  • In accordance with Madrid and Kyoto Protocols, a 10kW wind turbine installed about 625m away from the King Sejong Station in the Antarctica has been in operation successfully. The current location of the wind turbine has different geographic surroundings from the previous candidate site considered in 2005 and that makes re-evaluation of wind resource at the current site including geographic effects necessary. Especially, strong wind flow derived by steep and complex terrain is dominant in the Antarctica so that computational flow analysis is required. The wind rose measured at the previous and current installation location are identical with strong meteorological correlation but prevailing directions of wind power density are different because of local wind acceleration due to complex terrain. Numerical analysis explains which effects brings this discordance between the two sites, and a design guideline required for additional wind turbine installation has been secured.

  • The facility location in designing a supply chain network is an important decision problem that gives form, structure, and shape to the entire supply chain system. Location problems involve determining the location, number, and size of the facilities to be used. The optimization of these location decisions requires careful attention to the inherent trade-offs among service time, inventory costs, facility cost, transportation costs. This paper presents a strategy that provides the best locations of distribution centers using GIS(Geographical Information System) assuming the limitation of delivery time. To get the best strategy of the location of distribution centers, we use the new loss functions as a penalty when the delivery time is violated

  • The interest in renewable energy which can reduce greenhouse gas emissions has risen in the world including Korea. In Korea, solar energy generation accounts for a major percentage of electricity production using renewable energy and the solar power plants have been increasingly installed in Korea. The problem is, however, that researches on the location selection of solar power plants are unreasonably insufficient although the photovoltaic technology of the domestic solar power plants has been evolving. Thus, advanced solar energy technology could not be fully used. What is more, the indiscriminate installation of the solar power plants seriously damages the nature environment. In this study, conditions of the power plants location are analyzed in consideration of the social, cultural, environmental, economic factors and the optimum location is selected by visualizing and weighing various factors through the analytic hierarchy process. This study shows that the problem caused by the indiscriminate installation of a solar power plant could be prevented by determining the location after considering the influence of several factors. This paper would be helpful not only for the selection of location for solar plant installation in progress, but also for taking follow-up measures on the existing solar power plants placed wrongly.

  • With the recent development of advanced GIS and complex spatial analysis technologies, the more sophisticated technologies are being required to support the advanced knowledge for solving geographical or spatial problems in various decision support systems. In addition, necessity for research on scientific crime investigation and forensic science is increasing particularly at law enforcement agencies and investigation institutions for efficient investigation and the prevention of crimes. There are active researches on geographic profiling to predict the base location such as criminals' residence by analyzing the spatial patterns of serial crimes. However, as previous researches on geographic profiling use simply statistical methods for spatial pattern analysis and do not apply a variety of spatial and temporal analysis technologies on serial crimes, they have the low prediction accuracy. Therefore, this paper identifies the typology the spatio-temporal patterns of serial crimes according to spatial distribution of crime sites and temporal distribution on occurrence of crimes and proposes STA-BLP(Spatio-Temporal Analysis based Base Location Prediction) algorithm which predicts the base location of serial crimes more accurately based on the patterns. STA-BLP improves the prediction accuracy by considering of the anisotropic pattern of serial crimes committed by criminals who prefer specific directions on a crime trip and the learning effect of criminals through repeated movement along the same route. In addition, it can predict base location more accurately in the serial crimes from multiple bases with the local prediction for some crime sites included in a cluster and the global prediction for all crime sites. Through a variety of experiments, we proved the superiority of the STA-BLP by comparing it with previous algorithms in terms of prediction accuracy.

  • The research investigates the identification of necessary geographic information needed by forest fire suppression helicopter pilots, and the ways to acquire the required information from public institutions. Firefighting helicopter pilots demand 7 physical geographic and 13 human geographic data. Applying the geographical information acquired from Korean public institutions, the following 15 characteristics (3 physical geographic, 12 human geographic) can be found: altitude and highlands, river, high population and urban areas, roads, national park and state boundaries, fuel re-supply facilities, freshwater areas, cultural assets, (LPG)gas charging stations, gas stations, ammunition storage areas, ground power cables, and steel towers. Within the database of physical geography, there is a need for improvement on bird habitat details. Also, the availability of visibility, wind directions, and wind velocity data is limited and therefore requires refining. The location of refueling areas can be obtained by applying information received from institutions to the GIS spatial analysis.

  • As economic cooperation and exchanges between North and South Korea have been glowing much more than before, the demand for geographic information on North Korea is recently increasing. In fact, there is no specific method to be provided with geographic information on North Korea. In this regard, the study searched a method to collect geographic information on North Korea by using the high spatial resolution satellite image. In order to produce its best result, the study collected the geographic information on the case study area and ensured the location accuracy. This study produced total 52 items of geographic information on North Korea. Horizontal and vertical errors of stereo image, which are 4.6m and 0.9m respectively, showed high accuracy. In addition, even though the horizontal error of single image is 9m, which is bigger than that of stereo image, there is no doubt that it can be used as basic data for North Korean studies and related projects.

  • Wireless ad-hoc routing has been extensively studied and many clever schemes have been proposed over the last several years. One class of ad-hoc routing is geographic routing where each intermediate node independently selects the next hop using the given location information of destination. Geographic routing, which eliminates the overhead of route request packet flooding, is scalable and suitable for large scale ad hoc networks. However, geographic routing may select the long detour paths when there are voids between a source and a destination. In this paper, we propose a novel geographic routing approach called Geographic Landmark Routing(GLR). GLR recursively discovers the intermediate nodes called landmarks and constructs sub-paths that connect the subsequent landmarks. Simulation results on various network topologies show that GLR significantly improves the performance of geographic routing.

  • Since the 1980's the school of Busan metropolitan city has been converted into the other land-use such as high-rise apartment houses, commercial and office buildings. School facilities are available to locate in green area due to not restricted by land use zone. And the location of school facilities were closely related with the school district, distribution of neighborhood unit, safety of students, and so on. The purpose of this study is to understand the location characteristic of school - moved sites in Busan metropolitan city.
