Recently, the necessity of spatial data in unaccessible area was challenged to set up various plans and policies for preparing the unification and the cooperative projects between South-North Korea. Therefore, this paper planned to evaluate the possibility of adopting the error tolerance in Geometric correction for 1/5,000 digital topographic mapping, using the PLEIADES images and the TerraSAR GCPs (Ground Control Points). The geometric correction was performed by changing the number and placement of GCPs by GPS (Global Positioning System) surveying, as the optimal placement of 5 GCPs were selected considering the geometric stability and steady rate. The positional accuracy evaluated by the TerraSAR GCPs, which were selected by optimal placement of GCPs. The RMSE in control points were X=±0.64m, Y=±0.46m, Z=±0.28m. While the result of geometric correction for PLEIADES images confirmed that the RMSE in control points were X=±0.34m, Y=±0.27m, Z=±0.11m, the RMSE in check points were X=±0.50m, Y=±0.30m, Z=±0.66m. Through this study, we believe if spatial data can integrate with the PLEIADES images and the optimal TerraSAR GCPs, it will be able to obtain the high-precision spatial data for adopting the regulation of 1/5,000 digital topographic map, which adjusts the computation as well as the error bound.
This paper presents a research result that was performed to develop a more accurate freeway crash prediction model than existing models. While the existing crash models only focus on developing crash relationships associated with highway geometric conditions found on a short section of a crash site, this research applies a different approach considering the upstream highway geometric conditions as well. Theoretically, crashes occur while motorists are in motion, and particularly at freeways vehicle speed at one specific point is very sensitive to upstream geometric conditions. Therefore, this is a reasonable approach. To form the analysis data base, this research gathers the geometric conditions of the West Seaside Freeway 269.3 km and six years crash data ranging 2003-2008 for these freeway sections. As a result, it is found that crashes fit well into Negative Binomial Distribution, and, based on the developed model, total number of crashes is inversely proportional to highway curve length and radius. Contrarily, crash occurrences are proportional to tangent length. This result is different from existing crash study results, and it seems to be resulted from this research assumption that a crash is influenced greatly by upstream geometric conditions. Also, this research provides the expected effects on crash occurrences of the length of downgrade sections, speed camera placements, and the on- and off- ramp presences. It is expected that this research result is useful for doing more reasonable highway designs and safety audit analysis, and applying the same research approach to national roads and other major roads in urban areas is recommended.

The first Korean geostationary weather satellite, Communications, Oceanography and Meteorology Satellite (COMS) will be launched in 2008. The ground station for COMS needs to perform geometric correction to improve accuracy of satellite image data and to broadcast geometrically corrected images to users within 30 minutes after image acquisition. For such a requirement, we developed automated and fast geometric correction techniques. For this, we generated control points automatically by matching images against coastline data and by applying a robust estimation called RANSAC. We used GSHHS (Global Self-consistent Hierarchical High-resolution Shoreline) shoreline database to construct 211 landmark chips. We detected clouds within the images and applied matching to cloud-free sub images. When matching visible channels, we selected sub images located in day-time. We tested the algorithm with GOES-9 images. Control points were generated by matching channel 1 and channel 2 images of GOES against the 211 landmark chips. The RANSAC correctly removed outliers from being selected as control points. The accuracy of sensor models established using the automated control points were in the range of $1{\sim}2$ pixels. Geometric correction was performed and the performance was visually inspected by projecting coastline onto the geometrically corrected images. The total processing time for matching, RANSAC and geometric correction was around 4 minutes.
Analyzing the collapse behavior of thin-walled steel structures holds significant importance in ensuring their safety and longevity. Geometric imperfections present on the surface of metal materials can diminish both the durability and mechanical integrity of steel shells. These imperfections, encompassing local geometric irregularities and deformations such as holes, cavities, notches, and cracks localized in specific regions of the shell surface, play a pivotal role in the assessment. They can induce stress concentration within the structure, thereby influencing its susceptibility to buckling. The intricate relationship between the buckling behavior of these structures and such imperfections is multifaceted, contingent upon a variety of factors. The buckling analysis of thin-walled steel shell structures, similar to other steel structures, commonly involves the determination of crucial material properties, including elastic modulus, shear modulus, tensile strength, and fracture toughness. An established method involves the emulation of distributed geometric imperfections, utilizing real test specimen data as a basis. This approach allows for the accurate representation and assessment of the diversity and distribution of imperfections encountered in real-world scenarios. Utilizing defect data obtained from actual test samples enhances the model's realism and applicability. The sizes and configurations of these defects are employed as inputs in the modeling process, aiding in the prediction of structural behavior. It's worth noting that there is a dearth of experimental studies addressing the influence of geometric defects on the buckling behavior of cylindrical steel shells. In this particular study, samples featuring geometric imperfections were subjected to experimental buckling tests. These same samples were also modeled using Finite Element Analysis (FEM), with results corroborating the experimental findings. Furthermore, the initial geometrical imperfections were measured using digital image correlation (DIC) techniques. In this way, the response of the test specimens can be estimated accurately by applying the initial imperfections to FE models. After validation of the test results with FEA, a numerical parametric study was conducted to develop more generalized design recommendations for the stainless-steel shell structures with the initial geometric imperfection. While the load-carrying capacity of samples with perfect surfaces was up to 140 kN, the load-carrying capacity of samples with 4 mm defects was around 130 kN. Likewise, while the load carrying capacity of samples with 10 mm defects was around 125 kN, the load carrying capacity of samples with 14 mm defects was measured around 120 kN.

In manufacturing of exact products, the offsetting is required to transfer the design data of shape to manufacturing data. In offsetting the degeneracies are occurred, and these problems are mere difficult in freeform shapr manufacuring. This paper is using the geometric properties of B-spline curves to solve the degeneracy of offsetting and to generating of enhanced offsetting. The offsetting of B-spline control polygon spans generates exact control polygon of original shapes. This method is faster in generating offset curve than the normal offsetting, and the resulted offset curves are exact. The additional property of this method is using to control offset shape as B-spline curves. We believe that this method is as effective solution for modifying of offset curves.

A method of conflict detection and resolution is described by using simple geometric approach. Two VAVs are dealt with and considered as point masses with constant velocity. This paper discusses en route aircraft which are assumed to be linked by real time data bases like ADS-B. With this data base, all DAVs share the information each other. Calculating PCA (Point of Closest Approach), we can evaluate the worst conflict condition between two VAVs. This paper proposes one resolution maneuvering logic, which can be called 'Vector Sharing Resolution'. In case of conflict, using miss distance vector in PCA, we can decide the directions for two VAVs to share the conflict region. With these directions, VAVs are going to maneuver cooperatively. First of all, this paper describes some '2-D' conflict scenarios and then extends to '3-D' conflict scenarios.

Reverse engineering (RE) is a process to create computer aided design (CAD) models from the scanned data of an existing part acquired using 3D position scanners. This paper proposes a novel methodology of extracting geometric features directly from a set of 3D scanned points, which utilizes the concepts of feature-based technology and artificial neural networks (ANNs). The use of ANN has enabled the development of a flexible feature-based RE application that can be trained to deal with various features. The following four main tasks were mainly investigated and implemented: (1) Data reduction; (2) edge detection; (3) ANN-based feature recognition; (4) feature extraction. This approach was validated with a variety of real industrial components. The test results show that the developed feature-based RE application proved to be suitable for reconstructing prismatic features such as block, pocket, step, slot, hole, and boss, which are very common and crucial in mechanical engineering products.

To construct the design back data for a lean-burn gas engine, we investigated the combustion characteristics in the main chamber using a constant volume combustion chamber with subchamber. The combustion characteristics with configuration change of the critical passageholes have been studied by taking pressure data, schlieren photograph, ion current and light emission signal of flame. Heat release rate with various critical passageholes also have been analysed by using the combustion model of a prechamber diesel engine. It was found that combustion characteristics in the main combustion chamber were greatly influenced by the geometric configurations of critical passagehole.
Since the expressway was first opened in 1968 there has been continued demand for constructing new lines of expressway, and thus it amounts to 1,420.5km in total length as of 1984. As the expressway becomes to take up more important role in our country facing motorization traffic accidents have become more of social issues, although its accident rates are relatively low compared to those on general highways in Korea, which is among the highest in the world. The purpose of the study is to investigate the correlation between the traffic accident rates on the expressway and their geometric characteristics based upon 1982 data. In order to extract the correlationship among them on as much disaggregate basis, the study has carried out the analysis on the primary data aggregated on the 100 meter intervals. One of the important findings was, among others, the design criteria of the expressway should be reconsidered with respect to the radius of the curve, superelevation, climbing lane, composed gradients, interchange facilities, tunnels and so on.

The philosophy of object-oriented has found its role in various applications such as programming languages, databases, distributed systems, etc. Discussed in this paper is an experience of the object-oriented programming technique obtained while developing a particular CAD/CAM system. It has been well-known that the object-oriented programming language has good features enabling the improved reusability and extensibility of an existing code. The features include data abstraction, encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism, and so on. This paper presents how these features of the object-oriented programming language, C++ in particular, can be applied to the implementation of geometric algorithms as well as graphical user interfaces.
