A high-frequency analysis technique, called the hidden rays of diffraction (HRD), is reviewed in this paper. The physical optics and the rigorous diffraction coefficients of a perfectly conducting wedge illuminated by a plane wave are compared. The physical existence of hidden rays on the shadow boundary is explained in view of the geometric theory of diffraction (GTD). In particular, a systematic tracing of hidden rays and its visualization are precisely described by introducing the concept of the supplementary boundary. The physical meaning of the null-field condition in the complementary region is also explained.

In this paper, radar cross section (RCS) analysis program, RACSAN has been developed to predict RCS of complex structures. RACSAN is based on the high frequency range analysis method of Kirchhoff approximation in physical optics (PO). This program can present RCS including multi-bounce effect in complex structures by combination of geometric optics (GO) and PO method. GO method has a concern in the evaluation of the effective area, and PO method is involved in the calculation of RCS for the final effective area that is evaluated by GO method. Comparisons of the predicted results and analytical solutions showed that the developed program could be an effective tool for predicting RCS in complex structures.

Diffraction patterns of electromagnetic fields for the incidence of E-polarized plane wave on both interfaces of an arbitrary-angle dielect wedge are obtained by sum of geometric optics term and the edge diffracted fields. The diffraction coefficients of the edge diffracted fields are evaluated by employing the physical optics approximation and then correcting its error with the multipole line source at the dielectric edge. For the wedge angle $120^{circ}$, the incident angle $60^{circ}$, the relative dielectric constant of the dielectric wedge, 2, 5, and 10, and the observation distance from the tip of the wedge, 5 and 10 wavelength, the diffraction coefficients and the diffraction patterns corresponding to geometric optics, physical optics, and the solution corrected by the multipole line source are plotted, respectively. While the corrected solutions presented in this paper are valid only in the far-field region, these asymptotic solutions show to satisfy the boundary condition on the dielectric interfaces.
The optical force on a perfectly reflecting sphere in a ray-optics regime is considered. With the assumption of geometric optics and a sphere smaller than the minimum waist of the illuminating beam, closed-form analytic expressions of the optical force are derived. Both axial and radial forces are expressed by a modified Bessel function of the first kind. The derived analytic expressions are compared to precise numerical computations of the exact optical force equations derived previously. In addition the error due to the small sphere assumption is estimated analytically.

Non-contacting optical microscopes are increasingly used in recent industrial applications of probes for coordinate measuring machines. They have been found more efficient than conventional touch trigger porbes with ball tips especially in inspecting small-sized objects. There are two major factors affecting measuring accuracy: (1) geometric relations between coordinate systems, (2) magnification ratios of a microscope. In order to determine the magnification ratios exactly, optical imaging of edge was theroretically analyzed and practically adopted to image processing for edge detection. In addition, this paper proposes a geometric calibration method to obtain exact coordinates of measured points from the relations between the machine coordinate system and the image. In the method, the error according to the squareness between the machine axises was also removed. The method was practically adopted to a real coordinate measuring machine. An ultraprecision measurement of 0.2 um uncertainty can be practically achieved.
Purpose: In this study, the mounting status of trial case lens was investigated. Methods: We measured distances between geometric center of lens mount and optical center of lens and angle deviations between axis mark on lens and real axis using arbitrary trial case lens sets distributed in Korea, and then, compared those results with international standards. Results: In some of lenses, the prismatic power on geometric center of lens mount and the angle deviations between axis mark and real axis of cylindrical lens were out of tolerance according international standards. Conclusions: The more precise control of the manufacturing process and more thorough quality control for trial case lenses will be required to offer an accurate vision test.
Since the new field information of target signal is important in the development and verification of active sonar system, experimental method and simulation technique are widely used in order to analyze the detail characteristics of target scattered echoes. Therefore, in this paper, the scale target experiment is performed to develope and Improve the target signal simulation model. Since the experimental results show that the specular reflection is the major component among scattering mechanisms, the target signal simulation model based on the Geometric Optics Theory (GOT) is developed. Complex target is separated into simple shapes, known as canonical shape. The contribution from individual canonical shapes are summed with proper phase and amplitude to produce the target strength of the whole complex body. Simulated target signal is compared with the experimental results and discussed.

A software system for a complex object scattering analysis, named SYSCOS, has been developed for a systematic radar cross section (RCS) analysis and reduction design. The system is based on the high frequency analysis methods of physical optics, geometrical optics, and physical theory of diffraction, which are suitable for RCS analysis of electromagnetically large and complex targets as like naval ships. In addition, a direct scattering center analysis function has been included, which gives relatively simple and intuitive way to discriminate problem areas in design stage when comparing with conventional image-based approaches. In this paper, the theoretical background and the organization of the SYSCOS system are presented. To verify its accuracy and to demonstrate its applicability, numerical analyses for a square plate, a sphere and a cylinder, a weapon system and a virtual naval ship have been carried out, of which results have been compared with analytic solutions and those obtained by the other existing software.
The rifling angle of artillery is an important parameter, and its determination plays a key role in the stability, hit rate, accuracy and service life of artillery. In this study, we propose an optical measurement method for the rifling angle based on angle error correction. The method is based on the principle of geometrical optics imaging, where the rifling on the inner wall of the artillery barrel is imaged on a CCD camera target surface by an optical system. When the measurement system moves in the barrel, the rifling image rotates accordingly. According to the relationship between the rotation angle of the rifling image and the travel distance of the measurement system, different types of rifling equations are established. Solving equations of the rifling angle are deduced according to the definition of the rifling angle. Furthermore, we added an angle error correction function to the method that is based on the theory of dynamic optics. This function can measure and correct the angle error caused by the posture change of the measurement system. Thus, the rifling angle measurement accuracy is effectively improved. Finally, we simulated and analyzed the influence of parameter changes of the measurement system on rifling angle measurement accuracy. The simulation results show that the rifling angle measurement method has high measurement accuracy, and the method can be applied to different types of rifling angle measurements. The method provides the theoretical basis for the development of a high-precision rifling measurement system in the future.
