  • The optimum condition of glass fiber/epoxy composites was investigated according to mixing ratio of two epoxy matrices. Novolac type epoxy and isocyanate modified epoxy were used as composites matrix. Based on chemical composition of mixing matrix, optimum mixing ratio of epoxy resins was obtained through various experiments. In order to investigate thermal stability and interface of epoxy resin, glass transition temperature was observed by DSC instrument, and static contact angle was measured by reflecting microscope. Change of IR peak and $T_g$ was conformed according to different epoxy mixing ratio. After fabrication of glass fiber/epoxy composites, tensile, compression, and flexural properties were tested by UTM by room and high temperature. The composites exhibited best mechanical properties when epoxy mixing ratio was 1:1.

  • The effect of several $SiO_2-B_2O_3-Al_2O_3$-R(R;Ca, Sr, Ba) borosilicate glass system on sintering behavior, dielectric properties and mechanical properties of glass/ceramic composites were investigated. The amount of '+2 valency' metal elements(Ca, Sr, Ba) were examined in LTCC composite of low k glass with cordierite filler. It was sintered for 60minutes in temperature range from 850C to 950. Properties of frit and glass/ceramic composites were analyzed by DTA, XRD, SEM, Network Analyzer, UTM and so on. Dielectric constant ($\varepsilon_r$) and $Q{\times}f_0$ (Q) of the composite with 50% glass contents demonstrated $\varepsilon_r$ = 5.4 $Q{\times}f_0$ = 1600 GHz. Sintering was complete and maximum bending strength of 160MPa was obtained.

  • The low temperature sintering and the dielectric properties of $Al_2O_3/SiO_2$-zinc borosilicate glass composites were investigated in the view of the application for LTCC. When the sintering was conducted at $900^{\circ}C$ $ZnAl_2O_4$ and $ZnB_2O_4$ compounds formed at the $Al_2O_3$-rich and the $SiO_2$-rich compositions, respectively. The reaction between ZBS glass and $Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ caused the formation of these compounds. The $Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ ratio affected the dielectric properties. The excellent dielectric properties, i.e., Q$\times$f value= 40,000 GHz and ${\varepsilon}_r$=4.5, were obtained in the $Al_2O_3/SiO_2$-ZBS glass system and fabricated the LTCC substrate materials.

  • Influence of $Nd_2O_3$ addition to $ZnO-B_2O_3$-based glass on the water leaching resistance of the glass was first investigated. The optimized $Nd_2O_3-ZnO-B_2O_3$ (NZB) glass was ball milled for varying time, mixing with followed by $Al_2O_3$ crystalline phase to form $Al_2O_3$-NZB glass composites at $875^{\circ}C$ for 1h. Microwave dielectric properties of the composites were investigated as a function of the ball milling time of the NZB glass. Dielectric constant and quality factor were 5.70 and 9497 GHz, respectively, when the NZB glass was ball milled for 6h prior to mixing with $Al_2O_3$.

  • Materials, matrices mixed with various kinds of conductive or magnetic powder, such as ferrite, have been used as the electromagnetic wave absorbing ones, so called RAM(radar absorbing material). The structure that does not only have electromagnetic waves absorbing property like RAM but also supports loads is called RAS(radar absorbing structure). One of the existing manufacturing process of RAS is to compound with conductive powders the glass fiber-reinforced composite with good permeability and the ability to support loads. The process, however, causes a number of problems, such as the degradation in the mechanical properties of the composite, especially, interlamina shear strength. In this study, mechanical properties of glass fabric/epoxy composite containing 7wt% carbon black powders were measured and compared with pure glass fabric/epoxy composites.

  • Multi-layer circuit card for semiconductor inspection was fabricated by LTCC technology. After a proper impedance design without electrical interference, ceramic tapes with the composition of $CaO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2-B_2O_3$ glass and $Al_2O_3$ were prepared. The electrode with silver paste printed on the tape. Printed ceramic sheets were then laminated and sintered. Densities and dielectric properties were measured. The microstructure, fracture surface of the region of via and matching state of substrate-electrode were observed. The durability of plated outside electrode were examined by hardness and scratch test.

  • The sintering behavior of $BaO-B_{2}O_{3}-ZnO$, which is Pb-free glass-ceramic system, was examined as functions of the composition and the amount and particle size of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ filler. Different kinds of modifiers were added and $Al_{2}O_{3}$ fillers with different particle sizes ($1.5{\mu}m$ and $4.5{\mu}m$) were added. The glass frit-filler composites were sintered in the temperature range $520{\sim}580^{\circ}C$. X-ray diffraction results revealed that some of the composites crystallized during sintering. Dielectric constant and thermal expansion coefficient the glass-ceramics were analyzed.

  • Composites are very useful material for light train carbody due to its high specific strength and lightweight characteristics. The composites, called 3-D board, are developed with a special stitching method. In this process, the glass fiber fabrics of skin material and foam core material are stitched together with glass fiber thread. The glass thread in Z-axis turns into FRP form. The conventional delamination problem can be solved with 3-D sandwich structure. In addition, with the lower density of foam, the weight of the panel and the operation expenses can be highly reduced. To evaluate the usefulness of the 3-D board, the double-deck light train carbody is studied. The stress analyses are carried out under various loads and boundary conditions with FEM Code, ANSYS. On comparing with the aluminum carbody, 3-D board carbody can be reduced by about 2 ton for the total weight of carbody.

  • Many of researches regarding mechanical properties of composite materials are associated with humid environment and temperature. Especially the temperature is a very important factor influencing the design of thermoplastic composites. However, the effect of temperature on impact behavior of reinforced composites have not yet been fully explored. An approach which predicts critical fracture toughness GIC was performed by the impact test in this work The main goal of this work is to study effects of temperature in the impact test with glass fiber/polypropylene(GF/pp) composites. The critical fracture energy and failure mechanisms of GF/PP composites are investigated in the temperature range of $60^{\circ}C\;to\;-50^{\circ}C$ by impact test. The critical fracture energy shows a maximum at ambient temperature and it tends to decrease as temperature goes up or goes down. Major failure mechanisms can be classified such as fiber matrix debonding, fiber pull-out and/or delamination and matrix deformation.

  • The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of temperature on the results of Charpy impact test for glass fiber reinforced polyurethane(GF/PUR) composites. The Charpy impact test were conducted in the temperature range from -50$^{\circ}$ to 50$^{\circ}$. The impact fracture toughness of GF/PUR composites was considerably affected by temperature and it was shown that the maximum value was appeared at room temperature. It is believed that sensitivity of notch on impact fracture energy were increased with decrease in temperature of specimen. As the GF/PUR composites exposed in low temperature, impact fracture toughness of composites decreased gradually owing to the decrease of interface bonding strength caused by difference of thermal expansion coefficient between the glass fiber/polyurethane resin. And decrease of interface bonding strength of composites with decrease in specimen temperature was ascertained by SEM photographs of Charpy impact fracture surface.
