  • In order to create a national myth and be able to control international society, America with her short national history, used popular culture to accomplish these goals. The medium fit this purpose the best was the use of superhero characters based on comics. Born and developed from the 1930s through the 1960s, which could be seen as America's national crisis era, superhero characters were thorough advocates of American justice and was perfect for the role of spreading the legitimacy of American ideology. From the 1970s, superhero characters became part of movies and became even more influential through the Hollywood's massive film industry and the box office success. American ideology in superhero characters symbolically appeared in movie costumes. Starting with Superman and Batman, the very first and typical superhero characters' costumes work as metaphors for realization of American justice. After the 1980s, superheroes were newly developed through a genre called graphic novel and the most representative piece of this genre is Alan Moore's Watchmen. In the Watchmen, which was also turn into a movie in 2009, six changed superhero characters appear ranging from a non-human superhero, villain superhero, superhero with mental disorder and superhero with sexual impotency, the characters were never-seen-before superheroes with different aspects that connote introspection and philosophical ideology. The changed type of heroes and ideology became another form of heroes, and this brought changes to character costumes that were never considered before. The superhero costumes that used to symbolize America now express different types of superhero by borrowing exotic mythical elements, undressing, pastiche and daily life clothes. The superhero characters and their changes in costumes from Watchmen imply American popular culture's introspective tendency. Amongst these changes, we need to raise our critical vision towards popular culture.

  • In the theater-based movie industry, it is known that the diversity of movie consumption is hindered due to concentrated consumption. This study extends the existing discussions on the concentration of movie consumption in theaters to the concentration of online movie consumption. In addition, the study analyzes the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on movie consumption and the concentration thereof. For analysis, panel data for the period from 2012 through 2021 were collected by utilizing the box office data of the Korean Film Council. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the concentration of consumption by movie, country, and genre was higher in theaters than online. Further, the concentration of movie consumption has increased both in theaters and online until the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic. During the Covid-19 pandemic period, the size of consumption has decreased both in theaters and online, while the concentration of consumption by movie online has increased. The result of this study implies a need for policy-level efforts to convert the trend of consumption concentration for long-term development of the movie industry with secured diversity of movie consumption, and for this, the study suggests that the use of online media would be useful.

  • Due to the growth of internet data and the rapid development of internet technology, "big data" analysis is actively conducted to analyze enormous data for various purposes. Especially in recent years, a number of studies have been performed on the applications of text mining techniques in order to overcome the limitations of existing structured data analysis. Various studies on sentiment analysis, the part of text mining techniques, are actively studied to score opinions based on the distribution of polarity of words in documents. Usually, the sentiment analysis uses sentiment dictionary contains positivity and negativity of vocabularies. As a part of such studies, this study tries to construct sentiment dictionary which is customized to specific data domain. Using a common sentiment dictionary for sentiment analysis without considering data domain characteristic cannot reflect contextual expression only used in the specific data domain. So, we can expect using a modified sentiment dictionary customized to data domain can lead the improvement of sentiment analysis efficiency. Therefore, this study aims to suggest a way to construct customized dictionary to reflect characteristics of data domain. Especially, in this study, movie review data are divided by genre and construct genre-customized dictionaries. The performance of customized dictionary in sentiment analysis is compared with a common sentiment dictionary. In this study, IMDb data are chosen as the subject of analysis, and movie reviews are categorized by genre. Six genres in IMDb, 'action', 'animation', 'comedy', 'drama', 'horror', and 'sci-fi' are selected. Five highest ranking movies and five lowest ranking movies per genre are selected as training data set and two years' movie data from 2012 September 2012 to June 2014 are collected as test data set. Using SO-PMI (Semantic Orientation from Point-wise Mutual Information) technique, we build customized sentiment dictionary per genre and compare prediction accuracy on review rating. As a result of the analysis, the prediction using customized dictionaries improves prediction accuracy. The performance improvement is 2.82% in overall and is statistical significant. Especially, the customized dictionary on 'sci-fi' leads the highest accuracy improvement among six genres. Even though this study shows the usefulness of customized dictionaries in sentiment analysis, further studies are required to generalize the results. In this study, we only consider adjectives as additional terms in customized sentiment dictionary. Other part of text such as verb and adverb can be considered to improve sentiment analysis performance. Also, we need to apply customized sentiment dictionary to other domain such as product reviews.

  • We are developing a web-based movie recommender system that catches and reasons with user profiles and ratings to recommend movies. In the paper, we outline the current status of our implementation with particular emphasis on the mechanisms used to provide effective recommendations. Social recommender systems collect ratings of items from many individuals and use nearest-neighbor techniques to make recommendations to a user. However, these methods only depend on the ratings and ignore other useful information. Our primary concern is to provide an approach that can recommend the movies based on not only the user ratings but also the significant amount of other information that is available about the nature of each items - such as cast list or movie genre. We experimentally evaluate our approach and compare them to conventional social filtering, which suggests merits to our approach.

  • Collaborative filtering has been popular in commercial recommender systems, as it successfully implements social behavior of customers by suggesting items that might fit to the interests of a user. So far, most common method to find proper items for recommendation is by searching for similar users and consulting their ratings. This paper suggests a new similarity measure for movie recommendation that is based on genre interest, instead of differences between ratings made by two users as in previous similarity measures. From extensive experiments, the proposed measure is proved to perform significantly better than classic similarity measures in terms of both prediction and recommendation qualities.

  • Many researchers have analyzed the relationship between the financial success patterns of a motion picture and many other factors, such as the production cost, marketing, stars, awards, reviews, genre, and rating. Through these studies, many researchers and investors concluded that big budgets to make a blockbuster movie can serve as an insurance policy to meet their ROI; thus the box office is dominated by blockbuster movies. High-budget blockbuster movies are more likely to receive attention because these movies are more recognizable given their high expenses for production and casting. Therefore, audiences choose blockbusters in an effort to reduce the searching cost and to mitigate the possibility of a regrettable choice. This behavior of consumers, in turn, causes distributors to allocate screens for blockbusters, resulting in "concentration of blockbuster consumption." As such, low-budget films cannot easily become popular due to the lack of distribution. Indeed, low-budget films released on a small number of screens often end up becoming dismal failures. However, there are exceptional examples which are contrary to the general idea in the movie industry that a big budget and showings on a large number of screens can guarantee the success of a movie. Although researchers have attempted to analyze the performances of movies with small budgets, such movies are likely to be regarded as outliers and then be entirely discarded, as they are far from the 'three-sigma' range, especially given that previous research methodologies could not explain the financial success of such unique examples. This study attempts to explain the financial success at the box office of low-budget movies by applying the concept of the tunnel effect in quantum mechanics, as the phenomenon found in the movie industry is similar to a particle's movement in quantum physics. The tunneling effect is a phenomenon by which a particle without enough energy to pass over a potential barrier tunnels through it. Adopting the analogy, this study draws a tunneling probability function and cultural constant to forecast other outliers using the Schrödinger equation. Moreover, the study finds that word-of-mouth creates in the movie industry this phenomenon of finding outliers.

  • This paper proposes a new method of weighted template matching for machine-printed numeral recognition. The proposed weighted template matching, which emphasizes the feature of a pattern using adaptive Hamming distance on local feature areas, improves the recognition rate while template matching processes an input image as one global feature. Template matching is vulnerable to random noises that generate ragged outlines of a pattern when it is binarized. This paper offers a method of chain code trimming in order to remove ragged outlines. The method corrects specific chain codes within the chain codes of the inner and the outer contour of a pattern. The experiment compares confusion matrices of both the template matching and the proposed weighted template matching with chain code trimming. The result shows that the proposed method improves fairly the recognition rate of the machine-printed numerals.

  • This Paper aims to explore the key factors that drive box-office success in Korean, Chinese and Japanese film market regarding to the storytelling of the movies. At first, I researched the top 20 movies at the box office of Korean, Chinese and Japanese film market from 2007 to 2011.And then I tried to figure out the key factors for the success and the differences among those countries. Usually the purpose of the movie planning in Korea is for the domestic market. In the profit structure of Korean film industry, it is really hard to focus on the overseas film market. In Chinese film market, recently it has been changed a lot especially film genre. The movie liked to watch is melodrama, romantic comedy movie It is being changed to the comedy genre from the war and martial arts movie. And it is emphasized the importance of the scenario in the film production. They want to watch their lives like a real and dreams at the movie and the movie tries to show this trend. In Japanese film market, they made movies in which TV drama, animation and cartoon according to the O.S.M.U. strategy. The movies like to watch are the blockbuster movies, horror movies, thriller movies and melodrama. Comparing with Korea and China, they like movies which show more fantastic and fairy tale imagination.

  • Recently studies about audio-visual immersion are being carried out due to development of digital video but studies analysing quantitatively the content or climax of video has not carried out. The paper is analysed quantitatively by using shot size, camera angle, camera direction and camera position, objective & subjective which is general component of video expression. We can see the climax effects in the video destroying the principles because there is a rule when they use the component. This thesis analyses shot-list based on video expression in existing movies therefore it can analyse quantitatively several method commonly used in order to make the climax. These suggesting method that can find the part of climax based on analysis of shot-list can be used when you search the specific part of video like long movie or when you search the genre of the movie or when you index the genre. Also it can be very effective in various information services companies offering climax movie which is searched.
