  • Friction and wear characteristics of short fiber reinforced and particulate filled composites were investigated experimentally. Two kinds of fiber composites, chopped graphite fiber reinforced PAI(polyamide-imide) and glass fiber reinforced PAI, and a particulate composite, TiO$_{2}$ powder filled PAI, were selected for the friction and wear test since these are important engineering materials based on a new high temperature engineering plastic. All the specimens were cut into proper size for cylinder-on-plate type wear test. Frictional forces were measured by employing a load transducer and wear rates were calculated by measuring weight loss during wear test. The experimental results are reported in this paper and carefully discussed to explain the friction and wear behavior qualitatively. The frictional behavior is interpreted by considering four basic friction components which are believed to the genesis of friction and the wear behavior is explained by applying delamination theory of wear.

  • In order to find an effect of structural changes due to variation of addition ratio of anhydride hardener and postcuring herat-treatments upon electrical properties of epoxy composites, the dielectric properties over a frequency range from 30[Hz] to l[MHz] were investigated in the temperature range of 20-180[.deg. C]. From the dielectric properties, the a peaks related with glass-transition phenomena of epoxy network appeared near 130[.deg. C], the conduction loss in high temperature region above 150[.deg. C] due to thermal dissociation of hardener started off with the low frequency side and the .betha. peak concerned with contribution of movable unreacted terminal epoxy groups and curing agents in the glass states concurred with the high-frequency side below 20[.deg. C]. And an effect of an hydride hardener upon structural changes and of postcuring heat treatments upon structural stability in epoxy composites would be explained through the estimation of the distribution of relaxation times and the activation energy for a .alpha. peak according to the WLF equations.

  • Construction industry is one of the largest markets for composite materials. Composite materials are mostly utilized as surface coatings or concrete reinforcements, and they can hardly be found as a load bearing member in buildings. The three-dimensional composite structures with considerable bending, compressive and shear strengths are capable to be used as construction load bearing members. However, these composites cannot compete with other materials due to higher manufacturing costs. If the cost issue is resolved or their excellent performance is taken into consideration to overcome disadvantages related to economic-competitive challenges, these 3D composites can significantly reduce the construction time and result in lighter and safer buildings. Sandwich composite panels reinforced with 3D woven glass fabrics are amongst composites with highest bending strength. The current study investigates the possibility of utilizing these composite materials to construct ceilings and their application as slabs. One-to-one scale experimental loading of these composite panels shows a remarkable bending strength. Simulation results using ABAQUS software, also indicate that theoretical predictions of bending behavior of these panels are in good agreement with the observed experimental results.

  • Polymer composites, especially glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) are finding ever-increasing applications in areas such as superconductivity, space technology, cryogenic rocket engines, and cryogenic storage vessels. Various components made of polymer composites are much lighter than their metallic counterparts but have equivalent strength for ultra-low temperature applications. In this paper, we have investigated the tensile properties of an indigenously prepared unidirectional cylindrical hollow composite tube for its use as a neck of the cryogenic vessel. XRD and SEM of the tube are completed before cryogenic conditioning to ascertain the fiber and resin distribution in the matrix. The result shows that for composites, after 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes of cryogenic conditioning at 77K in a liquid nitrogen bath, the strength and modulus increase significantly with the increase of strain rate and reach the optimum value for 45 minutes of conditioning. The results are encouraging as they will be helpful in assessing the suitability of GFRP in the structural design of epoxy-based components for cryogenic applications.

  • Mechanical characteristics of composite laminates and cylindrical shell using scrim of glass scrim are evaluated in this paper. Composite laminates and cylindrical shells are made by inserting carbon scrim or glass scrim between layers. The mechanical properties are routinely characterized by ASTM stands. Experimental results show that the mechanical properties of UD prepreg in the transverse direction are highly improved by inderting scrims between layers.

  • This study was performed to investigate the material behavior of hybrid thermoplastic composites contained glass fiber and calcium carbonate. The composite was prepared with each combination ratio of calcium carbonate, and the content of glass fiber was fixed with 10% by weight. In order to investigate the material behavior for various combination ratio, tension test, flexural test, and impact test were performed. Microscopic observation were conducted to examine the fractured surface of specimen for tension test. And the material behavior of the hybrid thermoplastic composite immersed in salt water with definite time was investigated.

  • During fatigue loading of composite materials, damage accumulation can be monitored by measuring their material properties. In this study, fatigue modulus is used as the damage index. Fatigue life of composite materials may be predicted analytically using damage models which are based on fatigue modulus and resultant strain. Damage models are propesed as funtions of applied stress level, number of fatigue cycle and fatigue life. The predicted life was comparable to the experimental result obtained using E-glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin materials and pultruded glass fiber reinforce polyester composites under two-stress level fatigue loading.

  • In the present study, Zr-base metallic glass(MG)/diamond composites are fabricated using a combination of gas-atomization and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The densification behaviors of mixtures of soft MG and hard diamond powders during consolidation process are investigated. The influence of mixture characteristics on the densification is discussed and several mechanism explaining the influence of diamond particles on consolidation behaviour are proposed. The experimental results show that consolidation is enhanced with increasing diamond/Metallic Glass(MG) size ratio, while the diamond fraction is fixed.

  • Tire is one of the key components in automobiles. Especially, most vibrations during driving are resulted from the im-balancing of tire-wheel composites. In this study, this problem has been solved by using glass beads as a balancing material. In addition, the glass beads are coated using several materials to reduce the tendency of aggregation of glass beads.
