  • We compared the structure of fish community and condition of major fish species in Lake Chungpyung and Lake Paldang, which are relatively shallow, meso-eutrophic, cascading dam reservoirs on the North Han River. Two lakes have wide littoral zone in the lakeside providing similarly good habitat for fishes, whereas fishery and water recreational activities such as motorboating, water skiing are allowed in Lake Chungpyung but are prohibited in Lake Paldang. The average lengths of large size fishes in Lake Chungpyung are shorter than those of same species in Lake Paldang, resulting in the slight distortion of generation distribution of those species in Lake Chungpyung, possibly owing to the active fishery such as fixed shore net fishing, gill net fishing and angling. Meanwhile the condition of fishes represented by the length-weight relationship of fish species did not show the significant differences between two lakes and showed normal condition. To evaluate the impact of physical disturbance such as loud noise and turbulent wave from water recreational activities to fishes precisely, further studies including physiological responses to stress an spawing activity should be needed.

  • This study revealed the reproductive biology of pointhead flounder Cleisthenes pinetorum, in the middle of the West Sea of Korea. We collected samples using gill net and drag net fisheries in coastal waters from January to December 2019. Mmonthly gonodosomatic index and maturity stage results showed that the spawning period was October to December, and the females grew faster than the males. The fecundity ranged from 16,728 to 1,039,616 number of eggs, and the relationship between TL and fecundity (F) was 0.0000003TL4.7434 (R2=0.4898). The size-frequency distribution of eggs suggested that C. pinetorum spawm once during a spawning period. The length at 50% maturity for females was estimated to be 18.9 cm.

  • The diet composition of Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus niphonius, was investigated using 853 specimens collected using two-boat trawl, stow net, gill net and set net from January to December 2019 from the South Sea of Korea. The size of the specimens ranged from 25.2 to 114.8 cm in fork length. S. niphonius fed mostly on fishes. Its diets also included small quantities of shrimps, cephalopods, crabs, stomatopods, etc. Among them, Engraulis japonicus was the dominant species. The dietary composition of S. niphonius exhibited significant differences based on their size. The proportion of Trichiurus japonicus increased as body size of S. niphonius increased, whereas the proportion of E. japonicus decreased gradually. As the body size of S. niphonius increased, the mean weight of prey per the stomach (mW/ST) tended to increase significantly (one-way ANOVA, P<0.05).

  • A new marine sponge, Antho (Acarnia) seogwipoensis n. sp., of the family Microcionidae, was collected from Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do, Korea, about 100 m in depth using a gill net on 1969. The genus Antho Gray, 1867 including Demospongiae, Poecilosclerida, Microcionidae, is a large group of sponges. About 100 species in Antho were reported from worldwide. The genus Antho contains five subgenera: Antho, Acarnia, Isopenectya, Jia, and Plocamia. Among them, about 30 species in Acarnia were described in world sponge. A new sponge's body shape is branching, size up to 124 mm wide, 213 mm high, 3-8 mm thick in branch and 7-9 mm thick in stalk. Antho (Acarnia) seogwipoensis n. sp. is similar to A. (A.) novizelanicum Ridley and Duncan, 1881 based on their spicules type and skeletal structure, but differs in the spicules dimension and growth form. This new species is branched growth form and have three kinds of toxa.

  • This is the first report of Fowlerichthys scriptissimus (Lophiiformes, Antennariidae) from Korea. A single specimen (291.0 mm SL) was collected off the coast of Jejudo Island by gill net on 28 March 2012 and identified with morphological and molecular approaches. The specimen is characterized by having all five pelvic fin rays bifurcate and possessing 20 vertebrae, 13 pectoral-fin rays, and a basidorsal ocellus on the side of the body. This species is distinguishable from other Korean taxa by the number of pectoral fin rays, the bifurcate form of the pelvic rays, and the vertebral count. We add this species to the Korean fish fauna and suggest new Korean names, "Byeol-ssin-beng-i-sok" and "Byeol-ssin-beng-i" for the genus and species, respectively.

  • Three specimens of Lutjanus ophuysenii (217.8-226.7 mm in standard length) were collected by a gill net at Korea between August 2015 and July 2016. This species has not previously been recorded from Korea. L. ophuysenii is very similar to Lutjanus vitta. But several morphological characteristics distinguish the two species, including the number of lateral line scales (46-49 scales in L. ophuysenii; 49-52 scales in L. vitta), a black spot in the middle part of the longitudinal stripe (present in L. ophuysenii; absent in L. vitta), and the absence of a scale on posterior end of the preopercle in L. ophuysenii (present in L. vitta). The Korean name proposed for L. ophuysenii is "Jeom-jul-tung-dom."

  • One specimen (181.0 cm; TL, total length) of Echinorhinus cookei was collected from Busan, Korea in 2014 using gill net. Echinorhinus cookei was characterized by having no anal fin, no spine at dorsal fin and numerous small dermal denticles at the placoid scale. This species is very similar to the congeneric species, E. brucus, but differed in the shape of placoid scale (star in E. cookei vs. round in E. brucus) and distribution of placoid scale (separated in E. cookei vs. slightly overlapped in E. brucus). We adopted the Korean name, Ga-si-bi-neul-sang-eo, for E. cookei, after Kim and Ryu (2017).

  • Seasonal variation of species composition in marine organisms around Oryukdo of Busan was investigated using a gill net between 2009 and 2011. A total of 82 species, 52 families, and 6 taxa were collected during the sampling periods. Species were included two species in Cnidaria, one in Urochordata, 12 in Mollusca, 12 in Crustacea, seven in Echinodermata, and 48 in Pisces. The dominant species were Crepidula onyx, Asterina pectinifera, Ceratostoma burnetti, Asterias amurensis, Anthocidaris crassispina, and Trachurus japonicus. These six species accounted for 48.4% in the total number. Diversity indices were highest in spring 2009 (2.77) and lowest in spring 2011 (1.66). Seasonal variation of species composition and abundance in marine organisms corresponded with the water temperature.

  • A squid gill-net fishing vessel Jayueoroho which was being insured ITC-Hulls and was laid up long period illegally under the condition of unmanned in the Pert of Kamcheon. On 30, March, 1993, the fishing vessel moved out toward the high sea by assistance of two tugboats, 12 miles southeast from Teajongdae, to discharge sewage. At that time the shipowner, the skipper, chief engineer and two labourers were boarding, and a fire was broken out by electric leakage at sea. For all their efforts of fire-fighting operation the fishing vessel foundered with explosion. In this case, she had been breached the warranties of legality, especially Korean maritime acts concerned, and the warranties of seaworthiness(MIA 39(5)) as attributable cause because of unmanned on board by wilful misconduct of the insured. Therefore it is prima facie evidence that the insurer is not liable for any loss attributable to the wilful misconduct and breach of warranties of the insured in MIA 1906.

  • This article analyzed the process of concluding the Korea-Russia IUU Fishing Prevention Agreement as a model case for distant water fisheries governance. The research studied co-operations for fisheries between Korea and Russia, the current status of live crabs landed in Korea through IUU fishing and Russia's political position on the IUU issue. Also this article reviewed a series of processes executed to achieve the bilateral agreement to prevent IUU fishing, including researches, intergovernmental negotiations, institutional improvements, public hearings and presentations. There were many things closely linked together such as international FAO-IUU prevention efforts, Russia's IUU fishing issue, Korean importers of Russian live crabs, their local governments and Korean snow-crab gill-net fishermen. These issues were resolved through reasonable reconciliations. This article wants to contribute to be used as a reference for other similar IUU fisheries cases.
