  • The distribution of exotic weeds in 4 island area such as Baengnyeong-do, Heuksan-do, Chuja-do, and Geomun-do in Korea was investigated. Baengnyeong-do, Heuksan-do, Chuja-do, and Geomun-do have different weed flora, 41 species included 13 families, 32 species included 11 families, 23 species included 9 families and 30 species included 12 families were observed in the 4 islands, respectively. 18 families 70 species were occurred in 4 island. Most troublesome exotic weeds were Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior, Solanum carolinense, Cuscuta pentagona. Occurrence frequency of Conyza canadensis, Erigeron annuus, Dactylis glomerata, Bromus catharticus and Lolium multiflorum were the highest in each island, respectively. Also, result of divided life cycle, annual weeds were 28 species occupied 40% in total, biennial weeds were 21 species (30%) and perennial weeds were 21 species (30%).

  • The feeding habits of Hoplobrotula armata were studied using 269 specimens collected in the coastal waters of Geomun-do, Korea. The size of the specimens ranged from 5.6-56.8 cm in total length (TL). H. armata is a canivore that consumes mainly teleosts and decapods (shrimp, crabs and hermit crabs). Its diet also includes gammarid amphipods, cephalopods, polychaetes and copepods. Smaller individuals (<20 cm TL) fed mainly on fish, shrimp and crabs. The proportion of shrimp and crabs decreased as body size increased, whereas the consumption of fish gradually increased. Fish accounted for almost the entire stomach contents of individuals (larger than 40 cm TL).

  • This paper aims to examine the local changes in which the introduction of new fishery technology in small remote island, Geomun-Do, had resulted. The main findings are as follows. With the help of introduction of new fishery technology, local fishery industry transformed self-sufficient one into commercial one. This led to increase in the productivity of fishery industry and, subsequently, the emergence of new social system and processing facilities. The growth of fisheries, which led the opening of fishing market and the development of processing industry, made it change local industrial structure. This paper focused particularly on local cultural transformation revealed in the process of the introduction of new fishery technology. In conclusion, the paper argues that the pace of cultural transformation can be selectively appeared by the qualitative characteristics of locality and social group, when new cultural elements are introduced and adapted to a certain locality.

  • The feeding habits of black scraper, Thamnaconus modestus, were studied using 172 specimens collected in the coastal waters of Geomun-do, Korea. The size of the specimens ranged from 16.2 to 39.1 cm in standard length (SL). T. modestus was a omnivore that consumes mainly benthos. Of the benthos species nephtheidae was the most preferred prey. Its diet also includes, algae, thoracica, gastropoda, desmospongia. Small and medium size individuals (<21~33 cm, SL) fed mainly on nephtheidae and algae. Larger individuals (>33 cm, SL) fed mainly on thoracica. The proportion of nephtheidae decreased as body size increased (>33 cm, SL), whereas the consumption of thoracica gradually increased.

The proportion of cephalopods decreased as body size increased, whereas the consumption of fishes gradually increased. Fishes accounted for almost stomach contents of larger individuals (more than 15 cm SL).

  • This paper analyzes the sea state and characteristics during the August 2011 passage of Typhoon Muifa based on data measured at four ocean weather/wave observation stations (buoys) located on the southwestern coast of Korea. When the typhoon arrived in the area approximately 230 km west of Mokpo at 9 PM on August 7, the decrease in air pressure led to increases in sea level of 25.64 cm at the Chilbal-do buoy, 16.43 cm at the Geomun-do buoy, and 9.60 cm at the Geoje-do buoy. The maximum wave height increased at the Geomun-do buoy about seven times faster than at the Chilbal-do buoy. The low water temperature at Chilbaldo during the typhoon passage probably reduced the wave energy. In the face of the oncoming typhoon, the southwest direction of the wind and waves may have been the result of external forces transporting seawater (energy) from the open sea toward the coast. The weather and ocean data from the Mara-do buoy were negatively correlated with those of Chilbal-do, whereas the data from Geomun-do had a positive correlation with those of Geoje-do.

  • In this study, deepwater design waves were estimated for 16 wave directions and various return periods based on statistical analysis of extreme waves observed for more than 20 years at three stations (Chilbal-do, Geomun-do, Donghae). These values were compared with design waves estimated based on the omni-directional wave data. The Weibull distribution was used as the probability distribution function whose parameters were determined by the least square method. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was applied for the goodness of fit test. Notably, the directional design waves were smaller than the omni-directional design wave for every wave direction. The maximum 50-year wave heights for directional sectors were 7.46 m (NNE), 12.05 m (S), and 9,59 m (SSW) at Chilbal-do, Geomun-do and Donghae whereas those for uni-directional wave data were 7.91 m, 13.82 m and 10.38 m, respectively. This implied possible under-estimation of the deepwater design waves for 16 wave directions being currently used in the design of offshore and coastal structures.

  • It has been, in general, known that the catching efficiency of a trammel net is better than that of a gill net because of the variability of catch species and size. In this stidy, A fishing gear test was carried out to analyze the catching efficiency of the gill net and the trammel net on the coast of Geomun-do of southern Korean waters and fish school aggregation was also investigated using a underwater video camera. CPUE of the gill net was 49.2% higher than the trammel net but fish species was 34.5% lower where there was no difference on the significance level of 5% by ANOVA test. Main catch species caught by the gill net were red seabream(Pagrus major) and triggerfish(Aluterus monoceros), skate ray(Raja Kenojei) and red seabream for the trammel net, and the average body length of red seabream was shorter than the trammel net. It was thought that the reason of higher catch in the gill net than the trammel net was a fish school which can be caught easily by gill net and the size of population was suitable for the gill net.

  • A pre-feasibility test is done for renewable energy hybrid power systems at off~grid islands in which the current power supply is provided only by diesel generation. We apply Homer (Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewables) which was developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for the analysis to identify the cost-minimizing combination of power generating facilities for the given load profiles. Chuja-Do, Geomun-Do and Youngsan-Do have been selected for our analysis considering the wind resources data of the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER). Information on wind speed, solar radiation and temperature is also used for the analysis. System component cost information from overseas market has been used due to the lack of domestic information. Site specific Load profile for electricity demand for those islands are reconstructed based on the partial survey results obtained form other sources. The LCOE of the least cost hybrid power systems for Chuja-Do, Geomun-Do and Youngsan-Do are $0.278/kWh, $0.234/kWh and $0.353/kWh, respectively Considering the fact that diesel generation is being subsidized at the price of $0.300/kWh by the government, first 2 cases are economically feasible for the introduction of renewable energy hybrid systems to those islands. But the third case of Youngsan-Do does not meet the criteria. The basic differences of these pre-feasibility test results are from the differences of the site specific renewable energy conditions, especially wind resources. In summary, promoting hybrid systems in the off-grid remote island should be based on the economic feasibility test results. Not all the off-grid islands are feasible for introducing this renewable energy hybrid system.
