Spark Plasma Sintering and Ultra-Precision Machining Characteristics of SiC

  • The liquid-phase sintering method was used to prepare a glass lens forming core composed of SiC-$Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$. Spark plasma sintering was used to obtain dense sintered bodies. The sintering characteristics of different SiC sources and compositions of additives were studied. Results revealed that, owing to its initial larger surface area, $\alpha$-SiC offers sinterability that is superior to that of $\beta$-SiC. A maximum density of $3.32\;g/cm^3$ (theoretical density [TD] of 99.7%) was obtained in $\alpha$-SiC-10 wt% ($6Al_2O_3-4Y_2O_3$) sintered at $1850^{\circ}C$ without high-energy ball milling. The maximum hardness and compression stress of the sintered body reached 2870 Hv and 1110 MPa, respectively. The optimum ultra-precision machining parameters were a grinding speed of 1243 m/min, work spindle rotation rate of 100 rpm, feed rate of 0.5 mm/min, and depth of cut of $0.2\;{\mu}m$. The surface roughnesses of the thus prepared final products were Ra = 4.3 nm and Rt = 55.3 nm for the aspheric lens forming core and Ra = 4.4 nm and Rt = 41.9 for the spherical lens forming core. These values were found to be sufficiently low, and the cores showed good compatibility between SiC and the diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating material. Thus, these glass lens forming cores have great potential for application in the lens industry.

혼합액상 전구체를 이용한 유리 중공구체의 제조에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Fabrication of Hollow Glass Sphere by Using a Liquid-mix Precursor)

  • 고분자 화합물의 첨가제로서 개질제, 물성 향상제, 충진제, 강화제 등의 용도로 사용되고 있는 유리 중공구체를 혼합액상 전구체를 사용하여 제조하였다. 혼합액상 전구체는 40% 규산나트륨($Na_2O:SiO_2$= 1:2) 수용액에 불용제인 붕산과 팽창제인 요소를 혼합한 용액이며, 이 용액을 오븐에 건조시킨 후, 볼밀로 분쇄시켜 기체 화염로에 투입될 원료 입자를 제조하였다. 유리 중공구체의 물성에 영향을 미치는 인자로서는 로에 투입될 원료 입자의 크기($53{\sim}63{\mu}m$, $63{\sim}180{\mu}m$)와 로 내부의 온도($800{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$), 그리고 요소의 변화량(0~30 g)을 택하여 실험하였으며, 실험 결과 유리 중공구체의 평균 입경은 원료 입자의 크기가 작을수록, 로 내부의 온도가 클수록, 그리고 요소의 조성이 증가할수록 증가하는 결과를 보여 주었다. 또한, 유리 중공구체의 파쇄 강도는 요소의 양이 증가할수록 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다.

유공유리분말 혼입 고강도 콘크리트의 물성에 관한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study on the Material Properties of High Strength Concrete with Hollow Glass Powder)

  • 본 연구에서는 70MPa급 고강도 콘크리트에서 유공유리분말(HGP)의 적용성을 확인하기 위하여 HGP 사용량에 따라서 프레쉬 상태와 경화 상태의 물성을 검토하였고, 그 실험결과는 다음과 같다. 유동 특성은 HGP의 사용량이 증가할수록 슬럼프플로가 약간 증가하는 하는 것으로 나타났고 T500은 HGP의 사용량이 증가할수록 약간 단축되었으며, 철근 통과성은 HGP의 볼베어링 효과로 인해 개선되는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 사용량 1.0kg/㎥에서 통과성 0등급으로 가장 양호한 철근통과성을 발휘하였다. 레올로지 특성으로는 HGP 1.0kg/㎥에서 소성점도가 Plain 대비 40% 정도 감소하여 HGP가 고강도 콘크리트의 소성점도를 낮추는 효과가 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 하지만 HGP 2.0kg/㎥에서는 1.0kg/㎥보다 오히려 소성점도가 크게 나타났다. 실험을 통하여 HGP가 고강도 콘크리트의 작업성 향상에 도움이 되는 것을 확인할 수 있었으며 사용량 1.0kg/㎥ 이 가장 적절한 것으로 판단된다. 또한 HGP가 콘크리트 압축강도에 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 확인되었다.

Assessment of flowing ability of self-compacting mortars containing recycled glass powder

  • This paper investigates the effect of recycled glass powder (RGP) on flowing properties of self-compacting mortars (SCMs) containing different ratios of fillers and superplasticizer dosages. Fly ash (FA), nano-silica (NS), micro-silica (MS), metakaolin (MK) and rice husk ash (RHA) are used as fillers and their synergistic effect with RFP is studied. The effects of fillers and high-range water reducer (HRWR) on flowing ability of mortars are primarily determined by slump flow and V-funnel flow time tests. The results showed that for composites with a higher RGP content, the mortar flowing ability increased but tended to decrease when the composites containing 10% MK or 5% RHA. However, the flowing ability of samples incorporating 5% RGP and 10% SF or 25% FA showed an opposite result that their slump flow spread decreased and then increased with increasing RGP content. For specimens with 3% NS, the influence of RGP content on flowing properties was not significant. Except RHA and MS, the fillers studied in this paper could reduce the dosage of HRWR required for achieving the same followability. Also, the mixture parameters were determined and indicated that the flowability of mixtures was also affected by the content of sand and specific surface area of cement materials. It is believed that excess fine particles provided ball-bearing effect, which could facilitate the movement of coarse particles and alleviate the interlocking action among particles. Also, it can be concluded that using fillers in conjunction with RGP as cementitious materials can reduce the material costs of SCM significantly.

고속 충격실험에 의한 적층 복합재의 파동전파에 관한 연구 (Wave Propagation of Laminated Composites by the Hgih-Velocity Impact Experiment)

  • The wave propagation characteristics of laminated composites subjected to a transverse high-velocity impact of a steel ball is investigated. For this purpose, high-velocity impact experiments were conducted to obtain the strain response histories, and a finite element analysis based on the higher-order shear deformation theory in conjunction with the static contact law is used. Test materials for investigation are glass/epoxy laminated composite materials with $[0^{\circ}/45^{\circ}/0^{\circ}/-45^{\circ}]_{2s}$ and $[90^{\circ}/-45^{\circ}/90^{\circ}-45^{\circ}/90^{\circ}]_{2s}$ stacking sequences. As a result, the strain responses obtained from the experiments represented the wave propagation characteristics in the transversely impact, also the wave propagation velocities obtained from high-velocity impact experiments and wave propagation theory agree well.

The Impact Stresses and Wave Propagation of Laminated Composites

  • This paper demonstrates the impact stresses and wave propagation characteristics of glass/epoxy laminates subjected to the low-velocity impact by a steel ball theoretically and experimentally. A plate finite element model in conjunction with experimental contact laws is used for the theoretical investigation. The specimens for statical indentation and impact test are composed of $[0/45/0/-45/0]_28 and [90/45/90/-45/90]_28$ stacking sequences and have clamped-simply supported boundary conditions. Finally, these two results are compared and then the impulsive stress and wave propagation characteristics of this laminated composite are studied.

  • LAS-system ceramic powder, spodumene ($Li_2O{\cdot}Al_2O_3{\cdot}4SiO_2$), was successfully synthesized by a chemical solution technique employing PVA(polyvinyl alcohol) as an organic carrier. The PVA content affected the microstructure of porous precursor gels and the crystalline development. The optimum PVA content contributed to homogeneous distribution of metal ions in the precursor gel and it resulted in the synthesis of glass free $\beta$-spodumene powder having a specific surface area of $7.57\;m^2/g$. The agglomerated $\beta$-spodumene powders were also enough soft to grind to fine powders by a simple ball milling process. The microstructures of the densified powder compacts were strongly dependant on the minor phases of spodumene solid solution and amount of liquid phase, which were formed from the inhomogeneous precursors.

  • ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) powder was synthesized by precipitation method. ITO colloidal solutions for coating on glass were fabricated by ball milling method. ITO colloidal solution with variation of concentration from 2% to 15% were fabricated ITO thin film measured sheet resistance and transmittance. In the result, 15% sol showed the lowest value of sheet resistance, 2% sol showed the highest value of transmittance. In addition, effect of annealing temperature and $SiO_2$ film were investigated.

Water Lubrication System Supported by High-density Hydrophilic Polymer Brush

  • Surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) was carried out to produce high-density poly(MPC) brush on silicon wafer. Frictional properties of poly(MPC) was investigated by by sliding a glass ball (${\phi}\;10\;nm$) on the substrates over a distance of 20 mm at a sliding velocity of 90 mm/min under loading of 0.49 N at 298 K. Higher friction coefficients were observed in dry N2 atmosphere and in toluene condition, whereas the friction coefficients decreased to 0.02 in humid air and in water. It is supposed that water-swollen poly(MPC) brush works as a lubricant to moderate the interaction between brush and probe.

Enhanced Electron Emission from Carbon Nanotube Paste after Firing

  • After multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) powder was crushed with ball milling process, it was mixed with organic vehicles. And then CNT paste was printed on ITO coated glass substrate. The field emission characteristics of CNT pastes fired in air atmosphere was better than that of CNT paste fired in Ar ambient due to less organic residues after firing.
