Based on third-order shear deformation shell theory, the present paper investigates post-buckling properties of eccentrically stiffened metal foam curved shells/panels having initial geometric imperfectness. Metal foam is considered as porous material with uniform and non-uniform models. The single-curve porous shell is subjected to in-plane compressive loads leading to post-critical stability in nonlinear regime. Via an analytical trend and employing Airy stress function, the nonlinear governing equations have been solved for calculating the post-buckling loads of stiffened geometrically imperfect metal foam curved shell. New findings display the emphasis of porosity distributions, geometrical imperfectness, foundation factors, stiffeners and geometrical parameters on post-buckling properties of porous curved shells/panels.
Buckling and post-buckling of cold-formed steel members are rather difficult to predict due to material and geometrical non-linearity. However, numerical techniques have reached a level of maturity such that many are now successfully undertaking ultimate strength analysis of cold-formed steel members. In numerical non-linear analysis, both geometrical and material imperfections, have to be estimated and properly used. They must be codified in terms of shape and magnitude. The presented paper represents a state-of-art report, including relevant results obtained by the authors and collected from literature, on that problem.

The research presents an application of Balanced ANOVA (BANOVA) by utilizing randomized orders for various Split-Plot Designs (SPDs) which include two cell designs, split-plot with one-way HTC (Hard to Control) factor, split-plot with two-way HTC factor, split-split-plot design and nested design. In addition, four MINITAB examples of 2-level split-plot designs based on the number of blocks and the type of whole-plots are presented for practitioners to obtain comprehensive understanding. Furthermore, the geometrical interrelated properties among three typical Designs of Experiments (DOE), such as Factorial Design (FD), Response Surface Design (RSD), and Mixture Design (MD) are discussed in this paper.

This paper presents effects of impeller geometrical parameters on the performance of a centrifugal pump impeller. The effects of meridional parameters and vane plane development parameters on the performance of the impeller were numerically studied using a commercial CFD code and DOE(design of experiments) software. Geometrical parameters in a method of meridional view and vane plane development were selected and defined to generate the 3D impeller shape. The response variables are defined in a total head and efficiency curve with flow rate. The influences of selected design variables on the various objective functions were examined as a result of the calculation using 2k factorial.

A nonlinear anile element formulation of flat shell elements with drilling d.o.f, is presented for the geometrical nonlinear analysis of thin-walled structures. The shell element to be applied in finite element analysis was developed by combining a membrane element named as CLM with drilling rotation d.o.f, and plate bending element. The combined shell element possesses six degrees of freedom per node. The element showed the excellent performance in the linear analysis of the folded plate structures, in which the normal rotational rigidity of folded plates is considered, therefore, using this element geometrical nonlinear analysis of those structures is fulfilled in this study. An incremental total Larangian approach is adopted through out in which displacements are referred to the original configuration. Comparing the results with those of other researches shows the performance of this element and a folded plate structure is analyzed as an example.
In this numerical approach, strut-placed supersonic annular flow is examined. The geometrical variations of strut cause strong influence on flowfield structures. The geometrical variations are as follows, swept effect, attack angle effect, variation of leading edge shape. These changed features such as velocity structure, pressure structure, shock-boundary layer interaction are compared and analyzed according to each geometrical configuration.

In this study, geometrical similarity conditions for drills of various diameters are discussed. The effect of geometrical similarity on the chip shape and forces of different sized conventional drills has been experimentally confirmed. Drilling tests are carried out for SM45C by using the conventional HSS drills. The torque and thrust forces are measured and compared with those chip forms. Chip shape in drilling are affected by three factors being flow angle, side and up curl of the chip. It is found that the feedrate and drill diameter are more affected than cutting speed on the chip form and cutting forces. The similarity conditions gives easily to estimate the chip shape, the thrust and the torque for drills of different diameters.
This paper proposes a new part family classification system (IPFACS: Image Processing and Fuzzy ART based Clustering System), which incorporates image processing techniques and a modified fuzzy ART neural network algorithm. IPFACS can classify parts based on geometrical shape and manufacturing attributes, simultaneously. With a proper reduction and normalization of an image data through the image processing methods and adding method in the modified Fuzzy ART, different types of geometrical shape data and manufacturing attribute data can be simultaneously classified in the same system. IPFACS has been tested for an example set of hypothetical parts. The results show that IPFACS provides a good feasible approach to form families based on both geometrical shape and manufacturing attributes.
Preservation of geometrical context of terrains in a digitized format is useful in handling and making modification to the data. Digitization of three-dimensional terrain still proves a great challenge due to heavy load of context required to retain details of topological and geometrical information. Methods of simplification, restoration and multi-level terrain generation are often employed to transform the original data into a compressed digital format. However, reduction of the stored data size comes at an expense of loss of details in the original data set. This article reports on an alternative scheme for simplification and restoration of terrain data. The algorithm utilizes the fact that the terrain formation and patterns can be predicted and modeled through the fractal algorithm. This method was used to generate multi-level terrain model based on NGIS digital maps with preserving geometrical context of terrains.
Recently it is attempted to manufacture gears by various cold forging methods to meet requirements of mass production and uniform qualities. Compared to machined gears cold forged ears reveal higher tooth strength and better surface roughness but they reveal lower geometrical accuracies. Therefore in the present study a series of experiments are performed to investigate relations between geometrical accuracies of dies and billet and those of the final product. The geometrical accuracies of forged gears are considered through functional gear-element tolerances by measuring pitch error profile error lead error radial error tooth thickness and rolling test. Results of the experiments can be summarized as follows: (1) involute spur gears of KS 5(or AGMA7) accuracies can be made,(2) concentricity of die set should be maintained within 0.01mm (3) clearance between the billet and die set should be less than 0.1mm (4) con-centricity and radial runout should be less than 0.08mm and 0.1mm respectively. However it is thought that FEM analysis of elastic/thermal deformations of dies and the billet is necessary for a better understanding of the findings obtained through the present study.
