  • This research develops the robot for the machining work. For machining work(cutting, milling, grilling, etc.), a robot manipulator is constructed by combining a parallel and a serial mechanism to increase stiffness as well as enlarge workspace. Based on the geometric constraints, this paper develops the formulation for inverse/direct kinematics and Jacobian to design and control a robot. Workspace is also analyzed to prove the advantage of the proposed robot.

  • Presented in this paper is a modeling and simulation methodology for 3 dimensional man-made systems. Based on DEVS(discrete event system specification) formalism[13], we propose GK-DEVS (geometrical and kinematic DEVS) formalism to describe the geometrical and kinematic structure and continuous state dynamics. To represent geometry and kinematics, we add a hierarchical structure to the conventional atomic model. In addition, we employ the "empty event" and its external event function for continuous state changing. In terms of abstract simulation algorithm[13], the simulation method of GK-DEVS, named GK-Simulator, is proposed for combined discrete-continuous simulation. Using GK-DEVS, the simulation of an FMS(flexible manufacturing system) consisting of a luring machine, a 3-axis machine and a RGV-mounted robot has been peformed.en peformed.

  • This paper presents the development of a Parallel-Typed CNC Machining Tool. It is specially designed to machine a complex shaped workpiece by controlling the orientation of the tool. The inverse/direct kinematics of a parallel mechanism is derived and implemented in a PC based controller. With graphics icons, the GUI (Graphic User Interface) program is developed for the CNC programing. The calibration is accomplished by geometric constraint motion, which is a parallel motion of the platform with respect to a table. The calibration result is introduced and the future study is proposed.

  • The sub-surface stress field beneath the gear's contact surface caused by the surface pressure in lubricated condition is analyzed. To evaluate the influence of the clearances between a gear tooth and a pinion tooth on the stress field, two kinds of tooth profile models - conventional cylinder contact model and new numerical model - were chosen. Kinematics of the gear is taken into account to obtain the numerical model which is the accurate geometric clearances between a gear tooth and a pinion tooth. Transient elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) analysis is performed to get the surface pressure. The sub-stress field is obtained by using Love's rectangular patch solution. The analysis results show that the sub-surface stress is quite dependent on both the surface pressures and the profile models. The maximum effective stress of the new model is lower than that of the old model. The depth where the maximum effective stress occurs in the new model is not proportional to the intensity of the external load.

  • Using a conventional railway, a tilting train was applied as a means of improving vehicle speed during curve negotiation without any modification of infrastructure. As a study for the optimum design of the tilting mechanism of a tilting vehicle, the kinematics sensitivity of the tilting mechanism was analyzed. Using the geometric relationship of the linkage-type tilting mechanism, the relationship of the parameters and the performance index was defined using nonlinear algebraic equations. With the defined relation, the effect of change in the parameters on the performance was analyzed. The analysis result can be used in the optimum design of a tilting mechanism that considers the track environment, vehicle and operational condition in which the tilting vehicle is applied.

  • In this study, we proposed the wire parallel mechanism that can be used to measure a full pose of a robot. It is composed of six parallel links using wire. The position and orientation of the end effectorf of a robot are calculated using the length of wires which is measured by the encoder. The complex non- linear equations of the forward kinematics are solved by using a numerical method, and the unique solution is obtained from the geometric configuration of the device. The length error of the wire which occurs in static condition is compensated by the relational equation that considered longitudinal extension and defoection of the wire. Through this work, we known that the proposed device has a good accuracy( .+-. 0.01mm) in a large measuring region, so it can be used effectively in a callibration of a robot which required a low cost.

  • Gear trains are used in many machinery for variable speed ratios. Typical shapes of gear trains are tivo categories : simple gear trains and planetary gear trains. This paper presents the kinematic ctraracteristics for planetary gear trains. The characteristics are the constraints of geometric relationships, number of gears, speed of each gear. and speed ratio of the train. The objective goal of this paper provides the CAI) software, which is the academic tool for understanding the kinematics of the planetary gear trains.

  • We persent a method for kinematic calibration of open chain mechanisms based on the product of exponentials (POE) formula. The POE formula represents the forward kinematics of an open chain as a product of matrix exponentials, and is based on a modern geometric interpretation of classical screw theory. Unlike the kinematic parameters in the POE formula vary smoothly with changes in the joint axes;ad hoc methods designed to address the inherent singularities in the D-H parameters are therefore are therefore unnecessary. After introducing the POE formula, we derive a least-squares kinematic calibration algorithm for general open chain mechanisms. Simulation results with a 6-axis open chain are presented.

  • An adaptronic strut for machine tools with parallel kinematics for compensation of the influence of geometric errors is introduced. Implemented within the strut is a piezoelectric sensor-actuator unit separated in function. In the first part of this contribution, the functional principle of the strut is presented. For use of one piezoelectric transducer as both, sensor and actuator as so-called self-sensing actuator, the acquisition of the sensing signal while actuating simultaneously using electrical bridge circuits as well as filter properties are examined. In the second part the control concept developed for the adaptronic strut is presented. A co-simulation model of the strut for simulating the controlled multi-body behavior of the strut is set-up. The control design for the strut as a stand-alone system is tested under various external loads. Finally, the strut is implemented into a model of the complete machine tool and the influence of the controlled strut onto the behavior of the machine tool is examined.

  • The concept of variable-geometry truss structure(VGTS) is introduced as a class of actively controlled adaptive structure. VGTS can purposefully vary its geometric configurations by changing the lengths of some members of the structure. General kinematics and inverse kinematics of a statically determinate VGTS(variable geometry truss structure) are studied. The solution technique is based on the Jacobian matrix obtained via joint equilibrium equations. Pseudoinverse control method is applied to resolve the redundancy of a large VGTS. two types of actuator layout of octahedral type VGTS, VG truss and Stewart platform, are compared. Introducing the concept of performance index, Stewart platform based layout was found to has less consumption energy and manipulation time. A functional VGTS model with 3 octahedral modules is designed and manufactured for the labaratory demonstration. Six vertically located length-variable members are used to create general 6 d.o.f. motions.
