  • Horizontal forces may form a major part of the loading system for structures supported on pile groups. It is known that during a strong earthquake, the dynamic behavior of a group-pile foundation is related not only to the inertial force coming from the superstructures but also to the deformation of the surrounding ground. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the behaviors of the group-pile foundations and superstructures during major earthquakes. In this paper, numerical simulation of real-scale group-pile foundation subjected to horizontal cyclic loading is conducted by using a program named as DBLEAVES. In the analysis, nonlinear behaviors of ground and piles are described by cyclic mobility model and axial force dependent model (AFD model). The purpose of this paper is to prove availability of the analysis method by comparing numerical results and test results.

  • In this paper, a conceptual approach of the stress path method was newly proposed for a rational estimation of settlements of saturated clay deposits. In the proposed approach, settlement-related characteristic deformation behaviors of a specific clay deposit, which can cover all probable stress changes expected in the field, are experimentally evaluated in advance. Then settlements of various structures constructed on the deposit are easily estimated with only the characteristic deformation behaviors and without any additional experimental effort. In Part I of this paper, in order to provide practicality to the new conceptual approach, we developed a detailed procedure which is capable of evaluating characteristic deformation behaviors of a saturated clay deposit with only a limited number of tests and easily predicting deformations under a given stress change using the characteristic deformation behaviors. The applicability of the developed procedure was clearly shown by presenting an actual application example.

  • In this paper, free and force vibration behaviors of graphene-reinforced composite functionally graded (GRC-FG) cylindrical shells in thermal environments are investigated based on Reddy's third-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). The GRC-FG cylindrical shells are composed of piece-wise pattern graphene-reinforced layers which have different volume fraction. Based on the extended Halpin-Tsai micromechanical model, the effective material properties of the resulting nanocomposites are evaluated. Using the Hamilton's principle and the assumed mode method, the motion equation of the GRC-FG cylindrical shells is formulated. Using the time- and frequency-domain methods, free and force vibration properties of the GRC-FG cylindrical shell are analyzed. Numerical cases are provided to study the effects of distribution of graphene, shell radius-to-thickness ratio and temperature changes on the free and force vibration responses of GRC-FG cylindrical shells.

  • This paper deals with behaviors of Poisson's ratio with water content through uniaxial compressive strength against 307 individual rock cores, which are classified into sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rock. Poissons' ratio demonstrates independent behaviors and does not correlate with mechanical and physical parameter of rocks. The water content behavior of Poissson's ratio represents decrease, increase and random style. Rock samples with decreasing behavior demonstrate absolute preponderance above the 70% level. As Poisson' ratio shows independent behaviors, it should be considered based on experimental results of in-situ rock in the process of design, construction, and supervision.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the normalized behaviors of existing bridge foundations reinforced by micropiles. In order to do numerical method a finite element program was used to predict the micropile behavior and quantify their reinforcing effects on existing bridge foundations. In addition, the installation effects of battered micropiles on existing foundations were compared with vertically reinforced bridge foundations. Based on the study performed, it was found that the use of battered micropiles more efficiently reduces displacement of existing foundations than vertically installed micropiles under vertical and horizontal loadings, respectively. The batter angle of micropiles was also found to be most effective at about $15^{\circ}{\sim}20^{\circ}$ in reducing the vertical displacement. The horizontal reinforcing effect continues to be larger with an increase in batter angles. So, it is believed that the results presented could give an idea to enhance In-service performance of existing bridge foundations reinforced by micropiles.

  • 2 types of geogrids and geotextiles was used to evaluate shear behaviors after installation damage test. Shear behaviors were compared after installation damage test and coefficient of resistance to direct sliding($f_{ds}$) was estimated by theoretical shear analysis. Shear strength of damaged geogrid decreased under high normal stress of 150kPa and shear strength of geotextile decreased with increasing normal stress. It is seen that $f_{ds}$ values after installation damage decreased than before installation damage through comparison calculated $f_{ds}$ by direct theoretical shear analysis. $f_{ds}$ values to be calculated by theoretical shear analysis were changed with before and after installation damage.

  • The prediction of structural mechanical behaviors is vital important to early perceive the abnormal conditions and avoid the occurrence of disasters. Especially for underground engineering, complex geological conditions make the structure more prone to disasters. Aiming at solving the problems existing in previous studies, such as incomplete consideration factors and can only predict the continuous performance, the deep attention fused temporal convolution network (DATCN) is proposed in this paper to predict the spatial mechanical behaviors of structure, which integrates both the temporal effect and spatial effect and realize the cross-time prediction. The temporal convolution network (TCN) and self-attention mechanism are employed to learn the temporal correlation of each monitoring point and the spatial correlation among different points, respectively. Then, the predicted result obtained from DATCN is compared with that obtained from some classical baselines, including SVR, LR, MLP, and RNNs. Also, the parameters involved in DATCN are discussed to optimize the prediction ability. The prediction result demonstrates that the proposed DATCN model outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines. The prediction accuracy of DATCN model after 24 hours reaches 90 percent. Also, the performance in last 14 hours plays a domain role to predict the short-term behaviors of the structure. As a study case, the proposed model is applied in an underwater shield tunnel to predict the stress variation of concrete segments in space.

  • A new stress path test method, which is more suitable f3r evaluating settlements of clay deposits, was introduced. This new method is basically based on back pressure equalization concept and makes it possible to estimate deformations corresponding to all points on a specific stress path by only one test. As a result, deformation characteristics of a clay deposit can be predicted by a few tests and the more practical application of stress path method can be realized. In addition, anisotropic deformation behaviors following arbitrary stress paths also can be experimentally measured by this test method. Experimental applicability of the proposed method was confirmed by performing various stress path tests on remolded kaolinite samples and the actual process to evaluate overall deformation characteristics and settlements was also presented.

  • Targeting 9 types of rocks, which have high frequency of excavation, the researcher has analyzed decreasing behaviors of elastic modulus due to water content. The elastic modulus decreasing behaviors have been classified into 5 steps by uniaxial compressive strength. The results indicate that all of 5 sedimentary rocks and andesite show single decreasing behavior and granite, rhyolite, and gneiss demonstrate another decreasing behavior. Moreover, sensitivity of water content in granite, rhyolite, gneiss is almost twice as fast as that of the other rocks and their residual value of elastic modulus is very low.
