  • This paper presents the interactive method of showing geological hazard maps and other related information using the new GIS software developed at the Geological Survey of Japan. The main purpose of the software is to easily provide information about geological hazards to a wide range of users. The software incorporates spatial and a-spatial data to interactively present the time, locations and extent of occurrence of geological hazards and other related information. Queries for hazard information can be easily done. Simulations of the occurrence of a particular geological event like the spread of volcanic ash during major volcanic eruptions can also be easily shown.

  • Geological heritages can be defined conveniently as geological records worthy of conservation, and are represented in most cases by geological outcrops. So survey and evaluation of geologic outcrops are necessary for better conservation of geological heritages. As a measure to prevent potential destruction of geological heritages from various development projects, I propose construction of database based on survey and evaluation forms of geological outcrop, which can also be used for environmental impact assessment. The geological survey form consists of survey area, category, subcategory, location, dimension, geologic features, photo, description, and investigator. The evaluation form consists of evaluation category, detailed evaluation, comprehensive evaluation, and evaluation grade. The evaluation category is divided into academic aspect, education effect and landscape. The detailed evaluation items for academic aspects and education effect are representativeness, rarity, diversity and typicality, while those for geomorphology and landscape are peculiarity, aesthetics and naturalness. The evaluation grades are divided into five, where the first grade means a must of conservation.

  • Most of ground investigations can be grasped geological distribution which like rock name, geological structure, soil condition, underwater condition, land slide, ground cave-in, ground collapse by geological survey. But geological survey is limited to part region geological structure, not wide region. Therefore, Image Processing Method must need to grasp wide region geological structure. The object of this research is presented analysis data of geotechnical engineering in first step investigation.

  • On the Sub- way Construction It is important to Survey in advance the Geological Structure and also to make the Engineering Geological map this paper deseribs the feature of Geological structure of Seoul Area and analyses the recently occured Rock falling acciudents. NATM Tunnelling always must be done with careful observation and measurement of the geological condition.

  • The achievements of Tateiwa Iwao's work in Korea are assessed as follows. Firstly, he pioneered the practice of stratigraphy in the Korean peninsula and completed geological maps of 21 sheets at 1:50,000 scale. Secondly, he published the results of a geological survey as bulletins, technical reports, and papers. Thirdly, he faithfully carried out the handover of assets and research outputs to Korea. Finally, after returning to Japan, Tateiwa wrote a book entitled The Korea-Japanese Tectonic Zone: History of a Geological Survey in Korea. However, he neglected to educate and train the next geologists for conducting geological surveys and exploration in Korea.

  • When subsurface is polluted, contaminants tend to migrate through groundwater flow path. The groundwater flow path is highly dependent upon underground geological structures in the contaminated area. Geophysical survey is an useful tool to identify subsurface geological structure. In addition, geophysical logging in a borehole precisely provides detailed information about geological characteristics in vicinity of the borehole, including fractures, lithology, and groundwater level. In this work, surface seismic refraction and electrical resistivity surveys were conducted in a test site located in Namyangju city, South Korea, along with well logging tests in five boreholes installed in the site. Geophysical data and well logging data were collected and processed to construct an 3D geological map in the site.

  • As a part of the study to know the deep geological structure of the Ogcheon Zone. gravity survey is performed along the survey line of which direction is roughly perpendicular to major faults of the Zone. Recent studies for petrology. geochemistry. and structural geology in south-western Ogcheon Zone are outlined. Raw gravity data are corrected to obtain Bouguer anomalies and the anomalies are interpreted to obtain subsurface structures along the survey line. The subterranean density discontinuities determined from the power spectrum method are appeared at depths of 15.4 km and 2.8 km. It is considered that the depth of 15.4 km indicates the boundary between upper and lower crust. Probably the depth of 2.8 km represents the boundary between upper volcanic formations and granites. Alternatively. the observed Bouguer anomalies are interpreted in terms of lateral density variation model. Finally. the subterranean geological structure to satisfy the Bouguer anomalies is presented through the iterative forward method in which results obtained from surface geological informations and from the inverse method are adopted as an initial model.

  • Advanced geological surveys and exploration activities were first carried out in Korea in 1884 in accordance with a treaty of friendship and commerce between Great Britain and Korea and a treaty of friendship and commerce between Germany and Korea. The first paper by Gottsche, C. was also published in a German Journal in 1886. Efforts toward independent acquisition of Western geological survey and exploration technology were actively promoted by the Korean Empire in the early 1900s, but were frustrated by the Japanese Empire. Systematic geological surveys and exploration were conducted in Korea by Japanese geologists during the Japanese occupation. A basic geological maps(61sheets), a bulletin on the geological survey of Korea, a bulletin and technical report on deposits in Korea, and a coalfield geological survey report were published during this period. Overall, the intentions under lying the geological surveys and exploration activities by foreigners in Korea prior to the Japanese occupation were questionable. However, the results of these surveys and explorations themselves can be evaluated as positive in terms of academic performance.
