Experimental Tests and Analytical Study for the Prediction of the Plastic Moment Capacity of an Unstiffened Top and Seat Angle Connection (무보강 상·하부 ㄱ형강 접합부의 소성휨모멘트 저항능력 예측을 위한 실험 및 해석적 연구)

  • An unstiffened top and seat angle connection is a type of partially restrained connection that is suitable for low- and medium-rise steel buildings. The plastic moment resisting capacity of such connection is needed in practical design, in addition to the accurate prediction of the initial rotational stiffness. Therefore, most of the studies conducted for the mentioned connections were performed to predict the initial stiffness and the plastic moment resisting capacity with varying geometric properties. The main parameters of such experimental tests were the thickness and high-strength bolt gauge distance of AISC LRFD-type A top and seat angle connections. Based on the test results, the analytical model was also proposed in this study. The applicability of the proposed model was verified by comparing the test results from this study with those of other studies.

Effects of geometric conditions of blade on Performance of Axial Pan (익형의 기하학적 조건에 따른 축류팬의 성능에 관한 연구)

  • Axial fan is used for the supplement of large amount of flows. Axial blowers show relatively high efficiency of the system. The present model of axial fan is for cooling a condenser in an air-conditioning unit that exhibits tendency toward compact size. In order to realize the compact model, the width of an axial blade should be cut down in axial distance. Main interest lies on the performance of the axial blowing system with blades having shorter chord length. One of the important design parameters for axial fan is the shape of the blades of it. Design of blades includes the cross-sectional shape and its dimension, including the chord length. We consider two types of blades; one is NACA airfoil with normal chord length and the other is with shortening chord length by $10\%$ of normal airfoil. Axial blower with the modified blades is essential for the compact model of an air-conditioner. The other design parameters are same in the two cases. Using a wind tunnel follows ASHRAE standards carries out evaluation of performance of the system. Detail of flows around the blades is prepared by velocity measurements using PIV. According to performance estimation, the axial blower with short chord blade show quite close to the performance results, including flow rate and pressure rise, of the standard one. The reason of the two similar results is that the flowpatterns depend on Reynolds number based on the chord length of a blade. In this investigation, the critical chord length is found, in which the flows near the airfoil are so unstable and the performance of the system is decreased. Derivation of Dimensionless Routing Curves for Dam Failure Flood Wave (댐 붕괴 홍수파 해석을 위한 무차원 홍수추적곡선의 유도)

  • The types of dam-break have been classified as instantaneous and gradual failure. Equations for estimating the peak outflow have been derived respectively as a metric unit. New dimensionless routing curves have been deveoloped based on the distance parameter which has been used in SMPDBK and hydro-geometric characteristics of dams and reservoirs in Korea. These suggested curves can be used for any case of the flow of supercritical or subcritical. The computed peak flowrate shows the trend of decreasing dependence on the Froude numbers as it increases. These curves are applied to Hyogi dam. and the results have good agreements with the data observed in the peak discharges, peak elevations and flood travel time. The simplified dam-break model in this study would contribute effectively to forecast the dam-break flood in this country with minimum informations in a short time.

Effect of Target Angle and Thickness on the Heel Effect and X-ray Intensity Characteristics for 70 kV X-ray Tube Target

  • To investigate the optimum x-ray tube design for the dental radiology, factors affecting x-ray beam characteristics such as tungsten target thickness and anode angle were evaluated. Another goal of the study was to addresses the anode heel effect and off-axis spectra for different target angles. MCNPX has been utilized to simulate the diagnostic x-ray tube with the aim of predicting optimum target angle and angular distribution of x-ray intensity around the x-ray target. For simulation of x-ray spectra, MCNPX was run in photon and electron using default values for PHYS:P and PHYS:E cards to enable full electron and photon transport. The x-ray tube consists of an evacuated 1 mm alumina envelope containing a tungsten anode embedded in a copper part. The envelope is encased in lead shield with an opening window. MCNPX simulations were run for x-ray tube potentials of 70 kV. A monoenergetic electron source at the distance of 2 cm from the anode surface was considered. The electron beam diameter was 0.3 mm striking on the focal spot. In this work, the optimum thickness of tungsten target was $3{\mu}m$ for the 70 kV electron potential. To determine the angle with the highest photon intensity per initial electron striking on the target, the x-ray intensity per initial electron was calculated for different tungsten target angles. The optimum anode angle based only on x-ray beam flatness was 35 degree. It should be mentioned that there is a considerable trade-off between anode angle which determines the focal spot size and geometric penumbra. The optimized thickness of a target material was calculated to maximize the x-ray intensity produced from a tungsten target materials for a 70 keV electron energy. Our results also showed that the anode angle has an influencing effect on heel effect and beam intensity across the beam.

Face classification and analysis based on geometrical feature of face (얼굴의 기하학적 특징정보 기반의 얼굴 특징자 분류 및 해석 시스템)

  • This paper proposes an algorithm to classify and analyze facial features such as eyebrow, eye, mouth and chin based on the geometric features of the face. As a preprocessing process to classify and analyze the facial features, the algorithm extracts the facial features such as eyebrow, eye, nose, mouth and chin. From the extracted facial features, it detects the shape and form information and the ratio of distance between the features and formulated them to evaluation functions to classify 12 eyebrows types, 3 eyes types, 9 mouth types and 4 chine types. Using these facial features, it analyzes a face. The face analysis algorithm contains the information about pixel distribution and gradient of each feature. In other words, the algorithm analyzes a face by comparing such information about the features.

  • In this paper, we propose a robust pupil detection method using rank order filter and pixel value difference in facial image. We have detected the potential pupil candidates using rank order filter. Many false pupil candidates found at eyebrow are removed using the fact that the pixel difference is much at the boundary between pupil and sclera. The rest pupil candidates are grouped into pairs. Each pair is verified according to geometric constraints such as the angle and the distance between two candidates. A fitness function is obtained for each pair using the pixel values of two pupil regions, we select a pair with the smallest fitness value as a final pupil. The experiments have been performed for 400 images of the BioID face database. The results show that it achieves more than 90% accuracy, and especially the proposed method improves the detection rate and high accuracy for face with spectacle.

Development of Collision Risk Evaluation Model Between Passing Vessel and Mokpo Harbour Bridge (통항 선박과 목포 대교의 충돌 위기 평가 모델 개발)

  • To assess the possible collision risk between Mokpo Harbour Bridge, which is under construction, and passing vessels, we proposed Real-Time Bridge-Vessel Collision Model (RT-BVCM) in this paper. The mathematical model of RT-BVCM consists of the causation probability by the vessel aberrancy due to navigation environments, the geometric probability by the structural feature of a bridge relative to a ship size and, the failure probability by the ship collision track and the stopping distance which is not to come to a stop before hitting the obstacles. Then, the probabilistic mathematical model represented as risk index with the risk level from 1 to 5. The merit of the proposed model to the collision model proposed by AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) is that it can provide enough time to take adequate collision avoiding action. Through the simulation tests to the two kinds of test ships, 3,000 GT and 10,000 GT, it is cleary found that the proposed model can be used as a collision evaluation model to the passing vessel and Mokpo Harbour Bridge.

An Analysis of Safety Impacts of Variable Message Signage as Functions of Road Curve Radius (도로곡선반경에 따른 가변전광표지의 교통안전효과 분석)

  • PURPOSES: The purpose of this study is to estimate the impact of variable message signage (VMS) on traffic safety as a function of road curve radius using statistical methods. METHODS: In order to analyze the impact of VMS installations on traffic safety, travel speed, lateral distance, and geometric data relating to road curvature in each study area was acquired and analyzed for the impact of providing VMS information on driver performance and traffic safety using statistical methods including student t-test, Mann-Whitney test, and the Anderson-Darling test for estimating traffic safety hazard zone in each lane. RESULTS: As a result of analyzing driver performance characteristics before and after providing VMS information, it was determined that by providing VMS information, mean travel speed is deceased and vehicles are driven with increased precision, following the centerline in the first and second lanes. Also the results of analyzing traffic safety impacts of VMS indicate that traffic safety performance factors in the first lane of the Gapyeong section can, on average, increase in the left and right side of the lane by 19.22% and 68.98%, respectively, and in the case of the second lane, safety impacts, on average, can increase in both sides by 100%. For the Hongcheon section, traffic safety impacts in the first lane, on average, can increase along the left and right sides of the lane by 32.31% and 47.18%, and within the second lane, traffic safety can be increased along the left and right side of the lane by 10.97% and -0.01%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results of this study, the impact on traffic safety obtained by providing VMS information for road sections with smaller curve radii is greater than can be obtained for road sections with larger curve radii.

  • Digital watermarking is a technique embedding hidden information into multimedia data imperceptibly such as images and sounds. Generally an original image is transformed and coded watermark data is embedded in frequency domain watermarking models. In this paper, We propose a new data embedding method using Fresnel transform. A watermark image is fresnel-transformed and the intensity of transformed pattern is embedded into original image. Our watermarking model has the flexibility In data embedding. It is possible to get many embedding patterns from a single watermark image by using various distance parameters with Fresnel transform. All kinds of image models such af shape, letter and photo ran be used as a watermark data. The watermarking experiments were conducted to show the validity of the proposed method, and the results show that our method has the robustness against lossy compression, filtering and geometric transformation.

Synthetic Seismograms of Non-geometric S* and P* Waves Using the Reflectivity Method (반사도 기법에 의한 비기하적 S* 및 P* 파의 합성 계산)

  • Synthetic seismograms and deduced characteristic properties of the non-geometrical $S^*$ and $P^*$ waves are presented. These waves are excited on the free surface or an interface between two different media by an inhomogeneous P wave from a point source nearby, and propagate as homogeneous waves in the media. Synthetic seismograms are computed using an extended reflectivity method designed for buried source and receiver. An efficient computational procedure for propagator matrices of layers is devised to reduce the computational time and the RAM memory size in the implementation of the reflectivity method. Radiation patterns are obtained from the particle motions of the four types of the "*" waves, i.e., the $S^*$ wave generated near the free surface, and the reflected $S^*$, transmitted $S^*$ and transmitted $P^*$ waves generated near an interface. Some patterns show polarity changes of displacements and others reveal monotonic or non-monotonic variation of amplitude depending on the velocity structure. The decaying trend of amplitude with increasing epicentral distance are also shown for the head wave type of the "*" waves.
