A Study on the Detail of Vertical Stiffener of Plate Girder (플레이트 거더교의 수직 보강재 구조상세에 관한 연구)

  • The stress patterns of vertical stiffener of plate girder bridge were examined by existing data of actual measurement stress for steel bridges and the structural details of vertical stiffener of plate girder bridge having seeked rationalization and abbreviation were investigated by 1/2 bridge model. As the results, the out-of-plane stress occur in the upper parts of vertical stiffner and fatigue cracks by the action of alternative stress is apt to occur in web plate of lower parts vertical stiffener. Also, the gap between lower parts of vertical stiffner and lower flange of plate girder bridge seeking rationalization and abbreviation is effective to adopt 100mm.

Stiffened Effect of Knee Brace of Cross-Beam in Steel Box-girder Bridges (강박스거더교 가로보 니브레이스(Knee Brace)의 보강효과)

  • Recently, a knee brace is usually installed in connection between cross-beam and main-girder of steel box-girder bridges. The knee brace is installed as a structural stiffener and mainly aims to relieve stress at joints and to prevent main-girder from lateral deformation. However, research on the knee brace is insufficient to obviously evaluate the necessity. The stiffened effect of knee brace is determined by using finite element analyses. Stress distribution, stress level of members and deflection of the cross-beam are evaluated by parametric FE analysis for the installation of knee brace and the depth ratio of cross-beam/steel box girder. It is seen from comparison of numerical analysis results that the knee brace installed in cross-beam of steel boxgirders bridges is not efficient as a structural stiffener with respect to stress relief and stiffened effect.

An Experimental Study on the Stress Distribution in Steel Box Girder Bridge (강박스거더교의 응력분배 거동에 관한 실측연구)

  • It is important to increase the economy and efficiency of the diaphragm of the steel box girder bridge design. In this study, an experimental test is performed in a 4-span steel box girder bridge, which was under constructed according to the dead load of slab concrete and vehicle load. The test result is analyzed to verify the stress distribution of the diaphragm and the middle span. Next, stresses on the vertical stiffener are analyzed according to height. Stresses on the diaphragm with equal height are arranged respectively. Also, the stress distribution of the diaphragm and the middle span. Also, the vertical stiffeners in the diaphragm was studied, and using the analyzed results, the proper length of the ratio of vehicle load with curing concrete to vehicle load with asphalt is calculated in each part of the steel box girder bridge. The results provide data that serve as basis for an economical and efficient design for the steel box girder bridge diaphragm.

On the effects of hull-girder vibration upon fatigue strength of a Post-Panamax container ship disaggregated by short-term sea state

  • The effects of hull-girder vibration on the fatigue strength of a Post-Panamax container ship are discussed in the present paper. Firstly, the short-term sea states are categorized according to the occurrence probability of each sea state. Time histories of hull-girder stress in short-term sea states are calculated by means of a nonlinear simulation code of ship response assuming that the hull-girder is rigid and flexible. Then, the calculated stress peaks are processed by the rainflow counting method, where two different counting procedures are used based on the considerations of crack propagation behaviors. Finally, the fatigue damage in life time of the ship in each categorized short-term sea state is estimated by means of Miner's rule. Based on the calculated results, the effects of hull-girder vibrations on the fatigue damage are clarified by disaggregated damage from short-term sea state.

  • A modular fish-bone girder pier consists of one main girder system named as "Spine Girder". Therefore, this pier can be most affected by torsion as well as flexural bending. The design considerations of the fish-bone girder pier are proposed to assure the reasonable design in this study. In order to investigate the behavior characteristics, structural analysis F.E model is developed, and the verification of the developed model is performed by comparison with experimental data. From the investigation of the structural behavior, the vertical stiffener is required at the bottom of bone-beams to prevent the excessive local stress. Also, it is found that the normal stress of the flange and the shear stress of the web and flange are dominantly affected by the warping torsion and pure torsion, respectively.

  • In the design of curved girder bridges, the engineer is faced with a complex stress situatiorl. since these types of mutiple-I girder. mono-box girder and twin-box girder are subjected to both bending and torsional force. In general, the torsional forces consist of two part, St. venant's and warping. Thus the procedure for determining the induced stresses in a curved girder is difficult. The transfer matrix method is extensively used for the structural analysis because its merit in the theoretical background and applicability. The technique is attractive for implementation on a numerical solution by means of a computer program coded in Fortran language with a few elements. To demonstrate this fact. it gives good results which compare well with finite difference method. Therefore, in this paper, to clarify the range where the torsional warping stress can be approximated by pure torsional analyzed a critical value of relationships between the torsional stress ratio and torsional ratio.

Thermo-mechanical behavior of prestressed concrete box girder at hydration age

  • Excessively elevated temperature can lead to cracks in prestressed concrete (PC) continuous bridge with box girder on the pier top at cement hydration age. This paper presents a case study for evaluating the behavior of PC box girder during the early hydration age using a two-stage computational model, in the form of computer program ANSYS, namely, 3-D temperature evaluation and determination of mechanical response in PC box girders. A numerical model considering time-dependent wind speed and ambient temperature in ANSYS for tracing the thermal and mechanical response of box girder is developed. The predicted results were compared to show good agreement with the measured data from the PC box girder of the Zhaoshi Bridge in China. Then, based on the validated numerical model three parameters were incorporated to analyze the evolution of the temperature and stress within box girder caused by cement hydration heat. The results of case study indicate that the wind speed can change the degradation history of temperature and stress and reduce peak value of them. The initial casting temperature of concrete is the most significant parameter which controls cracking of PC box girder on pier top at cement hydration age. Increasing the curing temperature is detrimental to prevent cracking.

Incomplete fabrication effects on represtressing preflex girders encased in concrete

  • In the current study, ordinary design of Represstessed Pre-Flex (RPF) girder by classical beam theory and numerical model taking buckled shape into consideration were compared with field-survey data to find imperfections on the RPF girder before prestressing and after preflexion. It should be noted that the ordinary design do not consider deformed shape of steel girder in RPF beam. The deformed shapes of steel girder due to the incomplete fabrication that could be caused by self-weight, preflexion misalignment, existence of lateral bracing at mid-span and stiffness of reaction frame were found using a newly developed model which was verified against a deformation survey conducted on actual RPF girder in the field. The final observed deformed shapes of RPF after concrete shrinkage and before prestressing were classified into W, C and Unsymmetric shapes in regard to both survey and analytical results. The deformation survey showed negligible amount of unwanted deformation compared to the large size of the RPF girders. The shallower width of the bottom flange of steel girder caused amount of lateral torsional buckling under self-weight and preflexion thereby affecting the unwanted final overall shape of the RPF girders. However, it was found that the unwanted deformation of RPF girders by fabrication errors even though it is negligible compared to the size of the girder, caused unsymmetrical stress contours in concrete and additional tensile stress and raise some safety issues.

Stress Reducing Method in the Connection Area with Pier due to the Torsion of the Girder of Fish-bone Type Bridge (경골형 교량거더의 비틀림에 의한 말뚝연결부 응력저감기법)

  • A fish-bone type bridge is vulnerable to the torsional behavior due to the single girder system with planar zigzag conformation. The fixed connecting area between the girder and pier is the special weak point because the torsional load creates excessive stress concentration. Therefore, the method to reduce the stress concentration is required. In this study, the reduction efficiency of various reinforcing types to reduce the excessive stress occurring at the connecting area is evaluated by using numerical analyses.

  • As the results of comparison with several anchorage design methods of PSC box girder, stress superposition effect by the order of prestressing force can't be considered in the case of multi-anchorage design with existing design methods. In anchorage design by 3-D finite element analysis, estimation of stress concentration region and stress flow are correctly defined, but the estimation of sectional forces in anchorage is very complicated. In the case of anchorage design by strut-tie model method, the stress superposition effect can be considered and sectional forces in anchorage are easily calculated. Therefore, strut-tie model method is remarkably suitable to anchorage design if geometrical conditions of the truss members are carefully considered.
