  • In this study, the spatiotemporal surface temperature changes were analyzed in the Korean peninsula. The surface temperature variation was estimated using the split window method and NOAA/AVHRR data in 1991, 1995 and 2000. The ranges of differences in temperature between day time and night time were $3-15^{\circ}C$ around the peninsula. The differences in seasonal variations and yearly fluctuations in big cities were lower than those in rural areas and showed clearly the effects of the urbanization. The characteristics of urban heat affects were further determined based on the day and night time temperature comparison on Busan metropolitan area between these periods. Finally, the future use of this technology was suggested for the urban environmental planning.

  • By analyzing the sea surface temperature (SST), chlorophyll ${\alpha}$, zooplankton and Orview/SeaWiFS satellite data in the Korean Waters from 1999 to 2001, we studied the seasonal and annual variation of chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentration and zooplankton biomass. Sea surface temperature was fluctuated with the typical seasonal variation in the waters of temperate zone. Chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentration and zooplankton biomass were high in spring and autumn. Year to year fluctuations on annual averaged chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentrations in Korean Waters in the spring from 1999 to 2001 were decreased continuously. On the other hand, the estimated chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentrations derived from SeaWiFS ocean color data were lower than the measured sea surface chlorophyll a in the Korean Waters.

  • Genomic DNA samples isolated from two geographical crayfish (Cambaroides similis) populations in the inland of the Korean Peninsula, at Jeonju (Jeonju crayfish; JJC) and Jeongup (Jeongup crayfish; JUe), were PCR-amplified repeatedly. The six arbitrarily selected primers OPC-03, OPC-06, OPC-09, URP-02, URP07 and URP-09 generated the common, specific, and polymorphic fragments. The sizes of DNA fragments also varied widely, from 100 bp - 2,600 bp. Here, 521 fragments were identified in the JJC population, and 354 in the JUC population: 6 primers generated 60 specific fragments (60/521 fragment, 11.5%) in the JJC population, and 90 (90/354 fragments, 25.4%) in the JUC population. These primers produced 42 polymorphic fragments (8.1%) in the DC population, and 18 (5.1%) in the mc population. Especially these results demonstrate that the primers detected numerous specific fragments. Especially, the decamer primer OPC-06 generated inter-population-common DNA fragments, approximately 400 and 800 bp, respectively, in both the JJC and JUC populations. The universal primer URP-02 also generated inter-population-identical DNA fragments, approximately 350 bp and 600 bp, between the two geographical crayfish populations. Based on the average bandsharing values of all samples, the bandsharing value of individuals within the JJC population was much higher than in the JUC population. The bandsharing value between individuals no. 10 and no. 15 was 0.683, which was the highest between the two geographical populations. The dendrogram obtained by the six primers indicates two genetic clusters: cluster I (CRAYFISH 01 - CRAYFISH II), and cluster 2 (CRAYFISH 12 - CRAYFISH 22). The genetic distance between the two geographical populations ranged from 0.053 to 0.605. Ultimately, the longest genetic distance displaying significant molecular differences was found to exist between individuals in the two crayfish populations, between individuals CRAYFISH no. 02 of Jeonju and CRAYFTSH no. 15 of Jeongup (genetic distance = 0.605).

  • Researches on method for quantitative analysis applied with decision-making in consideration of variation in risk factors based on GIS(Geographic Information System) concluded as follows. Firstly, by way of decision-making in consideration of variation in risk factors, quantitative analysis performed for the existing route was applied to the new route, which would bring about reliable criteria in route planning and basic design stage. Secondly, horizontal and vertical alignment were easily available out of GIS for relatively speedy design and analysis with three dimensional alignment by decision-making in route planning. Thirdly, automation of route alignment is possible by utilizing quantitative evaluation system established in this research so that a risk analysis can be carried out in a relatively short time. Therefore it will eventually contribute to further development of road design technology.

  • In this study, we propose Linktable based on extended TB-Tree(LTB-Tree) which can improve the performance of existing TB (Trajectory-Bundle)-tree proposed for indexing the trajectory of moving objects in GIS Applications. In addition, in order to evaluate proposed indexing scheme, we take into account as follows. At first, we select existing R*-tree, TB-tree, and LTB-tree as the subject of performance evaluation. Secondly, we make use of random data set and real data set as experimental data. Thirdly, we evaluate the performance with respect to the variation of size of memory buffer by considering the restriction of available memory of a given system. Fourth, we test them by using the experimental data set with a variation of data distribution. Finally, we think over insertion and retrieval performance of trajectory query and range query as experimental measures. The experimental results show that the proposed indexing scheme, LTB-tree, gains better performance than traditional other schemes with respect to the insertion and retrieval of trajectory query.

  • Airborne or spaceborne remote sensing can increase the efficiency of seabed material surveys compared with field surveying using a vessel. For the same seabed material, the optical remote sensing image shows variation in the reflectance depending on the water depth, which is due to the absorption and scattering by the water column. This study suggests a correction procedure to use the hyperspectral image for seabed material analysis. The study is conducted in the coastal area from Sacheonjin Port to Gyungpo Beach in Gangwon-do. The hyperspectral image is acquired using the CASI-1500 sensor. The diffuse attenuation coefficient is estimated for each band through regression models between the water reflectance and depth. Then, the coefficient is applied to each band of the image. As a result, the completely corrected image can be interpreted for a deeper area, although the interpretable area is very shallow without water column correction. Additionally, the water column corrected image shows decreased variation of reflectance with various water depths.

  • Seventeen Chinese indigenous pig breeds and three introduced pig breeds had been carried out by means of vertical polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). According to the results, eight serum protein loci were highly polymorphic except Pi-2 and Cp. The polymorphism information content (PIC) of Hpx was the highest (0.5268), while that of Cp was the lowest (0.0257). The population genetic variation index showed that about 84% genetic variation existed in the population, and the rest of 16% distributed between the populations. The genetic variation of Yimeng black pig and Duroc were the highest and the lowest, respectively. The genetic variation of Chinese indigenous pig breeds was much more than that of exotic groups. Genetic distance results showed that Chinese indigenous pig breeds were classified into four groups with the three introduced pig breeds clustered into another group. The results also supported the geographic distribution of Chinese indigenous pig breeds in certain extent.

  • Typical of large, oligotrophic lakes, Lake H$\ddot{o}$vsg$\ddot{o}$l, Mongolia, exhibits complex morphometry which should support a spatially heterogeneous community of benthic macroinvertrates. The lake also exhibits a broad range of land uses. Based on the variation in land use and complex physical habitat of the lake (e.g. substrate variation and presence of affluent streams in bays), we asked two questions. First, does density of total benthic macroinvertebrates vary between different bays in Lake H$\ddot{o}$vsg$\ddot{o}$l? Second, does density of individual benthic taxa vary by bay? Samples collected in 1997, the last year for benthic sampling of the lake, were designed to test for variation in macroinvertebrate density between bays and can now be used to establish baseline variation in density for future studies. A total of 56 Ponar grab samples were analyzed from six bays in Lake H$\ddot{o}$vsg$\ddot{o}$l. Results of a general linear model analysis of variance showed that total density of macroinvertebrates varied only slightly between bays of the lake, but that most individual taxa showed significant variation between bays. Variation in density for most taxa was linked to substrate composition rather than other geographic or physical variables in the lake. Recent increases in grazing intensity and ecotourism along the shores should be managed to reduce the nutrient load into the lake to avoid impairment of the benthic biota of this unique, ancient ecosystem.
