  • The costal reclamation construction is for making reclaimed land by dredging marine clay with seawater, and then bringing the dredged soil into the reclaimed land. During the process, the dredged soil in the reclaimed land undergoes the sedimentation-consolidation process. Among the processes, the consolidation is a very critical factor when planning reclaimed land because of its requiring time and settlement. In order to predict the requiring time and settlement, the Column test, which was suggested by Yano, has been usually used in the nation. However, the test method needs a very long time to identify the characteristic of sedimentation-consolidation of dredged soil. Therefore, in this study, in order to supplement the weakness of the Column test which needs such a long time, and in order to identify the characteristic of the sedimentation-consolidation for dredged soil in a short time, the Geo-centrifuge test was examined as an alternative method. The result considered that Geo-centrifuge test would be useful to identify the characteristic of sedimentation-consolidation for dredged soil efficiently.

  • Recently, the improvement of mechanical and theoretical issues in geo-centrifuge test enhances the applicability and accuracy of the test. Geo-centrifuge test is appropriate to simulate the behaviors of underground structures like tunnel, since tunnel interacts with the soil and/or rock around it and the test can embody the in-situ stress conditions effectively. In this study, the seismic behaviors of twin tunnel were analyzed based on geo-centrifuge test. Flexible segment to mitigate seismic acceleration were implemented in the model with thin and thick thickness. Based on the test results, it was found that flexible segment can decrease the peak acceleration generally, however, thin flexible segment was not able to reduce peak acceleration in short-period seismic wave. Thick flexible segment was more effective in case of high bedrock acceleration condition. Additionally, 3-dimensional numerical analysis was performed to verify the characteristics of seismic behavior and the effect of flexible segment. Consequently, the numerical analysis result showed good agreement with the test result.

  • Uplift phenomenon occurs when the apparent unit weight of buried geo-structures becomes smaller than that of the liquefied backfill due to the increase of an excess pore water pressure during strong earthquakes. In order to explain the relationship between the uplift displacement of the buried geo-structures and the increase of the excess pore water pressure ratio in backfill, dynamic centrifuge model tests are conducted. In the present study, primary and secondary factors against uplift behavior of the buried geo-structures are considered in the dynamic centrifuge model tests. Among these factors, the most important factors affecting the increase in the excess pore water pressure ratio were the ground water depth, the relative density of backfill, and the amplitude of the input acceleration, which were also largely affect the uplift amount of the buried geo-structures.

  • Characteristics of sedimentation of dredged soil is depended on the field condition and characteristics of dredged soil because dredged fill ground was formed by various field condition, sedimentation and self-weight consolidation process of dredged soil. Dredged fill ground is formed as separated sedimentary layer by characteristics of dredged soil. Therefore, it requires some special test method to consider a various field condition, characteristics of sedimentation and self-weight consolidation of dredged soil. In this study, in order to identify the characteristics of sedimentation of dredged soil with disposing velocity geo-centrifuge test and laser particle size analyzer were performed. As a results, river and mixed dredged soil show the separation sedimentation by soil particle size. And sedimentation of clayey dredged soil is parallel to the bottom surface of dredged fill space.

  • In this study, the centrifuge model tests were carried out to evaluate the stress concentration ratio, the deformation modes of piles and the ground movement in clay deposit improved by SCP and GCP piles with changing the replacement ratio(20%, 40%, 60%) under flexible loading. Based on the results obtained, it was shown that the stresses acting on GCP was larger than those acting on SCP with the same replacement ratio. It was evaluated that the average stress concentration ratio of soft clay ground improved by GCP was slightly larger than that of SCP when the replacement ratio is 40%. Only expansion failure occurred in GCP, whereas SCP showed the expansion and shear failure simultaneously.

  • A slipring or FORJ are usually adopted in order for power supply of Geo-centrifuge and input/output data acquisition. Since using slipring causes quite a lot electrical noise, an optical communication using FORJ becomes more general for data acquisition. Such data acquisition devices, however, require frequent maintenance and replacement due to deterioration by long term usage. DICT has set up a real-time wireless date acquisition system using wireless communication technology instead of FORJ. The system enables a remote measurement at any inertial acceleration field up to 100g level and provides as same performance as FORJ. The priority of this system is to use a normal modem substituting a special FORJ.

  • As the geotechnical technologies have grown, the size of civil structures has become bigger than before, thereby requiring large-scale geotechnical testing equipments which can evaluate the mechanical behavior of large size testing materials such as gravel, crushed rock and so on. These kind of large testing equipments are usually used to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of large size material which are applied in the large infra structures like dam, seashore structure, coastal landfill, soil-structure interaction and seismic response of large-scale structure. In this research, state-of-the-art information in the field of geotechnical engineering was collected and summarized for such large-scale experimental equipments as large-scale geo-centrifuge, large-scale triaxial testing machine, large-scale direct shear testing apparatus and large-scale oedometer.

  • Nonlinear dynamic analysis is performed to calculate the response of U-shaped cantilever retaining structure under seismic loading using the finite element (FE) analysis program OpenSees. A particular interest of the study is to evaluate whether the moment demand in the cantilever can be accurately predicted, because it is an important component in the seismic design. The numerical model is validated against a centrifuge test that was performed on cantilever walls with dry medium dense sand in backfill. Seismic analysis is performed using the pressure-dependent, multi-yield-surface, plasticity based soil constitutive model implemented in OpenSees. Normal springs are used to simulate the soil-structure interface. Comparison with centrifuge show that FE analysis provides good estimates of both the acceleration response and bending moment. The lateral earth pressure near the bottom of the wall is overestimated in the numerical model, but this does not contribute to a higher prediction of the moment.

  • The reliable seismic stability evaluation of the natural slopes and geotechnical structures has become a critical factor of the design. Pseudo-static or permanent displacement methods are typically employed to evaluate the seismic slope performance. In both methods, the effect of input ground motion on the sliding surface is ignored, and failure surface from the limit equilibrium method is used. For the assessment of the seismic sensitivity of failure surface, two-dimensional non-linear finite element analyses are performed. The performance of the finite element model was validated against centrifuge measurements. A parametric study with a range of input ground motion was performed, and numerical results were used to assess the influence of ground motion characteristics on the sliding surface. Based on the results, it is demonstrated that the characteristics of input ground motion have a significant influence on the location of the seismically induce failure surface. In addition to dynamic analysis, pseudo-static analyses were performed to evaluate the discrepancy. It is observed that sliding surfaces developed from pseudo-static and dynamic analyses are different. The location of the failure surface change with the amplitude and Tm of motion. Therefore, it is recommended to determine failure surfaces from dynamic analysis

  • In this study, the centrifuge tests and numerical analyses were performed to investigate the lateral flow behavior and stability of abutment when high filling was applied on the soft ground improved by SCP. The centrifuge model tests and numerical analyses were fulfilled in the case of the back of abutment filled by EPS (case 1) and soil (case 2), and the potentiometer was installed on the abutment and fill to measure the vertical and horizontal displacement at the top of abutment. As a result of the centrifugal tests, the horizontal displacement of abutment in the case 1 was 1.4cm that is almost coincide with the results of numerical and satisfy the allowable standard. On the other hand, the horizontal displacement of abutment in the case 2 was 12 cm that is 18% greater than that of numerical analysis and exceed the allowable standard. As a result of analysis, the maximum horizontal displacement of pile was 1.26 cm in case 1 that satisfies the criterion of allowable horizontal displacement (1.5 cm). In contrast, the maximum horizontal displacement of pile was 1.005 m in case 2 that greatly exceeds the allowable horizontal displacement.
