  • In this study, fused Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) data were produced using AOD products from the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) onboard Communication, Oceanography and Meteorology Satellite (COMS)satellite and the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) onboard Himawari-8. Since the spatial resolution and the coordinate system between the satellite sensors are different, a preprocessing was first preceded. After that, using the level 1.5 AOD dataset of AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET), which is ground-based observation, correlations and trends between each satellite AOD and AERONET AOD were utilized to produce more accurate satellite AOD data than the originalsatellite AODs. The fused AOD were found to be more accurate than the originalsatellite AODs. Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and mean bias of the fused AODs were calculated to be 0.13 and 0.05, respectively. We also compared errors of the fused AODs against those of the original GOCI AOD (RMSE: 0.15, mean bias: 0.11) and the original AHI AOD (RMSE: 0.15, mean bias: 0.05). It was confirmed that the fused AODs have betterspatial coverage than the original AODsin areas where there are no observations due to the presence of cloud from a single satellite.

  • The objective of this study is to determine Tasseled Cap Transformation (TCT) coefficients for the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI). TCT is traditional method of analyzing the characteristics of the land area from multi spectral sensor data. TCT coefficients for a new sensor must be estimated individually because of different sensor characteristics of each sensor. Although the primary objective of the GOCI is for ocean color study, one half of the scene covers land area with typical land observing channels in Visible-Near InfraRed (VNIR). The GOCI has a unique capability to acquire eight scenes per day. This advantage of high temporal resolution can be utilized for detecting daily variation of land surface. The GOCI TCT offers a great potential for application in near-real time analysis and interpretation of land cover characteristics. TCT generally represents information of "Brightness", "Greenness" and "Wetness". However, in the case of the GOCI is not able to provide "Wetness" due to lack of ShortWave InfraRed (SWIR) band. To maximize the utilization of high temporal resolution, "Wetness" should be provided. In order to obtain "Wetness", the linear regression method was used to align the GOCI Principal Component Analysis (PCA) space with the MODIS TCT space. The GOCI TCT coefficients obtained by this method have different values according to observation time due to the characteristics of geostationary earth orbit. To examine these differences, the correlation between the GOCI TCT and the MODIS TCT were compared. As a result, while the GOCI TCT coefficients of "Brightness" and "Greenness" were selected at 4h, the GOCI TCT coefficient of "Wetness" was selected at 2h. To assess the adequacy of the resulting GOCI TCT coefficients, the GOCI TCT data were compared to the MODIS TCT image and several land parameters. The land cover classification of the GOCI TCT image was expressed more precisely than the MODIS TCT image. The distribution of land cover classification of the GOCI TCT space showed meaningful results. Also, "Brightness", "Greenness", and "Wetness" of the GOCI TCT data showed a relatively high correlation with Albedo ($R^2$ = 0.75), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) ($R^2$ = 0.97), and Normalized Difference Moisture Index (NDMI) ($R^2$ = 0.77), respectively. These results indicate the suitability of the GOCI TCT coefficients.

  • In this paper, HAPS operation scenario is proposed to minimize the interference from HAPS user terminal(HUT) to geostationary earth orbit(GEO) satellite receiver. The conventional scenario has been assumed for fully operated situation of HUT. However, all the HUTs could not be fully operated in a real system operation. Therefore, in order to reduce the interference to other systems, multibeam operation scenarios such as time division and adaptive time division methods are proposed and the interference effect of HUT to satellite receiver is evaluated according to various operation rate of HUT.

  • In this paper, the preliminary EMC analysis process between the Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) and the Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) launch vehicles in the frequency range is described. The considered launch vehicles are Arian Ⅴ, Sea Launch, Land Launch, Atlas III&Ⅴ, Delta IV, Proton M/breeze M, Soyuz, H II-Aa. The launch vehicle Radiated Susceptibility (RS) specifications have been compared to COMS satellite Radiated Emission (RE) limits. The COMS Radiated Emission (RE) level is determined by calculating the radiated field equal to the quadratic sum of radiated emissions of each equipment switched "ON" during launch. As a result, The RS requirements of Arian V, Atlas III&V and Delta IV lauchers are compliant with COMS RE limits. The negative margins appear between the others launch vehicle RS (Sea Launch, Land Launch, Proton M/Breeze M, Soyuz and H II-A) and COMS RE. Then, if the launchers that have negative margin were chosen by the customer, The EMC tests should be performed at satellite level in order to demonstrate the compatibility with respect to launch vehicles requirements.

  • The first geostationary satellite in Korea, COMS (Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite), has been operating properly since its successful completion of the IOT (In Orbit Test). COMS MI (Meteorological Imager) acquires Earth observation images from visible and infrared channels. This paper describes a method to compute the degradation of the COMS visible detectors and the result of the degradation during the two years of the operation. The visible channel detectors' performance was determined based on the comparison between the instrument-based measurements and ROLO model-based values. The degradation rate of the visible channel detectors of COMS MI showed a normal condition.

  • The efficiency tests of automatic positioning transmitter (APT) using satellite on life jacket were carried out to minimize casualties of fishermen and to make system optimization for effective SAR (Search and Rescue) operation. As the result of the tests, average position was equaled on the comparison between SPOT using low earth orbit satellite and DGPS (Differential Global Positining System), but standard deviation of DGPS for latitude and longitude were 66.4% and 46.3% smaller than those of SPOT. The position precision of SPOT was almost two times lower than LGT using geostationary satellite to compare 95% circular error probability. However, the success rate of receiver for SPOT was revealed as 86.5~94.1% on the experiments in the South Sea and the West Sea and it was 4.5 times higher than LGT. Therefore, SPOT is expected to contribute greatly to the rapid rescue of victim.

  • In this paper we discuss a direct satellite broadcasting system for vehicle. The proposed satellite-steering algorithm and controller based on it are designed for a communication and broadcasting system which uses the Mugungwha satellite. The Mugungwha satellite that the proposed system should steer is a geostationary orbit device. The satellite-steering algorithm computes azimuth and elevation with reference to a stationary point on earth. This is extended to a real satellite steering algorithm that considers position and attitude. Real moving position and attitude are represented by latitude, longitude, roll, pitch and yaw. To apply these five pieces of information to the reference satellite steering algorithm, we introduce Euler's degree coordinates that express independently the rotation of each axis relative to an axis. There are two ways a basic algorithm of the antenna of a vehicle can track and orient to satellite. One way is a feedback loop method for broadcasting gain, while the other is a feedback loop method for position and attitude of a vehicle. In the present paper, we design a controller of satellite broadcasting system for a vehicle using an algorithm that combines the two methods. We performed a simulation and experiment to prove effectiveness.
