With the advent of multi collector-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, stable isotopic variations of non-traditional metal elements have provided important constraints on the sources of geologic materials. This review introduces the principles of magnesium isotopic fractionation and analytical methods. Recent case studies are also reviewed for the use of magnesium isotope signatures to decipher the source materials of I-, S-, and A-type granitoids in western North America, Australia, and China.
The contaminated soil at abandoned smelter areas present challenge for remediation, as the degraded materials are typically deficient in nutrients, and rich in toxic heavy metals and metalloids. Bioremediation technique is to isolate new strains of microorganisms and develop successful protocols for reducing metal toxicity with heavy metal tolerant species. The present study collected metal contaminated soil and characterized for pH and EC values, and heavy metal contents. The pH value was 5.80, representing slightly acidic soil, and EC value was 13.47 mS/m. ICP-AES analytical results showed that the collected soil samples were highly contaminated with various heavy metals and metalloids such as lead (183.0 mg/kg), copper (98.6 mg/kg), zinc (91.6 mg/kg), and arsenic (48.1 mg/kg), respectively. In this study, a bacterial strain, Bacillus cereus KM-15, capable of adsorbing the heavy metals was isolated from the contaminated soils by selective enrichment and characterized to apply for the bioremediation. The effects of heavy metal on the growth of the Bacillus cereus KM-15 was determined in liquid cultures. The results showed that 100 mg/L arsenic, lead, and zinc did not affect the growth of KM-15, while the bacterial growth was strongly inhibited by copper at the same concentration. Further, the ability of the bacteria to adsorb heavy metals was evaluated.

For efficiently designing neutron induced gamma spectroscopy sonde, Monte Carlo simulation is employed to understand a dominant location of thermal neutron and classify the formation elements from the energy peak of capture gamma spectrum. A pulsed neutron generator emitting 14 MeV neutron particles was used as a source, and flux of thermal neutron was calculated from the twelve detectors arranged at each 10 cm intervals from the source. Design for reducing borehole effects using shielding materials was also applied to numerical sonde model. Moreover, principal elements and quantities of numerical earth models were verified through the energy spectrum analysis of capture gamma detected from a gamma detector. These results can help to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio, and determine an optimal placement of capture gamma detectors of neutron induced gamma spectroscopy sonde.

The preservation treatment for the outer rampart of Namhansanseong fortress is needed due to partial collapse and separation of stone materials. In this study, we investigated the petrological features of the stone materials used for the outer rampart and estimated their provenances through the geologic survey. Through the above study, the suitable replacement stone in the maintenance of outer rampart were suggested. The stone materials of the above outer rampart consist of the banded gneiss, augen gneiss, granitic gneiss and porphyroblastic gneiss. Among these four kinds of rocks, granitic gneiss is quantitatively the most abundant. Petrological comparisons between stone materials and rocks distributed around the fortress, lead to the conclusion that the above materials are likely to have been delivered from around the fortress. Judging from the results of the comparison on frequency of use and strength characteristics among the above rocks, the granitic gneiss is considered to be suitable for restoration of the outer rampart of the fortress.
Ground water stored in the alluvium and the rocks provides the vase flow of the streams and can be withdraw from wells and infiltration galleries. And it is also recharge naturallyby precipitation. The amount of ground water in the four major basins it is estimated to be about 137,000 million cubiv meters(Table1), while nationwide ground water storage to be about 232,000 million cubic meters. The estimation of storage volume has been made on the basis of assumed thickness of the saturated zone of the different rocks and assumed porosities of those rocks. The values of the porosity of alluvium and saprolite were assumed to be 25% and 40% respectivvely which are based on tests made of similar materials in Georgia, U.S. The volume of water in storage is believed to be a conservative estimate. Detailed geologic and hydrologic investigation should be made where and when water resources are needed.

Recently, considerable researches have been focused to find out inexpensive sorbents. for removal of heavy metals in aquatic environments. In particular, various natural materials including geologic media have been attractive. In order to evaluate the applicability of the scoria taken from the Jeju island, Korea, to remove Zn(II) from aqueous solutions, the kinetic sorption experiments were performed in this study. The batch-type kinetic sorption tests were carried out under different conditions, such as different initial Zn(II) concentration, particle size of the scoria, and sorbate/sorbent ratio. The results indicated that the removal of Zn(II) by scoria increased with decreases in initial Zn(II) concentration, particle size of the scoria, and sorbate/sorbent ratio. However, the sorption capacity of the scoria decreased with increasing amount of the scoria. The sorption behavior of Zn(II) onto scoria seemed to be mainly controlled by cation exchange.
We use spectral correlation method to analyze gravity and magnetic anomalies of Euiseong Sub-basin for distribution of rock facies and gelogic structures. The analysis reveals distinct polarity between gravity and magnetic anomaly correlation ; intermediate to mafic intrusives, extrusives, and the Tertiary basin shows positive gravity (+G) and positive magnetic (+M) correlation. Granitic gneiss and felsic volcanics negative gravity 9-G) and negative magnetic (-M) correlation. The Palgongsan granite, felsic to mafic extrusives and Mesozoic granites are characterized by -G and + M correlation. +G and -M correlations in the sedimentary formations are interpreted by uplift of pre-Cretaceous basement rocks . The + G and + M correlation characteristics in northeastern part of Euiseong Sub-basin including the Tertiary sedimentary basin result from the uplift of crustal materials. Major axes of spectrally correlated amomalies have mostly NW-SE or NE-SW directions. The former is due to the intrusives along strike-slip faults, and the latter which is observed in sedimentary formations is related to geological structures of basement associated new insight into the boundary between Euiseong and Milyang Sub-basin.
The purpose of this study is to investigate ways to use Landsat TM data for geological mapping and minieralized area detection. The study was carried out in Kyongju-Pohang area where toseki and bentonite mines are distributed. Rock samples of 18 granites, andesites, toseki, betonites, sedimentary rocks and altered rocks in the study area were collected for the study. The radiometric measurtment of the rock samples were carried out with a radiometer in the laboratory and in the field. The Landsat TM bands 2,3,4,5,7 were used for the measurement. The radiometric characteristics of the sample were mainly processed by the principal component analysis. It was found that the pricipal component analysis of the radiometric characteristics of geologic materials is very useful for the detection of the alteration of rocks and grade of mineral contents. It is expected that the technique can be used in the future for the efficient exploration of minerals in this country and abroad.

The shear stress characteristics of landslide materials can be affected by various factors. We examined the shear stress characteristics of two different soils using ring-shear apparatus, in which saturation-consolidation-shearing speed can be easily controlled. This paper presents (i) shear stress-time characteristics, (ii) shear stress depending on normal stress and shear speed and (iii) shear stress as a function of shearing speed. Materials used in this paper were the Nakdong River sand and muds taken from Jinhae coastal area in Korea. Samples were prepared in three types: Sand (upper)-Sand (lower), Clay (upper)-Clay (lower) and Sand (upper)-Clay (lower). The upper and lower indicate the samples placed in upper and lower ring shear boxes, respectively. For given normal stresses (50 and 100 kPa) and shearing speed (0.1 mm/sec), we performed ring shear tests. Then the failure lines were determined in the second test. Last, we determined the shear stress characteristics depending on different shearing speeds, such as 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100 mm/sec. As a result, we found that shear stress characteristics are strongly dependent on above three factors. The shear stress of Sand (upper)-Clay (lower) is smaller than that of Sand (upper)-Sand (lower), but slightly larger than that of Clay (upper)-Clay (lower). The shear stress is also characterized by grain crushing and wetting process at slip surface.
Recently it has been frequently reported arsenic contamination of geologic origin in groundwater. The iron-impregnated ranular activated carbon (Fe-GAC) was developed for effective removal of arsenic from groundwater n the study. Fe-GACs were prepared by impregnating iron compounds into a supporting medium (GAC) with 0.05 M iron nitrate solution. The materials were used in arsenic adsorption isotherm tests to know the effect of iron impregnation time, batch kinetic tests to understand the influence of pH, and column tests to evaluate for the preliminary operation of water treatment system. The results showed that the minimum twelve hours of impregnation time were required for making the Fe-GAC with sufficient iron content for arsenic removal, confirmed by a high arsenic adsorption capacity evaluated in the isotherm tests. Most of the impregnated iron compounds were iron hydroxynitrate $Fe_4(OH)_{11}NO_3{\cdot}2H_2O$ but a mall quantity of hematite was also identified in X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis. The batch isotherms of Fe-GAC for arsenic adsorption were well explained by Langmuir than Freundlich model and the iron contents of Fe-GAC have positive linear correlations on logarithmic plots with Freundlich distribution coefficients ($K_F$ and Langmuir maximum adsorption capacities ($Q_m$. The results of kinetic experiments suggested hat Fe-GAC had he excellent arsenic adsorption capacities regardless of all pH conditions except for pH 11 and could be used a promising adsorbents for groundwater arsenic removal considering the general groundwater pH range of 6-8. The pseudo-second order model, based on the assumption that the ate-limiting step might be chemisorption, provided the best correlation of the kinetic experimental data and explained the arsenic adsorption system f Fe-GAC. The column test was conducted to valuate the feasibility of Fe-GAC use and the operation parameters in arsenic groundwater treatment system. The parameters obtained from the column test were the retardation actor of 482.4 and the distribution coefficient of 581.1 L/mg which were similar values of 511.5-592.5 L/mg acquired from Freundlich batch isotherm model. The results of this study suggested that Fe-GAC could be used as promising adsorbent of arsenic removal in a small groundwater supply system with water treatment facility.
