  • A reliability analysis method is proposed in this paper through a combination of the advantages of the response surface method (RSM), finite element method (FEM), first order reliability method (FORM) and the importance sampling updating method. The accuracy and efficiency of the method is demonstrated through several numerical examples. Then the method is used to estimate the serviceability reliability of cable-stayed bridges. Effects of geometric nonlinearity, randomness in loading, material, and geometry are considered. The example cable-stayed bridge is the Second Nanjing Bridge with a main span length of 628 m built in China. The results show that the cable sag that is part of the geometric nonlinearities of cable-stayed bridges has a major effect on the reliability of cable-stayed bridge. Finally, the most influential random variables on the reliability of cable-stayed bridges are identified by using a sensitivity analysis.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present a numerical procedure to analyse reinforced concrete columns subjected to combined axial loads and bending that rigorously considers nonlinear material and nonlinear geometric characteristics. Column design and stability analysis are simultaneously regarded. A finite element method is used for calculating displacements and the material and geometric nonlinearities are taken into account using an iterative process. A computer program is developed from the proposed numerical procedure, and the efficiency of the program is verified against available experimental data. The model applies to constant rectangular cross sectional columns with symmetric reinforcement distribution.

  • In the development of sheet-handling machinery, it is important to predict the static and dynamic behavior of the sheets with a high degree of reliability. Flexible media is very thin, very light and very flexible so it behaves geometric nonlinearity of large displacement and large rotation but small strain. In this paper, static and dynamic analyses of flexible media are performed by dynamic FEM considering geometric nonlinearity. Mass and tangent stiffness matrices based on the Co-rotational(CR) approach are derived and numerical simulations are performed by full Newton-Raphson(FNR) method and Newmark integration scheme.

  • To investigate the nonlinear aerostatic stability of the Hutong cable-stayed rail-cum-road bridge with ultra-kilometer main span, a FEM bridge model is established. The tri-component wind loads and geometric nonlinearity are taken into consideration and discussed for the influence of nonlinear parameters and factors on bridge resistant capacity of aerostatic instability. The results show that the effect of initial wind attack-angle is significant for the aerostatic stability analysis of the bridge. The geometric nonlinearities of the bridge are of considerable importance in the analysis, especially the effect of cable sag. The instable mechanism of the Hutong Bridge with a steel truss girder is the spatial combination of vertical bending and torsion with large lateral bending displacement. The design wind velocity is much lower than the static instability wind velocity, and the structural aerostatic resistance capacity can meet the requirement.

  • In the development of sheet-handling machinery, it is important to predict the static and dynamic behavior of the sheets with a high degree of reliability because the sheets are fed and stacked at such a high speed. Flexible media behaves geometric nonlinearity of large displacement and small strain. In this paper, static and dynamic analyses of flexible media are performed by FEM considering geometric nonlinearity. Linear stiffness matrix and geometric nonlinear stiffness matrix based on the Co-rotational(CR) approach are derived and numerical simulations are performed by Updated Newton-Raphson(UNR) method and Newmark integration scheme.

  • This paper is a presentation of a physical model for the elastic-partly plastic behavior of rectangular hollow section pinned struts subjected to static cyclic axial loading and the evaluation of the compressive strength of retrofitted damaged struts. Retrofitting is achieved by welding stiffening plates along the webs of damaged struts. The shape of the elastic and permanent deformations of the strut axis satisfy the conditions at the ends and midspan. Continuous functions of the geometric variables of stress distributions in the yielded zone are evaluated by interpolation between three points along each partly plastic zone. Permanent deformations of the partly plastic region are computed and used to update the shape of the unloaded strut. The necessity of considering geometric nonlinearity is discussed. The sensitivity of the results to the location of interpolation points, the shape of the permanent deformation and material hysteretic properties is investigated.

  • A study for the nonlinear analysis of segmentally erected curved PSC(prestressed concrete) cable-stayed bridge considering the effects due to large deflections is presented. Various case studies regarding the effects of the material nonlinearities and the geometric nonlinearities on the behavior of segmentally erected curved PSC cable-stayed bridge are conducted. The numerical results on the bridge which has relatively low stress profile through the bridge deck section like the example herein show that the geometric nonlinearities has more significant effects on the structural behavior than the material nonlinearities.

  • Piezoactuator using a flexure hinge mechanism is often used in the precision stages. When the total size of the hinge mechanism become small compared with the deformation of the hinge mechanism, the geometrical nonlinearity makes a considerable error in the output displacement. In this research, the incremental method based on the matrix method is developed to model the effect of the geometrical nonlinearity. Developed modeling method is applied to derive the error of output displacement of the bridge-type hinge mechanism and its results are derived with respect to the design parameters. This method can be easily used to the design optimization of the hinge mechanism and analysis results show that the geometrical nonlinearity error should be considered to achieve a high accuracy to the piezoactuators.

  • In this paper, the thermal post-buckling characteristics of functionally graded (FG) pipes with initial geometric imperfection are studied. Considering the influence of initial geometric defects, temperature and geometric nonlinearity, Euler-Lagrange principle is used to derive the nonlinear governing equations of the FG pipes. Considering three different boundary conditions, the two-step perturbation method is used to solve the nonlinear governing equations, and the expressions of thermal post-buckling responses are also obtained. Finally, the correctness of this paper is verified by numerical analyses, and the effects of initial geometric defects, functional graded index, elastic foundation, porosity, thickness of pipe and boundary conditions on thermal post-buckling response are analyzed. It is found that, bifurcation buckling exists for the pipes without initial geometric imperfection. In contrast, there is no bifurcation buckling phenomenon for the pipes with initial geometric imperfection. Meanwhile, the elastic stiffness can significantly improve thermal post-buckling load and thermal post-buckling strength. The larger the porosity, the greater the thermal buckling load and the thermal buckling strength.
