Genetic (Co)variance Components for Body Weight and Body Measurements in Makooei Sheep

  • The aim of this paper was to estimate genetic parameters for body weight and five body measurements for an experimental population of Iranian Makooei sheep maintained at the Makooei Sheep Breeding Station at Makoo, Iran. To do this, yearling live weight (YW), and five body measurements, i.e., body length (BL), heart girth (HG), height at withers (HW), height at back (HB) and scrotal circumference (SC), were analyzed in a multi-trait animal model using the DXMUX program of DFREML software package. Heritability estimates were $0.22{\pm}0.08$, $0.11{\pm}0.06$, $0.21{\pm}0.07$, $0.17{\pm}0.06$, $0.17{\pm}0.06$ and $0.32{\pm}0.10$ for YW, BL, HG, HW, HB and SC, respectively. These estimates indicate that selection in Makooei sheep would generate moderate genetic progress in body weight and body measurements. Scrotal circumference, as an indicator of reproductive potential, exhibited the highest heritability. This trait, therefore, could successfully be used to increase productivity of males and, indirectly, female fertility. Genetic correlations between traits studied were all positive and ranged from 0.15 (YW/HB) to 0.99 (HW/HB). Phenotypic correlations were also positive and ranged from moderate (0.32, HW/SC) to high (0.94, HW/HB). Positive genetic and phenotypic correlations indicate that improvement in body measurements both at the genetic and phenotypic levels is expected through selection on body weight and vice versa.

Variance components estimation for farrowing traits of three purebred pigs in Korea

  • Objective: This study was conducted to estimate breed-specific variance components for total number born (TNB), number born alive (NBA) and mortality rate from birth through weaning including stillbirths (MORT) of three main swine breeds in Korea. In addition, the importance of including maternal genetic and service sire effects in estimation models was evaluated. Methods: Records of farrowing traits from 6,412 Duroc, 18,020 Landrace, and 54,254 Yorkshire sows collected from January 2001 to September 2016 from different farms in Korea were used in the analysis. Animal models and the restricted maximum likelihood method were used to estimate variances in animal genetic, permanent environmental, maternal genetic, service sire and residuals. Results: The heritability estimates ranged from 0.072 to 0.102, 0.090 to 0.099, and 0.109 to 0.121 for TNB; 0.087 to 0.110, 0.088 to 0.100, and 0.099 to 0.107 for NBA; and 0.027 to 0.031, 0.050 to 0.053, and 0.073 to 0.081 for MORT in the Duroc, Landrace and Yorkshire breeds, respectively. The proportion of the total variation due to permanent environmental effects, maternal genetic effects, and service sire effects ranged from 0.042 to 0.088, 0.001 to 0.031, and 0.001 to 0.021, respectively. Spearman rank correlations among models ranged from 0.98 to 0.99, demonstrating that the maternal genetic and service sire effects have small effects on the precision of the breeding value. Conclusion: Models that include additive genetic and permanent environmental effects are suitable for farrowing traits in Duroc, Landrace, and Yorkshire populations in Korea. This breed-specific variance components estimates for litter traits can be utilized for pig improvement programs in Korea.

Construction of Genetic Linkage Map for Korean Soybean Genotypes using Molecular Markers

  • Genetic linkage maps serve the plant geneticist in a number of ways, from marker assisted selection in plant improvement to map-based cloning in molecular genetic research. Genetic map based upon DNA polymorphism is a powerful tool for the study of qualitative and quantitative traits in crops. The objective of this study was to develop genetic linkage map of soybean using the population derived from the cross of Korean soybean cultivar 'Kwangkyo, and wild accession 'IT182305'. Total 1,000 Operon random primers for RAPD marker, 49 combinations of primer for AFLP marker, and 100 Satt primers for SSR marker were used to screen parental polymorphism. Total 341 markers (242 RAPD, 83 AFLP, and 16 SSR markers) was segregated in 85 $\textrm{F}_2$ population. Forty two markers that shown significantly distorted segregation ratio (1:2:1 for codominant or 3:1 for domimant marker) were not used in mapping procedure. A linkage map was constructed by applying the computer program MAPMAKER/EXP 3.0 to the 299 marker data with LOD 4.0 and maximum distance 50 cM. 176 markers were found to be genetically linked and formed 25 linkage groups. Linkage map spanned 2,292.7 cM across all 25 linkage groups. The average linkage distance between pair of markers among all linkage groups was 13.0 cM. The number of markers per linkage group ranged from 2 to 55. The longest linkage group 3 spanned 967.4 cM with 55 makers. This map requires further saturation with more markers and agronomically important traits will be joined over it.

Fuzzy-Genetic Algorithm기반의 자가적응형 돌발상황 검지모형 개발 연구 (Development of a Fuzzy-Genetic Algorithm-based Incident Detection Model with Self-adaptation Capability)

  • 본 연구에서는 기존의 돌발상황 검지모형의 단점인 crisp한 임계값 설정과 타 대상도로에 이식이 어려운 문제점을 보완하는 방법으로 퍼지추론모형과 유전자 알고리즘을 활용하였다. 퍼지추론모형을 이용하여 유고검지 알고리즘의 주요 구성요소들을 설계하였으며, 돌발상황 검지모형 스스로의 적응력(자가적응)과 현장 이식성(移植性)을 극대화하기 위하여 퍼지추론모형의 퍼지소속함수 최적화에 유전자 알고리즘을 적용함으로써 hybrid fuzzy-genetic 형태의 유고검지모형을 개발하였다. 개발된 돌발상황검지모형의 성능은 유전자 알고리즘의 특성상 적응이력과 비례하여 향상될 것이므로 본 연구의 결과만을 가지고 확정적 결론을 내릴 수는 없으나, 잠정적으로 검지율, 오보율, 검지시간 등의 척도에서 기존 성능우수 모형과 대등한 성능을 나타내었다. 본 연구의 초점이 기존 모형의 성능지표 자체의 향상보다는 다양한 도로유형에 공히 적용 가능한 동시에 자가 적응력을 갖도록 하는 실험적 시도에 있었던 만큼 연구는 소기의 성과를 거두었다고 판단되며, 향후 이 분야 연구가 지향해야 할 중요한 방향성 하나를 제시하였다고 판단된다.

더러브렛 경주마의 주파기록에 대한 유전적 개량량의 추정 (Estimation of Genetic Trend on Racing Time of Thoroughbred Racehorses)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 1990년 1월부터 2006년 12월사이에 경주한 9,934두의 주파기록, 총 209,725개를 이용하여 국내 더러브렛 경주마의 유전적 개량량을 추정하는데 있다. 주파기록에 대한 연간 표현형 개량량은 1,000m, 1,400m 이하, 1,700m 이상의 경주거리와 전체 자료에서 각각 -0.148초, -0.137초, -0.137초와 -0.139초였으며, 모든 경주거리에서 감소 추세를 나타내었다. 경주년도별 환경효과의 추세는 모든 경주거리에서 표현형 추세와 거의 일치하였으며, 영구환경효과와 기수효과의 추세는 거의 나타나지 않았다. 연간 유전적 개량량은 1,000 m와 전체 자료에서 각각 -0.037과 -0.030초로 다소 낮은 수치였으나 일괄적인 감소 추세를 나타내었다. 따라서 경주마의 질적 향상을 위한 개량계획을 설정하는 것이 시급한 과제라 생각된다.

효율적인 유전 알고리즘을 활용한 요격미사일 할당 및 교전 일정계획의 최적화 (An Efficient Genetic Algorithm for the Allocation and Engagement Scheduling of Interceptor Missiles)

  • This paper considers the allocation and engagement scheduling problem of interceptor missiles, and the problem was formulated by using MIP (mixed integer programming) in the previous research. The objective of the model is the maximization of total intercept altitude instead of the more conventional objective such as the minimization of surviving target value. The concept of the time window was used to model the engagement situation and a continuous time is assumed for flying times of the both missiles. The MIP formulation of the problem is very complex due to the complexity of the real problem itself. Hence, the finding of an efficient optimal solution procedure seems to be difficult. In this paper, an efficient genetic algorithm is developed by improving a general genetic algorithm. The improvement is achieved by carefully analyzing the structure of the formulation. Specifically, the new algorithm includes an enhanced repair process and a crossover operation which utilizes the idea of the PSO (particle swarm optimization). Then, the algorithm is throughly tested on 50 randomly generated engagement scenarios, and its performance is compared with that of a commercial package and a more general genetic algorithm, respectively. The results indicate that the new algorithm consistently performs better than a general genetic algorithm. Also, the new algorithm generates much better results than those by the commercial package on several test cases when the execution time of the commercial package is limited to 8,000 seconds, which is about two hours and 13 minutes. Moreover, it obtains a solution within 0.13~33.34 seconds depending on the size of scenarios.

Genetic diversity and population structure of mongolian wheat based on SSR markers

  • The production of spring wheat, the major crop in Mongolia, is accounting for 98% of the cultivated area. Collection, conservation and utilization of wheat germplasm resources play an important role in wheat breeding and production in Mongolia. Understanding genetic variability in the existing genebank accessions is important for collection and conservation of wheat germplasms. To determine the genetic diversity and population structure among a representative collection of Mongolian local wheat cultivars and lines, 200 wheat accessions were analyzed with 15 SSR markers distributed throughout the wheat genome. A total of 85 alleles were detected, with 3 to 5 alleles per locus and a mean genetic diversity value of 5.66. The average genetic diversity index was 0.68, with values ranging from 0.37 to 0.80. The 200 Mongolian wheat accessions were divided into two subgroups based on STRUCTURE, un-rooted NJ cluster and principal coordinate analyses. The results from this study will provide important information for future wheat germplasm conservation and improvement programs with Mongolian genebank.

Trends in Heritability of Daily Milk Yield by Periods in Korean Cattle

  • Korean cattle breeders have shown interest in genetic improvement of milking ability because poor milking ability and short suckling period of Korean cattle is a hindrance to growth of calves. In this study, daily milk yields by period in Korean cattle were analyzed with an animal model. The milk yields were actually measured at sequential intervals from 1 to 4 months after calving: daily milk yields from delivery to 1 month (DMY1), from 1 to 2 months (DMY2), from 2 to 3 months (DMY3), and from 3 to 4 months (DMY4). Genetic variance estimates gradually increased by the periods while environmental variance estimates gradually decreased. This resulted in a dramatic increase in the heritability by periods: 0.02 for DMY1, 0.11 for DMY2, 0.16 for DMY3, and 0.42 for DMY4. In multi-trait analyses with daily milk yield and body weight of calf, genetic correlation estimates between milk yield and body weight were quite small (-0.08 to 0.02 for birth weight and -0.10 to 0.00 for weaning weight). The trends of the heritability estimated in this study showed that the genetic effects were more influential when the milking period was longer, suggesting genetic evaluations with daily milk yield collected at a longer period.

유전적 알고리즘을 이용한 동화상의 영역분할 부호화 방법 (A Moving Picture Coding Method Based on Region Segmentation Using Genetic Algorithm)

  • 동화상의 부호화 효율향상을 위하여 유전적 알고리즘(Genetic Algorithm: GA)을 이용하여 영역 분할하는 방법을 제안한다. 유전적 알고리즘은 함수치만을 이용하여 큰 탐색공간으로부터 최적의 조합을 축차적으로 찾아내는 방법이다. 이동추정과 영역분할을 동시에 진행함으로써, 이동 벡터를 화면내의 작은 블록이나 화소의 각각에 할당하고, 그것을 부호화 정보량과 신호 대 잡음비의 관계로부터 최적화 문제로 변환할 수 있다. 즉, 이동보상예측 부호화에는 영역분할과 이동 추정은 서로 밀접하게 관계되어 있다. 이것은 부호량과 S/N비를 최적화하는 것으로서 화면 속의 각 블록에서 이동 벡타를 최적의 상태로 배치하는 것이다. 그러므로, 본 논문에서는 최적인 영역분할 결과를 얻기 위하여 GA의 데이터형과 그 데이터의 처리 방법에 대해서 검토하였다. 또한, 테스트 화상을 이용한 컴퓨터시뮬레이션을 통하여 제안 방법의 유효성을 확인하였다.

Estimation of genetic parameters for temperament in Jeju crossbred horses

  • Objective: Temperament can be defined as a type of behavioral tendency that appears in a relatively stable manner in responses to various external stimuli over time. The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for the records of temperament testing that are used to improve the temperament of Jeju crossbred (Jeju${\times}$Thoroughbred) horses. Methods: This study was conducted using 205 horses (101 females and 104 males) produced between 2010 and 2015. The experimental animals were imprinted and tamed according to the Manual for Horse Taming and Evaluation for Therapeutic Riding Horses and evaluated according to the categories for temperament testing (gentleness, patience, aggressiveness, sensitivity, and friendliness) between 15 months and 18 months of age. Each category was scored on a five-point linear scale. Genetic parameters for the test categories were analyzed using a multi-trait mixed model with repeated records. The ASReml program was used to analyze the data. Results: The heritability of gentleness, patience, aggressiveness, sensitivity and friendliness ranged from 0.08 to 0.53. The standard errors of estimated heritability ranged from 0.13 to 0.17. The test categories showed high genetic correlations with each other, ranging from 0.96 to 0.99 and high repeatability, ranging from 0.70 to 0.73. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the test categories had moderate heritability and high genetic correlations, but additional studies may be necessary to use the results for the improvement programs of the temperament of Jeju crossbred horses.
