  • This study aims to analyse the spatial characteristics and to draw the declining areas from the whole area of Chung-Cheong Province. For this purpose, the temporal and spatial conditions by the urban decline diagnosis indexes are utilized. Additionally, the spatial autocorrelation method was applied for extraction of those areas. The spatial autocorrelation method is one of the methods on exploring spatial characteristics and considering the spatial factors. We also adopted the concepts of economics and then discovered the characteristics of deprivation areas. In applying this method, the positively valued areas were classified as the complementary areas, and the negatively valued areas as the substitutional areas. The findings show the declining areas and the growing areas caused by the growth of periphery. This study supports the regeneration plan of Chung-Cheong Province in extracting depressed or activated areas and explaining the characteristics of those areas.

  • The spatial distribution characteristics and patterns of geographic features in space can be understood through a variety of analysis techniques. The scale is one of most important factors in spatial analysis techniques. This study is aimed at identifying the characteristics of spatial data with a coarser spatial resolution and finding procedures for spatial resolution in operational scale. To achieve these objectives, this study selected LANSAT TM imagery for Sunchon Bay, a coastal wetland for a study site, applied the indices for representing scale characteristics with resolution, and compared those indices. Local variance and fractal dimension developed by previous studies were applied to measure the textual characteristics. In this study, Moran s I was applied to measure spatial pattern change of variance data which were generated from the process of coarser resolution. Drawing upon the Moran s I of variancedata was optimum technique for analysing spatial structure than those of previous studies (local variance and fractal dimension). When the variance data represents maximum Moran´s I at certainly resolution, spatial data reveals maximum change at that resolution. The optimum resolution for spatial data can be explored by applying these results.

  • Since 1995, agropolitan cities have been created, in order to pursue the balanced development between urban cities and its surrounding rural counties. However, the inequality of regional level that was caused by indiscreet development has become the ever-serious problems recently. Therefore, this study aims to analyze regional characteristics and patterns for setting up the sustainable spatial planning. Firstly, the regional characteristics were summarized by five factors; development-oriented factor, agricultural factor, living environmental factor, rice growing, fruit gardening factor. The regional patterns were classified with five patterns using cluster analysis; orchard farming, farming of medium and small size, small stagnation, under urbanization, mixed urban-rural properties, and industry of southeastern seashore. Accuracy of the results by discrimination analysis showed that pattern II, V, and VI were confidence level of 100%, but the others had nearly 90% confidence level.

  • We investigated habitat characteristics of the yellow-throated marten Martes flavigula (Carnivora : Mustelidae) using geographic information system (GIS). GPS coordinates of the target mammal traces and seven habitat factors were used for the GIS analysis. The Odaesan National Park (ONP) is selected as a study area for GIS analysis of the habitat characteristics. According to the GIS analysis of whole area of ONP, main forest type was broadleaf trees which occupy 72% of forests. Trees of 4th to 6th age-calss account for 93% of the ONP forests. The mean elevation and slope of ONP was 901 m and $22.1^{\circ}$, respectively. According to the GIS analysis of M. flavigula habitats in ONP, most M. flavigula traces were found in borad-leaf forests and coniferous forests which are main forest types of ONP. In addition, the yellow-throated marten recorded a relatively high appearance rate of 7% in unstocked forests, which account for much less than 1% of the area of ONP. Most of the marten traces were found in forests with trees of 4th to 6th age-classes. The traces were found in the forest types in higher elevation (1,080.3 m) and lower slope ($15.0^{\circ}$) on average, compared with those of ONP. Appearance rate of the marten traces was 96% in range less than 600 m from the water. The traces were frequently found in areas far distantly beyond 1,400 m range from human residental areas and cultivated areas.

  • Gibberella fujikuroi species complex (GFSC) was isolated from rice (Oryza sativa L.) seed samples from ten Asian countries and investigated for incidence of GFSC, molecular characteristics, and pathogenicity. Regardless of geographic origin, GFSC was detected with incidences ranging from 3% to 80%. Four species, Fusarium fujikuroi, F. concentricum, F. proliferatum, and F. verticillioides, were found to show an association with rice seeds, with F. fujikuroi being the predominant species. In phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequences, no relationship was found between species, isolates, and geographic sources of samples. Unidentified fragments of the ${\beta}$-tubulin gene were observed in ten isolates of F. fujikuroi and F. verticillioides. With the exception of three isolates of F. fujikuroi, F. fujikuroi, F. proliferatum, and F. verticillioides were found to have FUM1 (the fumonisin biosynthetic gene); however, FUM1 was not found in isolates of F. concentricum. Results of pathogenicity testing showed that all isolates caused reduced germination of rice seed. In addition, F. fujikuroi and F. concentricum caused typical symptoms of bakanae, leaf elongation and chlorosis, whereas F. proliferatum and F. verticillioides only caused stunting of seedlings. These findings provide insight into the characteristics of GFSC associated with rice seeds and might be helpful in development of strategies for management of bakanae.

  • The recent occurrence of vacant houses in urban areas is a remarkable social problem. One of the physical declines, the occurrence of vacant houses, accelerates various social and economic declines, such as a decline in population and a slump in the commercial district. Vacant houses have regional characteristics and spatial influence, and it is necessary to approach them locally in order to grasp the exact status of vacant houses. Therefore, in this study, the effect of urban decline on the occurrence of vacant homes was examined by region using global Moran's I and Geographic Weighted Regression(GWR) model. As a result of the analysis, there were spatial autocorrelation and heterogeneity in the occurrence of vacant houses in each eup·myeon·dong, Busan metropolitan city. In addition, there is a difference in the influence of each variable of urban decline on the occurrence of vacant houses, and even the same variable of urban decline has different effects on the occurrence of vacant houses in different regions. Therefore, it is expected that a more efficient vacant home management plan can be presented if the GWR model is used to analyze the coefficient values differentiated by region and categorize the occurrence of vacant houses.

  • This study was carried out to investigate geographic variation in needle characteristics of Pinus densiflora, one of the most economically important tree species in Korea. Needles were collected from 35 natural populations and their morphological and anatomical characteristics were studied. ANOVA showed statistically significant differences among populations as well as among individuals within populations in needle length, needle width, number of stomata row, density of stomata in $0.25mm^{2}$, number of serrations in 0.5mm, and number of resin ducts. In all these traits, variance components among individuals within populations were larger than those among populations. The density of stomata in $0.25mm^{2}$ increased as the latitudes and elevations of the populations increased, while the number of serrations in 0.5mm decreased as the decrease of latitudes and elevations. The number of resin ducts was higher in inland populations than in coastal populations. The resin duct index appeared to be higher in western populations than in eastern populations. Cluster analysis based on morphological characteristics divided populations into three groups. The third group was composed of populations selected from the Taebaek mountains. The number of serrations in 0.5mm of this group was lower than that of other two groups, while the density of stomata in $0.25mm^{2}$ was higher.

  • Temporal and spatial characteristics of the frequency of several weather types and the change in air pollutant concentrations according to these weather types were analyzed over a decade (2007-2016) in seven major cities and a remote area in Korea. This analysis was performed using hourly (or daily) observed data of weather types (e.g., mist, haze, fog, precipitation, dust, and thunder and lighting) and air pollutant criteria ($PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$, $O_3$, $NO_2$, CO, and $SO_2$). Overall, the most frequent weather type across all areas during the study period was found to be mist (39%), followed by precipitation (35%), haze (17%), and the other types (${\leq}4%$). In terms of regional frequency distributions, the highest frequency of haze (26%) was in Seoul (especially during winter and May-June), possibly due to the high population and air pollutant emission sources, while that of precipitation (47%) was in Jeju (summer and winter), due to its geographic location with the sea on four sides and a very high mountain. $PM_{10}$ concentrations for dust and haze were significantly higher in three cities (up to $250{\mu}g/m^3$ for dust in Incheon), whereas those for the other four types were relatively lower. The concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$ and its major precursor gases ($NO_2$ and $SO_2$) were higher (up to $69{\mu}g/m^3$, 48 ppb, and 16 ppb, respectively, for haze in Incheon) for haze and/or dust than for the other weather types. On the other hand, there were no distinct differences in the concentrations of $O_3$ and CO for the weather types. The overall results of this study confirm that the frequency of weather types and the related air quality depend on the geographic and environmental characteristics of the target areas.

  • Market segmentation is the act of dividing a market into distinct groups of buyers who might require separate products and/or marketing mixes. For the selection of target markets which is the first stage for the development of international market, international market segmentation should be preceded and objective criteria(variables) for the markets segmentation are necessory. Criteria of international market segmentation for passenger car are constituted with consumer characteristics, characteristics of consumer response, manufacturer characteristics and environment. Criteria of consumer characteristics include geographic variables(nation), G.N.P per capita and so on, criteria of characteristics of consumer response contain the number of possessed car, the number of registered car, the number of imported car and the number of possessed car per 1,000 persons.
