Effect of geometry on shrinkage of cryostats for HTS cables

  • One of the main problems faced in developing India's first HTS power cable was that of shrinkage in length of the double-walled vacuum-insulated cryostat. The shrinkage was due to the evacuation of the annular vacuum space which results in a shorter working cable length. This work reports experimentally observed contraction during evacuation and analyses corrugated pipes/bellows which house the cable core of HTS cables. The effect of corrugation geometry including length, corrugation pitch and depth, diameters of corrugated pipes and thicknesses of pipes is studied numerically to realize the degree of shrinkage due to vacuum as well as chill down. Finally, necessary length compensation and associated cost is determined to tackle the shrinkage issue.

  • Effect of reentrant type bowl geometry on combustion characteristics was investigated in a D.1.diesel engine. The main factor was the aspect ratio (Bowl Diameter/Bowl Depth) of bowl of combustion chamber, and the measured data include the cylinder pressure, engine performance and emissions of the engine using the 4 kinds of the combustion chamber. Experimental results indicate that the effect of dc/H and nozzle protrusion are relatively small and there exists an optimum dc/H according to the combustion conditions. It is also found that the smoke emission is quite sensitive the overall combustion time where the 90 percentage of the combustion heat is released. The smoke mission increases by shortening the 90% combustion time while it decreases by delaying the 90% combustion time.

  • This paper represents the effect of rotor geometry on the performance of a small-scale Wells turbine for wave energy conversion. In this study, four kinds of blade profile were selected from previous studies with regard to the blade profile of the Wells turbine. The experimental investigations have been performed for two solidities by model testing under steady flow conditions, and then the effect of blade profile on the running and starting characteristics under sinusoidal flow conditions have been investigated by a numerical simulation using a quasi-steady analysis. In addition, the effect of sweep on the turbine characteristics has been investigated for the cases of CA9 and HSIM 15-262123-1576. As a result, a suitable choice of these design factors has been suggested.

Stress concentration factors in tubular T-joints stiffened with external ring under axial load

  • In this study, the SCFs in tubular T-joints stiffened with external ring under axial load are studied and discussed. After verification of the present numerical model with the results of several available experimental tests, 156 FE models were generated and analyzed to parametrically evaluate the effect of the joint geometry and the ring geometry on the SCFs. Results indicated that the SCF of the stiffened T-joints at crown point can be down to 24% of the SCF of the corresponding un-reinforced joint at the same point. Also, the effect of the ring on the SCF at saddle point is more remarkable than the effect of the ring on the SCF at crown point. Moreover, against un-reinforced joints under axial load, the SCF at saddle point of the stiffened joint is smaller than the SCF at crown point of that stiffened joint. The ring results in the redistribution of stresses in the ring and metal substrate. Also, the effect of the ring thickness on the decrease of the SCFs is slight and can be ignored. In final step, the geometric parameters affecting the SCFs of the stiffened T-joints are analyzed by multiple nonlinear regression analyses. An accurate formula is proposed for determining the SCFs.

이종 접합재의 굽힘 및 인장강도에 미치는 시험편 형상의 효과 (Effect of Specimen Geometry on Bending and Tensile Strength of Material Used in Dissimilar Joints)

  • 이종 접합재($\beta-Si_3N_4/S45C$)의 굽힘강도와 인장강도에 미치는 시험편 형상의 영향을 정량적으로 평가하였다. 평균 굽힘강도와 평균 인장강도는 원형단면 시험편이 4각형 단면 시험편보다 약간 높았다. 또한, 초음파(AE)를 이용하여 균열발생응력을 성공적으로 측정할 수 있었으며, 균열발생응력은 굽힘강도의 60~80% 이었다. 아울러, 세라믹측 접합계면 근처의 잔류응력 측정을 굽힘강도 시험전에 X선 회절법에 의해 실시하였으며, 굽힘강도와 균열발생응력은 잔류응력 증가와 더불어 감소하였다. 마지막으로 인장시험에서 굽힘변형률 성분의 영향을 평가하였으며, 인장강도는 굽힘변형률 성분의 증가와 더불어 감소하고 굽힘강도의 약 80%에 해당되었다.
