There are numerous adjustment techniques that deal with the adjustment of geodetic networks but the least squares adjustment is the most common one. During the network adjustment procedure two techniques can be used, the free network adjustment technique and the constrained network adjustment technique. In order to determine the optimum technique for adjusting the geodetic networks, which used for the
geodynamical purposes, data from two different geodetic networks "Sinai geodetic network, Egypt, and HGN network, South Korea" had been examined. The used networks had a different configuration and located in different areas with different seismic activity. The results show that both techniques have a high accuracy and no remarkable differences in terms of RMS. On the contrary, the resulted coordinates
shows that the constrained network adjustment technique not only cause a remarkable distortion in the station final coordinates but also if the fixed points that define the datum parameters are changed different solutions for the coordinates will be determined. This distortion affect not only in the determination of point displacement but also in the estimation of the deformation parameters, which play a significant role in the geodynamical interpretation of results. Comparing the results which obtained from both techniques with the widely known geodynamical models of the area reviles that the free network adjustment technique results are clearly match with these models, while those obtained from the constrained technique didn’t match at all. By considering the results it seams to be that the free network adjustment technique is the optimum technique, which can be used for the geodetic network adjustment.
In this study, we developed reflection tomography inversion algorithm using Straight Ray Technique (SRT) which can calculate travel time easily and fast for complex geological structure. The inversion process begins by setting the initial velocity model as a constant velocity model that hat only impedance boundaries. The inversion process searches a layer-interface structure model that is able to explain the given data satisfactorily by inverting to minimize data misfit. For getting optimal solution, we used Gauss-Newton method that needed constructing the approximate Hessian matrix. We also applied the Marquart-Levenberg regularization method to this inversion process to prevent solution diverging. The ability of the method to resolve typical target structures was tested in a synthetic salt dome inversion. Using the inverted velocity model, we obtained the migration image close to that of the true velocity model.
Generally, a point source has been routinely used in the electrical resistivity measurements because of easy installation. If steel-cased wells are used as long electrodes, we can expect the better depth of investigation. However, the resistivity data with long electrodes can not be processed with a conventional inversion algorithm because a long electrode produces the different primary potential distribution compared with the point source. In this study, we proposed a new technique to process the electrical resistivity data with long electrodes by replacing the long electrode with a sequence of point electrodes. Comparing the potentials obtained from the technique with the analytic/numerical solution, we ensure that the proposed technique can be used for the numerical resistivity modeling based on the finite difference or finite element method.
Rupture directivity is the important parameter in estimating damage due to earthquakes. However, the traditional moment tensor inversion technique cannot resolve the real fault plane or the rupture directivity. To overcome these limitations, we have developed a new inversion algorithm to determine the moment tensor solution and the rupture directivity for moderate earthquakes, using the waveform inversion technique in the frequency domain. Numerical experiments for unilateral and bilateral rupture models with various rupture velocities confirm that the method can resolve the ambiguity of the fault planes and the rupture directivity successfully. To verify the feasibility of the technique, we tested the sensitivity to velocity models, which must be the most critical factor in practice. The results of the sensitivity tests show that the method can be applied even though the velocity model is not perfect. If this method is applied in regions where the velocity model is well verified, we can estimate the rupture directivity of a moderate earthquake. This method makes a significant contribution to understanding the characteristics of earthquakes in those regions.

In this study, we examined the applicability of a 3D electrical resistivity technique for the probing of underground cavities at a field test site in a karst area in Yongweol-ri, Muan-gun, in the south-western part of the Korean peninsula. At the test site, where the ground has subsided in the past, underground cavities are commonly found in the limestone bedrock, which is overlain with alluvial deposits. The limestone cavities at the test site are mostly filled with groundwater and clay; hence, they show levels of electrical resistivity that are significantly lower than those of the surrounding host bedrock. The results of this study demonstrate that the zones of low resistivity correspond to the zones of the cavities identified in the boreholes at the site, and that our 3D electrical resistivity survey is a very effective tool for detecting and mapping underground cavities in a karst area.
The validation of performance test for newly developed or old-used sensor is very important in the earthquake monitoring and seismology using earthquake data. Especially the frequency response of the sensor is mainly used to correct the earthquake data. The technique of the calculation of phase and amplitude with Hilbert transformation for earthquake data that is filtered with band limited frequency in time domain is applied to calculate the frequency response of the sensor. This technique was tested for the acceleration sensors, CMG-5T of 1g and 2g installed on the vibration table at the laboratory and we could obtain satisfactory result. Tohoku large earthquake in 2011 observed at the station SNU that has accelerometer, ES-T and seismometer, STS-2 operated by KIGAM was also used to test the field data applicability. We could successfully get the low frequency response of broad band sensor, STS-2. The technique by using band limited frequency filter and Hilbert transformation showed the superior frequency response to the frequency spectrum ratio method for noisy part in data.
Given that induced polarization (IP) and direct current (DC) resistivity surveys are similar in terms of data acquisition, most DC resistivity systems are equipped with a time-domain IP data acquisition function. In addition, the time-domain IP data include the DC resistivity values. As such, IP and DC resistivity data are intimately linked, and the inversion of IP data is a two-step process based on DC resistivity inversions. Nevertheless, IP surveys are rarely applied, in contrast to DC resistivity surveys, as proper inversion software is unavailable. In this study, through numerical modeling and inversion experiments, we analyze the problems with the conventional inverse mapping technique used to invert time-domain IP data. Furthermore, we propose a modified inverse mapping technique that can effectively suppress inversion artifacts. The performance of the technique is confirmed through inversions applied to synthetic IP data.
Characteristics of transfer responses for arrays like triangle, hexagon and semicircle were investigated. To characterize the site near Izmit city with ambient noise measurement, dispersion curves of surface waves were derived with using array technique like F-K, High resolution F-K, MSPAC and H/V ratio was calculated. Also, MASW was surveyed to get the high frequency part of dispersion curves. The transition from fundamental mode to first high mode of surface waves for dispersion curve was observed. Dispersion curve of fundamental mode of ambient noise and first higher mode of MASW was used in inversion to get S-wave velocity structure of subsurface. None-unique problem of results of surface wave inversion was solved with comparison of result of refraction tomography performed with first arrivals of MASW data.

In this paper, a supervised algorithm for the evaluation of geophysical sites using a multi-level cellular neural network (ML-CNN) is introduced, developed, and applied to real data. ML-CNN is a stochastic image processing technique based on template optimization using neighborhood relationships of the pixels. The separation/enhancement and border detection performance of the proposed method is evaluated by various interesting real applications. A genetic algorithm is used in the optimization of CNN templates. The first application is concerned with the separation of potential field data of the Dumluca chromite region, which is one of the rich reserves of Turkey; in this context, the classical approach to the gravity anomaly separation method is one of the main problems in geophysics. The other application is the border detection of archeological ruins of the Hittite Empire in Turkey. The Hittite civilization sites located at the Sivas-Altinyayla region of Turkey are among the most important archeological sites in history, one reason among others being that written documentation was first produced by this civilization.
In this paper, the incorporation of qualitative(or soft) data, such as outputs of geophysical tests or construction experience which has so far been cumulated, was discussed for rock classsification. Geostatistics wart used for this research since the parameters for the design of tunnels are spatially correlated. In particular, indicator kriging technique, which is one of non -parametric approaches, was used. As a selection criteria for an optimal classification, the cost of errors was adopted and the binary classes were only considered for rock classification. In future, incorporating an appreciable amount of available qualitative data will be necessary in tunnelling projects in which quantitative data are scarce. In this respect, this research is of great significance.
