  • This study attempts to explore the nature of science anxiety experienced by science-gifted middle school students based on Giorgi's phenomenological research method. Among the first-year middle school students selected by the University-affiliated Science Education Institute for the Gifted, six science-gifted students with high levels of science trait anxiety and science state anxiety experience were selected. Two interviews related to experience of science anxiety were conducted with participants. As a result of the analysis, science anxiety experienced by science-gifted students was caused by setting the ideal self-concept, lack of confidence, past experiences, difficulty in contents, and something valuable. Students complained of physical·physiological, cognitive, emotional·psychological discomfort when they felt science anxiety, and recognized it as an opportunity for growth. In addition, science-gifted students were shown to cope with various ways such as confronting uneasy situations directly or refining their minds to overcome various uncomfortable symptoms that arise when science anxiety is triggered. Some students thought that no special efforts were required to lower their level of anxiety because anxiety was relieved over time. The students had both negative and positive meanings for science anxiety. The results of this study will help teachers in-depth understanding of middle school science-gifted students who experience science anxiety and provide a theoretical basis for what kind of educational environment should be created and educational programs should be provided in relation to science anxiety.

  • A women's meaning about labor and delivery may influence the process of childbirth and performance of the maternal role. Therefore, negative meaning about the birth experience may have a negative impact on the childrearing. The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning of labor and delivery for the strategies of nursing intervention in positive childbirth experience. The data were collected through the in-depth interviews of 10 nursing college women on Jeju Island from October 2000 to January 2001. The interviews were conducted by investigator in the class room after school hours. Each interview lasted for about 30 minutes on average. Subjects were interviewed one at a time. The interviews were recorded with the consent of the subject. The data were analyzed by means of Giorgi's phenomenological analysis methods and catagorized according to the similarities of its contents. The investigator read the data repeatedly to identify the themes and the main meanings. Eight main meanings were identified as follows : 1)pain 2) shame and disgust 3)load 4)naturality 5)unreality 6)happiness 7)anxiety 8)maturity. Under these main meanings there were seventeen themes. • Purpose: Although more people from Middle Eastern countries are visiting South Korea for medical treatment, Korean nurses lack experience in treating them. Understanding and describing Korean nurses' experiences can help them provide quality care to these patients by enhancing their competency in culturally appropriate care. This study described the experiences of nurses who provide care to Middle Eastern patients in clinical settings in South Korea. Methods: We conducted a phenomenological study to describe nurses' experience of caring for patients from Middle Eastern countries. Ten nurses with prior experience in caring for these patients were recruited from a university-affiliated tertiary hospital. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted between May 1 and June 4, 2020. The transcribed data were analyzed using Giorgi's phenomenological method to identify the primary and minor categories representing nurses' experiences. Results: Four major categories (new experiences in caring for culturally diverse patients, challenges in caring for patients in a culturally appropriate manner, nursing journey of mutual agreement with culturally diverse patients, and being and becoming more culturally competent) and 11 subcategories were identified. Conclusion: Nurses experience various challenges when caring for Middle Eastern patients with diverse language and cultural needs. However, nurses strive to provide high-quality care using various approaches and experience positive emotions through this process. To provide quality care to these patients, hospital environments and educational programs must be developed that center on field nurses and students and support them in delivering quality care while utilizing their cultural capabilities.

  • The purpose of this research was to explore the phenomenon of object relations with musical instruments as experienced by professional Samulnori musicians. The researcher conducted in-depth individual interviews with five Samulnori players who also completed questionnaires with open-ended questions. The data were analyzed using Giorgi(2004)'s phenomenological methodology. The results offered 121 semantic units, seven subcategories, and three main categories. The three main categories were transitional object, object of expression and recognition of internal desires, and object for recognition of others and communication. These results suggest that the ensemble format of Samulnori promotes the development of the musician's object relationship and can externalize the player's internalized representational system and interaction method. This study is significant in that it reveals the endopsychic functional relationship between a musician and their instrument and provides the basis for the use of Samulnori instruments in music therapy.

  • This study is to examine how a person's sense is changing in the process of gambling addiction and recovery. For this purpose, the ten of gambling abstinences were purposefully selected for intensive depth interviews. The data collected by thess interviews were analysed by Giorgi's(1970; 1985) phenomenological method. Meaningful units were categorized into 18 'emerging themes', and integrated by the total of 6 'essential themes' considering the interrelations of the emerging themes. Major findings of the study are as follows. Firstly, participants of this study lost their general senses in the addiction process by focusing on specific senses such as seeing and hearing. Secondly, participants have begun to regain the lost senses in the process of recovery, even though going through the 'pains of withdrawal'. Thirdly, the participants' experiences of recovery could be summarized as 'a recovery process of the general senses lost by gambling'. Based upon these findings, some suggestions for helping practice were proposed such as 'provision of informations about senses', 'program development of sense stimulation', and 'application of sense recovery training'.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to understand the meaning of mind control as it is understood by elderly persons in Korea. Method: This study was conducted by engaging three elderly persons who are over the age of sixty five and presently residing in Seoul. Several in depth interviews were conducted with these individuals from March 2003 until November 2003. The contents of the interviews were analyzed using the Giorgi Method (1985), which places the emphasis on discovering meaning within the phenomenological context of an individual's experience. Results: The analysis of the contents revealed the following four components with regard to the meaning of mind control for elderly persons (1) Settling the mind (2) Gradual lowering of expectations and hope for the success of offspring, (3) Having good thoughts and acting accordingly, and (4) Making up one's mind to follow the 'natural flow of life'. Conclusion: By allowing a wider and deeper understanding of the meaning of mind control for elderly persons the results of this study provide a basis for improving the care of elderly with a holistic perspective.

  • Currently, the number of Long-Term Care Hospital in Korea is continuously increasing with the increase in the elderly population. Patients admitted to Long-Term Care Hospital are mainly elderly with chronic diseases, and because they are for long-term care, they often die in Long-Term Care Hospital, and the importance of end-of-life care is gradually increasing. In spite of these characteristics Studies on end-of-life care for nurses in Long-Term Care Hospital are mainly quantitative studies, and there is a limit to in-depth understanding of end-of-life care experiences. Therefore, The purpose of this study is to understand the meaning of Long-Term Care Hospital nurses' nursing experienceof end-of-life patients through a phenomenological method, and to describe and understand the meaning of the phenomenon in depth. The subjects of this study were 7 nurses who had worked for more than 6 months at a nursing hospital located in C city. The research method was in-depth interviews, and data were collected from December 2021 to March 2022. The interview date were analyzed by Giorgi's phenomenological method. As a result of the study, 'nurses' attitude toward end-of-life care', 'ambivalence toward life prolongation', 'reality of end-of-life care in Long-Term Care Hospital', and 'reflection on life and death' were found. Therefore, it is thought that End-of-life nursing Continuing educationand interventional education programs should be developed to change Long-Term Care Hospital nurses' end-of-life care attitudes and improve coping skills.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the single-person household's demand for a wearable healthcare system that provides the ischemic heart disease and cardiopulmonary alarm to be developed. In this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with six unmarried individuals in their thirties who were in the workplace and the results were interpreted by Giorgi's phenomenological analysis method. The study results indicated that although the wearable healthcare system was implemented with high-technology functions that serve the intended purpose, it is necessary to comprehensively consider factors such as aesthetics, comfort, and ease of washing. In this study, we found that the variables influencing the interviewees' intent to accept healthcare services are complex and cannot be attributed to one factor alone; this study has also shown a variety of interpersonal correlations. In addition, although health-care research focusing on the elderly has been conducted in the past, it is suggested that younger generations such as those in their thirties can also be studied as health care service adopters.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the parenting experiences of mothers of disabled children. The study focused on how mothers of disabled children prepared for their children's transition to elementary school and how they experienced their children's adjustment to school. Twenty mothers of children with developmental or intellectual disabilities participated in the study. Each mother had experienced an inclusive education program at an elementary school for more than a year. Twelve mothers have children with intellectual disabilities and eight have children with developmental disabilities. Individual in-depth interviews were carried out to collect qualitative data. To analyze the data, the research followed the phenomenological analysis method of Giorgi. The results showed that mothers of disabled children were actively involved with inclusive day care centers and therapy programs to prepare for children elementary school. Most wished to send their children to a general elementary school with an inclusive program, although decision making was not easy. When their children entered elementary school, some mothers observed their children's struggle with school and their peer relationships. They sought support from teachers and other mothers. These mothers showed a desire for their children's social independence. This study highlighted the necessity to develop support programs for disabled children and their mothers.
