The decomposition of hydrogen peroxide was used for supplementing the oxygen during batch xanthan fermentations in a bubble column bioreactor in order to escape the oxygen transfer limitation that occurred at the high viscosity of culture broths. The xanthan production, however, was inhibited reversibly by dosing hydrogen peroxide. On the other hand, fluidized particles of glass beads with 8 mm diameter led to high gas-liquid oxygen transfer rates in three-phase fluidized beds, which resulted in higher space-time yields of the xanthan production compared to in the bubble column bioreactors.

Dry sliding wear behavior of electro-pressure sintered Co, $Co-20\;wt.\%$ CuSn and $Co-20\;wt.\%$ WC composites were investigated. Wear tests of the materials were carried out using a pin-on-disk wear tester at various loads of 10N-100N under a constant sliding speed condition of 0.38m/s against glass ($83\%\;SiO_2$) beads. Sliding distances were varied with a range of $100m{\sim}600m$. A scanning electron microscopy was used to examine morphologies of worn surfaces, cross-sections, and wear debris. The $Co-20\;wt.\%$ WC composite had the highest and the $Co-20\;wt.\%$ CuSn composite showed the lowest wear resistance among the tested materials. All specimens exhibited low friction coefficients ranging from 0.12 to 0.4 at the applied load of 100N.

A new monitoring system has been developed for in-situ and realtime measurement of ozone transport in unsaturated porous media using a fiber optic sensor. The calibration of the fiber optic transflection dip probe (FOTDP) system was successfully carried out at various ozone concentrations using a column with length of 30 cm and diameter of 5 cm packed with glass beads, which don't react with gaseous ozone. The breakthrough curves (BTCs) of ozone was obtained by converting the normalized intensity into ozone concentration. The FOTDP system reflected the ideal transport phenomena of gas phase ozone at various flow rates. The FOTDP system worked well for in-situ monitoring of gas phase ozone at various water saturations and in presence of SOM. However, the FOTDP system did not measure the ozone concentration at more than 70% water saturation.
A rectangular type circulating fluidized bed (CFB) with an internal nozzle and two partition walls was proposed. In this modified CFB, an internal nozzle and two slanted partition walls were additionally set in the riser. This cold mode apparatus was made of acrylic resin; the riser was 1500mm high and $1000{\times}1000mm^2$ in the cross sectional area, the internal nozzle was 200mm high and 10mm in the inner diameter, and the partition wall was 7mm thick. Glass beads of $91{\mu}m$ in the mean diameter were employed as bed materials. In the cold mode by using the proposed CFB with an internal nozzle, it was possible to change the particle hold up by changing the gas flow ratio of the nozzle to the total(Qn/Qt). It was found that the inflection point which devided the bed structure between the dense and the dilute phase in the riser varied with Qn/Qt.
A Circulating Fluidized-Bed (CFB) with an internal nozzle and a partition wall was proposed. The technique of fluidization is related to operations first used commercially in the fields of metallurgical and mechanical engineering such as the heat treatment of metals and power station combustors. In the modified CFB, an internal nozzle and a partition wall were additionally set in the main bed. This cold mode CFB apparatus made of acrylic resin; the main bed is 1,500mm high and 100mm in the inner diameter, the internal nozzle is 130mm high and 10mm in the inner diameter, and the partition wall is 7mm thick and 100mm in the diameter. Glass beads of $89{\mu}m$ in the mean diameter were employed as bed materials.

미크론 자성비드 검출용 바이오센서에 활용하는 GMR-SV 박막을 이온빔 스퍼터링 증착법으로 glass/Ta(5.8 nm)/NiFe(5 nm)/Cu(t nm)/NiFe(3 nm)/FeMn(12 nm)/Ta(5.8 nm)의 구조를 갖도록 증착하였다.

Effect of phase transformation and grain-size variation of hot-pressed cobalt on its dry sliding wear was investigated. The sliding wear test was carried out against glass (83% $SiO_2$) beads at 100N load using a pin-on-disk wear tester. Worn surfaces, cross sections, and wear debris were examined by an SEM. Phases of the specimen and wear debris were identified by an XRD. Thermal transformation of the cobalt from the hcp $\varepsilon$ phase to the $\gamma$ (fcc) phase during the wear was detected, which was deduced as the wear mechanism of the sintered cobalt.

Fouling and cleaning tests are performed for a uniquely designed 7,000 ㎉/hr fluidized bed heat exchanger for exhaust gas heat recovery. Fuel rich condition is maintained in the combustor for a limited time period to generate soot that is to be deposited on the heat transfer surfaces (fouling) and 600 Um glass beads are circulated inside the heat exchanger system for cleaning and enhancing the heat transfer performance. According to the present experimental study, performance degradation mode could be monitored and the effect of particle circulation on the heat transfer improvement could be identified. Through the present study, it is demonstrated that circulating particles contribute not only to the fouling reduction in gas side, but also to the heat transfer enhancement of the unit, while other possible aging factors including water side corrosion seemed to contribute to the accumulated performance deterioration.
The aerobic bacterium Xanthomonas campestris was cultivated continuously in a three-phase fluidized bed bioreactor to produce extracellular polysaccharide xanthan, Fluidized particles of 8.0 mm glass beads were used for disintegrating the large air bubbles even at high viscosities to improve the gas-liquid oxygen transfer rate. Xanthin productivity [kg xanthan/kg cell dry mass·h] and molecular weight increased, with dilution rate in the continuous xanthan fermentations. The specific xanthan productivities were not limited by the oxygen transfer rate and were much higher in the continuous cultivations than those predicted by the results of the batch xanthan fermentations.
In developing high temperature molds with advantages of the sand and precision (investment) castings, mechanical properties of the mold were improved through homogeneous coating of starting powders with an inorganic binder and improvement of fabrication process. Beads with mullite composition were employed for properties of the mold under high temperature, which was compared with artificial sands. Precursors of silica and sodium oxide were used as starting materials for an inorganic binder to achieve homogeneous coating on the starting powders. Strength was enhanced by the glass phase converted from the inorganic binder through heat treatment process. Also, two kinds of process, wet and dry processes, were incorporated to prepare mold specimens. Consequently, fabrication process of the mold with superior strength and high temperature applicability, compared with the previous molds for sand casting, could be suggested through control of the starting material and enhancement of the vitrification efficiency.
