio and normal restrengthening showed 4.43~5.61 times of increasing ratio of failure loading, where interface-debonding from flexural crack were mainly observed. The most ideal failure behavior, break of GFRP, was observed when end-strip over 1/3 height from bottom and fiber anchor were installed, which showed increasing failure load over 150 % to normal restrengthening.

  • A composite bridge deck system assembled from a modular profile with double-rectangular cell has been developed for highway bridges. This study is focused on the experimental characterization of flexure performance of pultruded GFRP deck under static loading. Several tests were conducted on single modules and adhesively bonded 2 and 5-modules. The specimen details such as dimensions, material properties and fiber architecture, and experimental set-up and testing procedure have been addressed. It is found that the presented GFRP composite modular deck is very efficient for use in bridges.

  • To understand the tensile behaviors of GFRP at low temperature, three types of specimen have been used in this study. Tensile properties and fracture mechanisms for three orthogonal orientations of plain weave glass fabric reinforced epoxy resin laminate were investigated at temperature range of about -30 to $15^{\circ}C$. The tensile properties of axial and edge type specimen decrease slightly with decreasing temperature to $-20^{\circ}C$. However, at $-30^{\circ}C$ the decreases in the tensile properties increased considerably. Below $-20^{\circ}C$, thickness type specimen showed a marked decreases in the tensile properties. It was obvious that the fracture manner of thickness type specimen was adhesive failure at above $-10^{\circ}C$ and a mixed adhesive and cohesive failure at below $-20^{\circ}C$.

  • The effects of fiber orientation on acoustic emission(AE) characteristics have been studied for the unidirectional and satin-weave, continuous glass-fiber reinforced plastic(UD-GFRP and SW-GFRP) tensile specimens. Reflection and transmission optical microscopy was used for investigation of the damage zone of specimens. AE signals were classified as different types by using short time fourier transform(STFT) : AE signals with high intensity and high frequency band were due to fiber fracture, while weak AE signals with low frequency band were due to matrix and interfacial cracking. The feature in the rate of hit-events having high amplitudes showed a process of fiber breakages, which expressed the characteristic fracture processes of individual fiber-reinforced plastics with different fiber orientations and with different notching directions. As a consequence, the fracture behavior of the continuous GFRP could be monitored as nondestructive evaluation(NDE) through the AE technique.

  • This paper presents an investigation into the seismic response characteristics of a proposed ligh-weight pedestrian cable-stayed bridge made entirely from Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics(GFRP). The study employs three dimensional finite element models to study and compare the dynamic characteristics and the seismic response of the GFRP bridge to a conventional Steel-Concrete (SC) cable-stayed bridge alternative. The two bridges were subjected to three synthetic earthquakes that differ in the frequency content characteristics. The performance of the GFRP bridge was compared to that of the SC bridge by normalizing the live load and the seismic internal forces with respect to the dead load internal forces. The normalized seismically induced internal forces were compared to the normalized live load internal forces for each design alternative. The study shows that the design alternatives have different dynamic characteristics. The light GFRP alternative has more flexible deck motion in the lateral direction than the heavier SC alternative. While the SC alternative has more vertical deck modes than the GFRP alternative, it has less lateral deck modes than the GFRP alternative in the studied frequency range. The GFRP towers are more flexible in the lateral direction than the SC towers. The GFRP bridge tower attracted less normalized base shear force than the SC bridge towers. However, earthquakes, with peak acceleration of only 0.1 g, and with a variety of frequency content could induce high enough seismic internal forces at the tower bases of the GFRP cable-stayed bridge to govern the structural design of such bridge. Careful seismic analysis, design, and detailing of the tower connections are required to achieve satisfactory seismic performance of GFRP long span bridges.

  • A study of vehicle weight lightening has been progressed to reduce the fuel consumption. In this paper, the body floor in an EV (Electric Vehicle) bus has been applied by composites as CFRP and GFRP. In order to analyse a various reliability and safety, an experiment and FEM analysis was carried out to obtain weight lightening. Especially, the joint. An effective design is obtained through an experiment as well as FEM analysis. Results of stress analysis of GFRP material showed twice as much displacement than those of CFRP material. Among three kinds of joint methods, the bond joint method is occurred to a substantial shape change in the body and floor. It is found that the rivet joints are fairly suitable for stress sustaining capability.

  • This paper deals with the analysis of the optimum value of honeycomb core considering variable design parameter. As thickness and height of core rises in design parameter, natural frequency of laminated composite plate increases. The angle-phy has the maximum value when the plate of honeycomb core join to opposite direction. This paper shows that the natural frequency of CFRP was higher than that of GFRP and mode shapes were various at angle-ply.
