  • Tin mineralizations in South Korea have been found only in the Ulchin and the Sangdong areas. The Wangpiri and the Yuchang Sn pegmatites appear to be in close spatial and genetical relation to the Wangpiri granitoid in the Ulchin area, and the Soonkyeong Sn pegmatite be in close association with the Nonggeori granites in the Sangdong area from geochemical viewpoint. The electron-microprobe analysis of muscovite, biotite, tourmaline and cassiterite from the granitoids and pegmatites in the Ulchin and the Sangdong areas has revealed a distinct differences of geochemical compositions. The Wangpiri and the Yuchang Sn pegmatites show an enrichment of MnO and a depletion of $TiO_2$, FeO and MgO in comparison with the Soonkyeong Sn pegmatite. This result coincides with the geochemical compositions of granitoid rocks in these areas. Enrichment of MnO and depletion of $TiO_2$ FeO and MgO are characteristic in muscovite, biotite and tourmaline of pegmatites compared with those of granitoids. These geochemical differences of muscovite, biotite and tourmaline between granitoids and pegmatites in these areas implies that pegmatites are more fractionated than granitoids.

  • To understand the geochemical characteristics of Gomso Bay, which features extensive Manila clam, we measured various geochemical parameters, organic matter, and trace metals (Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, Cr, Hg, As and Fe) of intertidal and subtidal surface sediments in 2011. The surface sediments consisted of sedimentary facies including gravel (0.21%), sand (61.1%), silt (32.1%), and clay (6.5%). The chemical oxygen demand (COD) and acid volatile sulfide (AVS) values in most areas were below sediment quality criteria (COD, $20mg/g{\cdot}dry$; AVS, $0.2mg/g{\cdot}dry$). Trace metals in the surface sediments were below pollution thresholds, except for As (morderately polluted). Sediment quality was evaluated using the trace metal pollution load index (PLI) and ecological risk index (ERI), which showed that sediments were generally not polluted and at low risk; however, values along the outer bay were higher. We expect these results will be valuable for sustainable aquaculture prodution and environmental management in Gomso Bay.

  • In order to evaluate the relationship between geochemical characteristics and benthic facies of the sediments from the Oenaro Island where red tide proliferation is first observed every year including this year, surface and short multiple core sediment samples were analyzed in terms of geochemical and benthic facies variation. The contents of organic carbon, carbonate, and sulfide gas were relatively low. The variation in C/N ratios, which indicate nature of organic carbon, suggested that the organic carbon recorded in the study area is composed of mixtures of marine and terrigenous organic matters. The concentration of minor elements found at the surface and multiple core sediment samples were also low as well as the enrichment factors(Ef) for the seven heavy metals indicated that the sediment of this area is not polluted significantly. The macrobenthic faunal community comprised 61 species, and their mean density was 708 ind./m2. Polychaete worms were major taxa of this benthic community. A crustacean amphipod, Melita sp. was the most abundant species accounted for 20.7% of total abundance, and the small polychaetes such as Heteromastus filiformis, Paralacydonia poradoxa, Magelona japonica and Sigambra tentaculata were the next dominant species. The macrobenthos around the Oenaro Island were more diverse and abundant than that in Gamak Bay. The benthic communities in the study area sustained somewhat different species composition based on the cluster analysis and the MDS ordination. The benthic community health condition at three stations seemed to be unbalanced, and slightly polluted based on the biological index such as BPI and BC. There was no clear relationship between the geochemistry characteristic and the benthic faunal facies attributed by the micro-algal blooms in this coastal area.

  • We attempted to show the evolution of the magma and the geochemical characteristics of dikes and dike swarms by using the petrographic and geochemical data from 287 dikes, SE Korea. The dikes can be divided into mafic, intermediate, and felsic dikes in the field. And each of them is subdivided into three groups, two groups, and two groups, respectively. The group (I) among the mafic dikes most pervasively occurs and are distributed in both sides of the Yeonil Tectonic Line (YIL), which petrographic and geochemical characteristics are the same. These facts thus, strongly support the results of the previous studies which showed that they were intruded contemporaneously and that YTL was a main tectonic line which restricted the crustal clockwise rotation during the Early Miocene. The geochemical characteristics are discriminated according to the seven groups divided petrographically. The mafic, intermediate and felsic dikes belong to basalt and basaltic andesite, andesite and facile, and rhyolite, respectively, and the magmas mostly belong to calc-alkaline series. The geochemical data indicate that there were the fractional crystallizations of olivine, clinopyroxene, and plagioclase in the mafic dikes. And the content of characteristic elements and tectonic discrimination diagrams show that the dikes were formed from the magma related to the subduction of plate and that the tectonic setting was related to orogenic volcanic arc.

  • It is generally well known that Quaternary is characteristic geologically in terms of glacial and interglacial repeats and their associated unconformity formation. This paper deals with the first finding of the characteristic and significant meaningful unconformity between Holocene and late Pleistocene, which implies submergence and emergence of the tidal sedimentary basin along the western coastal zone of Korea during interglacial stage(IOS-5e) and glacial time(IOS-2). The stratigraphy of intertidal deposits in the Haenam Bay, western coast of Korea shows two depositional sequence units (Unit I of Holocene and Unit II of late Pleistocene) bounded by an erosional surface of disconformity. The disconformity is related to the latest Pleistocene sea-level lowstands (probably during the LGM). The Unit II is interpreted as intertidal deposit showing tidal sedimentary structures and crab burrow ichnology and has two parts (the upper part and the lower part) showing different lithology and character. The upper part of Unit II shows characteristic subaerial exposure features (emergence) and its related lithology. Such subaerially exposed upper part (more or less 4m to 5m in thickness) is characterized by yellow-brownish sediment color, cryoturbat-ed structure, crab burrow ichnofacies and high value of shear strength. Geochemical and clay mineral analyses of the upper part sediments also indicate subaerial exposure and weathering. In particular, very high value of magnetic susceptibility of the upper part in comparison to that of the lower part is interpreted as pedogenetic weathering during the subaerial exposure period.

  • To provide better insights into the factors and processes regulating the geochemical behavior of airborne lead (Pb), we have investigated several important aspects of its distribution characteristics using the data collected from the Kyung Hee University-Suwon Campus during 1989 through 1994. Although the Pb data in the area reflected the effects of many anthropogenic activities ongoing in the area, the data were quite useful to assess the geochemical facets affecting the temporal distributions of lead as well as particulate matter (PM). The analysis of these data indicated that the Pb patterns were characteristic of enriched Pb levels during odd-numbered years relative to even-numbered years, while those of PM were exhibiting pronouncingly different patterns. Despite many similarities and differences found between year-to-year distribution patterns, of Pb data, it was possible to discuss the facts associated with relatively high concentrations in the years 1991 and 1993 via normalization of Pb against PM data. According to this procedure, we were able to conclude that relative enrichment in Pb levels during 1991 was due to enhanced input of PM, while that of the year 1993 came from more chemically-oriented processes such as active adsorptive scavenging of Pb onto the PM surface. Based on our comparative analysis of the size-fractionated PM and Pb data sets, we propse that two distinctive mechanisms that are both of phyical (1991) and chemical nature (1993) exerted controls over the observed distribution patterns of airborne Pb in the atmosphere of Suwon.

  • This study aims to identify the mineraloical and petrographical characteristics of caprock from drilling cores of Pohang basin as a potential $CO_2$ storage site. Experiments and modeling were conducted in order to investigate the geochemical and mineralogical caprock effects of carbon dioxide. A series of autoclave experiments were conducted to simulate the interaction in the $scCO_2$-caprock-brine using a high pressure and temperature cell at $50^{\circ}C$ and 100 bar. Geochemical and mineralogical alterations after 15 days of $scCO_2$-caprock-brine sample reactions were quantitatively examined by XRD, XRF, ICP-OES investigation. Results of mineralogical studies, together with petrographic data of caprock and data on the physicochemical parameters of brine were used for geochemical modeling. Modelling was carried out using the The Geochemist's Workbench 11.0.4 geochemical simulator. Results from XRD analysis for caprock sample showed that major compositional minerals are quartz, plagioclase, and K-feldspar, and muscovite, pyrite, siderite, calcite, kaolinite and montnorillonite were included on a small scale. Results from ICP-OES analysis for brine showed that concentration of $Ca^{2+}$, $Na^+$, $K^+$ and $Mg^{2+}$ increased due to dissolution of plagioclase, K-feldspar and muscovite. Results of modeling for the period of 100 years showed that the recrystallization of kaolinite, dawsonite and beidellite, at the expense of plagioclase and K-feldspar is characteristic. Volumes of newly precipitation minerals and minerals passing into brine were balanced, so the porosity remained nearly unchanged. Experimental and modeling results indicate the interaction between caprock and $scCO_2$ during geologic carbon sequestration can exert significant impacts in brine pH and solubility/stability of minerals.

  • A characteristic mineralogical zonal distribuion is observed in a large scale(whole ore- body) small scales(handy specimens). They show similar chemical variations: most of elements except CaO were supplied by hydrothermal fluids to form skarns. Garnets occuring in the pyroxene-garnet skarn have a wide range of chemical composition ranging from andradite to grossularite, while individual grains of the garnets also show a similar zonation of chemical composition varied between grossularite and andradite. Highly contained Mo-bearing scheelites are generally concentrated in the central part of the Sang- dong skarn orebody. Similarly, some large grains of scheelite show a nice zonation due to different contents of Mo, highly enriched in the core of the scheelite crystal. This geochemical similarity in the large scale and small scales suggests the Sangdong skarn formation was achieved under a certain chemical environment, and detailed studies on a small scale texture could be a clue to understand a whole ore deposit.

  • Hyperspectral image divides VNIR region to over 200 bands which can show continuous spectrum with 10 nm spectral resolution. This property is useful in geology where a spectral feature which is decided by chemical compositions and crystalline structures is recorded well. While this field has been studied variously in foreign countries, the studies are in the early stage in Korea. In this study, characteristic materials associated with AMD were classified by using EO-1 HYPERION data which is a spaceborne hyperspectral image and topographical map and DEM and geochemical map were analyzed in conjunction with the image in order to examine that classified minerals are secondary minerals by AMD.

  • Mineralogical and geochemical studies on some pyrophyllite deposits in Milyang area, Kyeongnam Province (Milyang and Sungjin mine) were carried out in order to investigate dispersion patterns of chemical elements in altered volcanic wallrocks, and to interpret genetic environments of the pyrophyllite deposits. Cretaceous andesitic and tuffaceous rocks, and pyrophyllite ore specimens were collected from the dumps and drilling cores. Andesitic wallrocks were grouped as unaltered and altered rocks in the order of pyrophyllitization. Vertical dispersion patterns and relative mobilities of chemical elements in volcanic wallrocks were discussed. Geochemical environment in the Milyang area is characterized by the occurrence of boron minerals such as dumortierite coexisting with pyrophyllite ores, and tourmaline in granitic rocks. Unaltered andesitic rocks are mainly composed of plagioclase, pyroxene and hornblende, and were propylitized and saussuritized. Altered andesitic rocks are bleached and consist of quartz, sericite, pyrophyllite, kaolinite, chlorite and disseminated pyrite. Pyrophyllite ores are mainly composed of quartz, pyrophyllite, dumortierite, dissemianted pyrite and some diaspore. Enrichment of $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, LOI (loss on ignition), As and Cr, and depletion of $K_2O$, $Na_2O$, CaO, MgO and total Fe are characteristic during alteration process. The REE patterns show that the pyrophyllite deposits could be originated from the continental margin volcanics. The $(La/Lu)_{cn}$ ratios of the pyrophyllite ores increase from 4.2~23.2 to 2.67~128.8 owing to strong acidic hydrothermal alteration. Vertical dispersion patterns of $Al_2O_3$, $K_2O$, $Na_2O$, CaO, MgO, $Fe_2O_3$ (total Fe), As, Au, Sb, Cr and Sr in the wallrocks show the location of orebodies. Particularly dispersion patterns of $Al_2O_3$ and Cr indicate the extension of orebodies. Anomalous distribution of Au, As and Sb in wallrocks shows potential for gold occurrence below the pyrophyllite deposits. Judging from the relative mobilities of elements in wallrocks, $Al_2O_3$ could be added from hydrothermal solution, and the silicified rone be formed from the excess of $SiO_2$.
