  • This study presents the effects of geometrical dimensions of concrete gravity dams on the seismic response considering different base width/dam height (L/H) ratios. In the study, a concrete gravity dam with the height of 200 m is selected and finite element models of the dam are constituted including five different L/H ratios such as 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.00, 1.25. All dams are modeled in ANSYS software considering dam-reservoir-foundation interaction. 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake records are applied to models in upstream-downstream direction and linear time history analyses are performed. Dynamic equilibrium equations of motions obtained from the finite element models of the coupled systems are solved by using Newmark time integration algorithm. The seismic response of the models is evaluated from analyses presenting natural frequencies, mode shapes, displacements and principal stresses. The results show that the L/H ratios considerably affect the seismic response of gravity dams. Also, the model where L/H ratio is 1.00 has more desirable results and most appropriate representation of the seismic response of gravity dams.

  • For the Mo-tip field emitter array, the method by which the geometrical structure of the gate insulator wall could be modified in order to improve field emission properties(turn-on voltage and gate leakage current). The device having a gate insulator of complex shape, which means the combined geometrical structure with round shape made by wet etching and vertical shape made by dry etching processes, was fabricated and the field emission properties of the three kinds of devices were compared. As a result, the electric field applied to tip apex could be increased and gate leakage current could be decreased by employing the gate insulator having geometrical wall structure of mixed shape. Finally, the obtained empirical results were analyzed by simulation of electric field distribution at/near the tip apex and gate insulator using SNU-FEAT simulator.

  • A single-layerd steel lattice roof, which has 50m span, was constructed. In order to figure out the realistic buckling load level, the structural analysis of this roof structure was performed especially by local snow load. Due to the characteristics of application of snow load, the load combinations of snow should be considered not only global area but also local part so that the critical buckling load could be observed as easy as possible. Geometrical imperfection was simulated to consider inaccurate shape of structure. And then nonlinear analysis were performed. Finally, this paper could investigate that the local snow load with geometrical imperfection decreased the level of buckling load significantly.

  • This paper proposes a matching algorithm using Voronoi diagram for rotation and translation invariant fingerprint identification. The proposed algorithm extracts geometrical structures that are derived from Voronoi diagram of a fingerprint image. Then two features, distances and angles are extracted from the geometrical structures and saved as indexing form for fingerprint matching. This matching algerian has a lower error rate than indexing based methods of old times.

  • This paper proposes methods to extract face elements and facial characteristics points for face recognition. We select a candidate region of the face elements with geometrical information between them inside the extracted face region with skin color and extract them using their inherent features. The facial characteristics to be applied to face recognition is expressed with geometrical relation such as distance and angle between the extracted face elements. Experiment results shows good performance to extract of face elements.

  • The major threat of geometric manipulations is that they change the positions of watermarks, therefore the detection process fails to extract watermark properly. Since they cause the same effects on the host image as watermarks simultaneously, evaluating the distorted host image can be helpful to measure the nature of distortions. In this paper, we propose a geometrical distortion-resilient watermarking algorithm based on this property. Firstly we evaluate the orientation of a host image by filtering it with directional Gabor kernels, then we insert embedding pattern aligned to the estimated orientation. In its detection step, we evaluate the orientation again by Gabor filtering, then simply project and average the projected value to obtain a 1-D projection average pattern. Finally, auto-correlation function of the 1-D projection average pattern identifies periodic peaks. Analysed are experimental results against geometrical attacks including aspect ratio changes.

  • An adequate method for the prediction of machining errors is essential to improve productivity and product quality. But it is known that there is a remarkable difference between values calculated by conventional roughness model and measured values of actual machined surfaces under high efficient cutting condition. This paper introduces the theoretical analysis of characteristic lines of cut remainder to evaluate a geometrical surface roughness accurately. In this study, analytic equations of the characteristic lines are derived from the surface generation mechanism of ball end milling considering the actual trochoidal trajectories of cutting edges. The predicted results are compared with the results of conventional roughness model.

  • Understanding the contact between wheel and rail is a starting point in railway vehicle dynamic research area and especially analysis for the contact geometry between wheel and rail is important. On the one hand, the critical speed as the natural characteristics of rolling-stock is generally tested on the roller rig. The geometrical characteristics of the wheel/roller contact on the roller rig are different from these of the general wheel/rail contact because the longitudinal radius of roller is not infinite compared with rail. Thus, in this paper we developed the algorithm to analyze the wheel/roller contact geometry of our roller rig which is constructed now and analyzed the difference between whee/roller contact and wheel/rail contact. In conclusion, we found that the yaw motion of wheelset and the roller radius influence the geometrical contact parameters in wheel flange contact area.

  • This study investigated young children's spatial representation of geometrical relations based on their drawings of cube buildings. One hundred seventy-six children from 3 to 6 years of ages were selected from private kindergartens and day care centers. Their drawings were classified into 6 developmental levels: level 1 - drawings show only scribbles or several circles; level 2 - drawings show plane squares from a front view; level 3 - positional relations are included in the drawings; level 4 - separate-joint relations or the general outline of a cube building are shown; level 5 - rotated drawing and an additional square for hidden faces are attempted to represent the lateral view; level 6 - parallel lines are drawn to represent 3-dimensional structures. Three-to four-year-olds were between levels 1 and 2; four-to six-year olds were between levels 3 and 4; and children over six years old were between levels 3 and 5.

  • We suggest a 3D vision inspection algorithm which is based on the external shape feature. Because many electronic parts have the regular shape, if we have the database of pattern and can recognize the object using the database of the object s pattern, we can inspect many types of electronic parts. Our proposed algorithm uses the geometrical pattern matching method and 3D database on the electronic parts. We applied our suggested algorithm fer inspecting several objects including typical IC and capacitor. Through the experiments, we could find that our suggested algorithm is more effective and more robust to the inspection environment(rotation angle, light source, etc.) than conventional 2D inspection methods. We also compared our suggested algorithm with the feature space trajectory method.
