  • Various geophysical methods and geological survey were applied for prospecting of geothermal resources and the attitude of volcanic body at northern part of Kumseongsan, Euiseong. They include magnetic, self-potential, radioactive and resistivity methods, temperature logging near the earth's surface and geological survey. The results of this study are summarized as follows. Various geophysical anomalies is related to the geologically Cretaceous conduit. Anomalies of resistivity and temperature logging seem to be related to the geological structure and terrestrial heat. Small radioactive and self-potential anomalies seem to be associated with chemical character of rocks. The sedimentary rocks dip steeply toward the volcanic rocks, aquifuge. Ideal geological structure for bearing ground water and geothermal resources was founded in the study area. The study area and the adjacent two hot springs area consist of Cretaceous sedimentary and volcanic rocks, and have similar geology.

  • This study provides an analysis on results of neutron logging for various borehole environments through numerical simulation based on a Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) code developed and maintained by Los Alamos National Laboratory. MCNP is suitable for the simulation of neutron logging since the algorithm can simulate transport of nuclear particles in three-dimensional geometry. Rather than simulating a specific tool of a particular service company between many commercial neutron tools, we have constructed a generic thermal neutron tool characterizing commercial tools. This study makes calibration chart of the neutron logging tool for materials (e.g., limestone, sandstone and dolomite) with various porosities. Further, we provides correction charts for the generic neutron logging tool to analyze responses of the tool under various borehole conditions by considering brine-filled borehole fluid and void water, and presence of borehole fluid.

  • KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) launched a new project to develop the low-temperature geothermal water in the area showing high geothermal anomaly, north of Pohang city, for large-scale space heating. Surface geologic and geophysical surveys including Landsat 1M image analysis, gravity, magnetic, Magnetotelluric (MT) and controlled-source audio-frequency MT (CSAMT), and self-potential (SP) methods have been conducted and the possible fracture zone was found that would serve as deeply connected geothermal water conduit. In 2004, two test wells of 1.1km and 1.5km depths have been drilled and various kinds of borehole survey including geophysical logging, pumping test, SP monitoring, core logging and sample analysis have followed. Temperature of geothermal water at the bottom of 1.5km borehole reached over $70^{\circ}C$ and the pumping test showed that the reservoir contained huge amount of geothermal water. Drilling for the production well of 2 km depth is on going. After test utilization and the feasibility study, geothermal water developed from the production well is going to be provided to nearby apartments.

  • In site investigation for tunnel designs, nowadays, geophysical exploration such as seismic exploration and electric resistivity exploration as well as drilling logging is frequently carried out. A method which can systematically make the utmost use of all available data obtained from investigation, therefore, is strongly required for the optimal evaluation of ground conditions in terms of rock mass class, etc. Many researchers have proposed using qualitative data to cope with the lack of quantitative data. In this study, an evaluation technique of rock mass classes in undrilled region was proposed based upon multiple indicator kriging method which is a geostatistical technique. It was shown that two types of data with different degree of uncertainty, for example, drilling logging data and geophysical exploration data, could be simultaneously utilized in evaluating rock mass classes for a real tunnel design.

  • The Gas Hydrate Research and Development Organization (KGHDO) of Korea accomplished successfully geophysical logging (LWD: Logging While Drilling, MWD: Measurement While Drilling) for five sites in 2007, in order to investigate the presence of gas hydrate in the Ulleung Basin, the East Sea of Korea. The togging parameters acquired from LWD/MWD dre electrical resistivity, acoustic velocity, neutron density and porosity, and natural gamma. In addition, pressure, temperature, and diameter of borehole were measured. LWD/MWD data showed several evidences indicating the presence of gas hydrate. Based on LWD/MWD data, three coring sites were selected for sampling of gas hydrate. Subsequently, various gas hydrate samples were collected directly from three sites. Therefore. the presence of gas hydrates was verified by coring. LWD/MWD data will be significantly used to estimate the amount of gas hydrate. Also, they will provide important information to elucidate about sedimentologic characteristics of gas-hydrate bearing formation and sedimentary environment of the Ulleung Basin.

  • This study presents a practical procedure for the Bayesian inversion of geophysical data by Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling and geostatistics. We have applied geostatistical techniques for the acquisition of prior model information, and then the MCMC method was adopted to infer the characteristics of the marginal distributions of model parameters. For the Bayesian inversion of dipole-dipole array resistivity data, we have used the indicator kriging and simulation techniques to generate cumulative density functions from Schlumberger array resistivity data and well logging data, and obtained prior information by cokriging and simulations from covariogram models. The indicator approach makes it possible to incorporate non-parametric information into the probabilistic density function. We have also adopted the MCMC approach, based on Gibbs sampling, to examine the characteristics of a posteriori probability density function and the marginal distribution of each parameter. This approach provides an effective way to treat Bayesian inversion of geophysical data and reduce the non-uniqueness by incorporating various prior information.

  • We practiced fresh water injection test to identify its applibility as a method of seawater intrusion mitigation technique, and monitored the change of borehole fluid conductivity and the behavior of injected fresh water using borehole multichannel electrical conductivity monitoring and well-logging, and DC resistivity and SP monitoring at the surface. Well-logging and multichannel EC monitoring showed the decrease of fluid conductivity due to fresh water injection. We note that such an injection effect lasts more than several month which means the applibility of fresh water injection as a seawater intrusion control technique. Although SP monitoring did not show meaningful results because of weather condition during monitoring and the defects of electrodes due to long operation time, DC resistivity monitoring showed its effectiveness and applicability as a monitoring and assessment techniques of injection test by means of imaging the behavior and the front of fresh water body in terms of the increase of resistivity with reasonable resolution. In conclusion, we note that geophysical techniques can be an effective method of monitoring and evaluation of fresh water injection test, and expect that fresh water injection may be an practical method for the mitigation of seawater intrusion when applied with optimal design of injection well distribution and injection rate based on geophysical evaluation.

  • Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logging has been considered one of the most complicated nevertheless, one of the most powerful logging methods for the characterization on of both rocks and natural fluids in formation. NMR measures magnetized signals (polarization and relaxation) between the properties of hydrogen nucleus called magnetic moment and applied magnetic fields. The measured data set contains two important petrophysical properties such as density of hydrogen in the fluids inside the pore space and the distinct decay rate for fluid type. Therefore, after the proper data processing, key petrophysical information, not only the quantities and properties of fluids but also supplies of rock characterization in a porous medium, could be archived. Thus, based on this information, several ongoing researches are being developed in estimating aspects of reservoir productivity information, permeability and wettability since it is the key to having correct interpretation. This study goes through the basic theory of NMR at first, and then reviews NMR logging tools as well as their technical characteristics. This paper also briefly discusses the basic knowledge of NMR simulation algorithm by using Random walk.

  • In geophysics and geophysical exploration fields, we can use information about inclination and azimuth in various ways. These include borehole deviation logging for inversion process, real-time data acquisition system, geophysical monitoring system, and so on. This type of information is also necessarily used in the directional drilling of shale gas fields. We thus need to develop a subminiature, low-powered, multi-functional inclination and azimuth measurement system for geophysical exploration fields. In this paper, to develop real-time measurement system, we adopt the high performance low power Micro Control Unit (made with state-of-the-art Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor technology) and newly released Micro Electro Mechanical Systems Attitude Heading Reference System sensors. We present test results on the development of a multifunctional real-time inclination and azimuth measurement system. The developed system has an ultra-slim body so as to be installed in 42mm sonde. Also, this system allows us to acquire data in real-time and to easily expand its application by synchronizing with a depth encoder or Differential Global Positioning System.
