The GOCI imagery can be an effective alternative to monitor short-term changes over terrestrial environments. This study aimed to assess the radiometric characteristics of the GOCI multispectral imagery for land applications. As an initial approach, we compared GOCI at-sensor radiance with MODIS data obtained simultaneously. Dynamic range of GOCI radiance was larger than MODIS over land area. Further, the at-sensor radiance over various land surface targets were tested by vicarious calibration. Surface reflectance were directly measured in field using a portable spectrometer and indirectly derived from the atmospherically corrected MODIS product over relatively homogeneous sites of desert, tidal flat, bare soil, and fallow crop fields. The GOCI radiance values were then simulated by radiative transfer model (6S). In overall, simulated radiance were very similar to the actual radiance extracted from GOCI data. Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) calculated from the GOCI bands 5 and 8 shows very close relationship with MODIS NDVI. In this study, the GOCI imagery has shown appropriate radiometric quality to be used for various land applications. Further works are needed to derive surface reflectance over land area after atmospheric correction.
Sea ice currently covers approximately 7% of the world's ocean area, primarily concentrated in polar and high-altitude regions, subject to seasonal and annual variations. It is very important to analyze the area and type classification of sea ice through time series monitoring because sea ice is formed in various types on a large spatial scale, and oil and gas exploration and other marine activities are rapidly increasing. Currently, research on the type and area of sea ice is being conducted based on high-resolution satellite images and field measurement data, but there is a limit to sea ice monitoring by acquiring field measurement data. High-resolution optical satellite images can visually detect and identify types of sea ice in a wide range and can compensate for gaps in sea ice monitoring using Geostationary Ocean Color Imager-II (GOCI-II), an ocean satellite with short time resolution. This study tried to find out the possibility of utilizing sea ice monitoring by training a rule-based machine learning model based on learning data produced using high-resolution optical satellite images and performing detection on GOCI-II images. Learning materials were extracted from Liaodong Bay in the Bohai Sea from 2021 to 2022, and a Random Forest (RF) model using GOCI-II was constructed to compare qualitative and quantitative with sea ice areas obtained from existing normalized difference snow index (NDSI) based and high-resolution satellite images. Unlike NDSI index-based results, which underestimated the sea ice area, this study detected relatively detailed sea ice areas and confirmed that sea ice can be classified by type, enabling sea ice monitoring. If the accuracy of the detection model is improved through the construction of continuous learning materials and influencing factors on sea ice formation in the future, it is expected that it can be used in the field of sea ice monitoring in high-altitude ocean areas.

Conductive and radiative thermal model configurations of an imager of a geostationary satellite are presented. A two-plane method is introduced for three dimensional conductive coupling which is not able to be treated by thin shell plate thermal modeling technique. Especially the two-plane method is applied to massive matters and PIP(Payload Interface Plate) in the imager model. Some massive matters in the thermal model are modified by adequate correction factors or equivalent thickness in order to obtain the numerical results of thermal modeling to be consistent with the analytic model. More detailed nodal breakdown is specially employed to the object which has the rapid temperature gradient expected by a rule of thumb. This detailed thermal model of the imager is supposed to be used for analyses and test predictions, and be correlated with the thermal vacuum test results before final in-flight predictions.

The area of red tides occurences, which brings enormous damages every year, have been expanded to the coastal waters across the nation. Regarding to this trend, the development of red tide detection technology by using the GOCI (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) of COMS lauched in 2010 has been drawn attentions of researchers. This study purposed on analyzing the frequency and density of red tides occurence by using the GOCI for detecting the southern sea, whereas targeted area. The observation has brought over the last three years (2012, 2013, and 2014) before the analysis was conducted. Followingly, the study could be resulted in extracting and revealing the hot spots of the red tides from two of analysis in the overlay and density. The distribution patterns of red tide occurrences according to those observed years has been shown in irregular characteristics and various changes. However, the analysis of hot spots, based on the frequency of the red tide occurrence, has revealed that the frequency of red tide occurences is continuously increased in the specific sea area. Therefore, it is concluded in that the continuous monitoring can contribute to predict accurate movements of red tides, so as establish systematic plans for preventing disasters.

Geostationary Ocean Color Imager II (GOCI-II), which are now operated successfully since its launch in 2020, acquires local area images with 12 Level 1B slot images that are sequentially acquired in a 3×4 grid pattern. The boundary areas between the adjacent slots are prone to discontinuity in radiance, which becomes even more clear in the following Level 2 data, and this warrants the precise analysis and correction before the distribution. This study evaluates the relative radiometric biases between the adjacent slots images, by exploiting the overlapped areas across the images. Although it is ideal to derive the statistics from humongous images, this preliminary analysis uses just the scenes acquired at a specific time to understand its general behavior in terms of bias and variance in radiance. Level 1B images of February 21st, 2021 (UTC03 = noon in local time) were selected for the analysis based on the cloud cover, and the radiance statistics were calculated only with the ocean pixels. The results showed that the relative bias is 0~1% in all bands but Band 1 (380 nm), while Band 1 exhibited a larger bias (1~2%). Except for the Band 1 in slot pairs aligned North-South, biases in all direction and in all bands turned out to have biases in the opposite direction that the sun elevation would have caused.
Land cover (LC) is an important factor in socioeconomic and environmental studies. According to various studies, a number of LC maps, including global land cover (GLC) datasets, are made using polar orbit satellite data. Due to the insufficiencies of reference datasets in Northeast Asia, several LC maps display discrepancies in that region. In this paper, we performed a feasibility assessment of LC mapping using Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) data over Northeast Asia. To produce the LC map, the GOCI normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was used as an input dataset and a level-2 LC map of South Korea was used as a reference dataset to evaluate the LC map. In this paper, 7 LC types(urban, croplands, forest, grasslands, wetlands, barren, and water) were defined to reflect Northeast Asian LC. The LC map was produced via principal component analysis (PCA) with K-means clustering, and a sensitivity analysis was performed. The overall accuracy was calculated to be 77.94%. Furthermore, to assess the accuracy of the LC map not only in South Korea but also in Northeast Asia, 6 GLC datasets (IGBP, UMD, GLC2000, GlobCover2009, MCD12Q1, GlobeLand30) were used as comparison datasets. The accuracy scores for the 6 GLC datasets were calculated to be 59.41%, 56.82%, 60.97%, 51.71%, 70.24%, and 72.80%, respectively. Therefore, the first attempt to produce the LC map using geostationary satellite data is considered to be acceptable.
Aerosol Optical Properties (AOPs) are retrieved using the geostationary satellite instruments such as Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI), Meteorological Imager (MI), and Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) through Yonsei AErosol Retrieval algorithm (YAER). In this study, the retrieved aerosol optical depths (AOD)s from each instrument were intercompared and validated with the ground-based sunphotometer AErosol Robotic NETwork (AERONET) data. As a result, the four AOD products derived from different instruments showed consistent results over land and ocean. However, AODs from MI and GOCI tend to be overestimated due to cloud contamination. According to the comparison results with AERONET, the percentage within expected errors (EE) are 36.3, 48.4, 56.6, and 68.2% for MI, GOCI, AHI-minimum reflectivity method (MRM), and AHI-estimated surface reflectance from shortwave Infrared (ESR) product, respectively. Since MI AOD is retrieved from a single visible channel, and adopts only one aerosol type by season, EE is relatively lower than other products. On the other hand, the AHI ESR is more accurate than the minimum reflectance method as used by GOCI, MI, and AHI MRM method in May and June when the vegetation is relatively abundant. These results are explained by the RMSE and the EE for each AERONET site. The ESR method result show to be better than the other satellite product in terms of EE for 15 out of 22 sites used for validation, and they are better than the other product for 13 sites in terms of RMSE. In addition, the error in observation time in each product is found by using characteristics of geostationary satellites. The absolute median biases at 00 to 06 Universal Time Coordinated (UTC) are 0.05, 0.09, 0.18, 0.18, 0.14, 0.09, and 0.10. The absolute median bias by observation time has appeared in MI and the only 00 UTC appeared in GOCI.

The Communication Ocean and Meteorological Satellite(COMS), the first geostationary observation satellite, was successfully launched on June 27th in 2010. The raw data of Meteorological Imager(MI) and Geostationary Ocean Color Imager(GOCI), the main payloads of COMS, is delivered to end-users through the on-ground processing. The COMS Image Data Acquisition and Control System(IDACS) developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) in domestic technologies performs radiometric and geometric corrections to raw data and disseminates pre-processed image data and additional data to end-users through the satellite. Currently the IDACS is in the nominal operations phase after successful in-orbit testing and operates in National Meteorological Satellite Center, Korea Ocean Satellite Center, and Satellite Operations Center, During the in-orbit test period, validations on functionalities and performance IDACS were divided into 1) image data acquisition and transmission, 2) preprocessing of MI and GOCI raw data, and 3) end-user dissemination. This paper presents that IDACS' operational validation results performed during the in-orbit test period after COMS' launch.
An atmospheric correction algorithm based on the radiative transfer model is required to obtain remote-sensing reflectance (Rrs) from the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager-II (GOCI-II) observed at the top-of-atmosphere. This Rrs derived from the atmospheric correction is utilized to estimate various marine environmental parameters such as chlorophyll-a concentration, total suspended materials concentration, and absorption of dissolved organic matter. Therefore, an atmospheric correction is a fundamental algorithm as it significantly impacts the reliability of all other color products. However, in clear waters, for example, atmospheric path radiance exceeds more than ten times higher than the water-leaving radiance in the blue wavelengths. This implies atmospheric correction is a highly error-sensitive process with a 1% error in estimating atmospheric radiance in the atmospheric correction process can cause more than 10% errors. Therefore, the quality assessment of Rrs after the atmospheric correction is essential for ensuring reliable ocean environment analysis using ocean color satellite data. In this study, a Quality Assurance (QA) algorithm based on in-situ Rrs data, which has been archived into a database using Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) Bio-optical Archive and Storage System (SeaBASS), was applied and modified to consider the different spectral characteristics of GOCI-II. This method is officially employed in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)'s ocean color satellite data processing system. It provides quality analysis scores for Rrs ranging from 0 to 1 and classifies the water types into 23 categories. When the QA algorithm is applied to the initial phase of GOCI-II data with less calibration, it shows the highest frequency at a relatively low score of 0.625. However, when the algorithm is applied to the improved GOCI-II atmospheric correction results with updated calibrations, it shows the highest frequency at a higher score of 0.875 compared to the previous results. The water types analysis using the QA algorithm indicated that parts of the East Sea, South Sea, and the Northwest Pacific Ocean are primarily characterized as relatively clear case-I waters, while the coastal areas of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea are mainly classified as highly turbid case-II waters. We expect that the QA algorithm will support GOCI-II users in terms of not only statistically identifying Rrs resulted with significant errors but also more reliable calibration with quality assured data. The algorithm will be included in the level-2 flag data provided with GOCI-II atmospheric correction.
