  • Real-time 3D visualization of terrain data is one of the important issues in GIS(Geographic Information System) field. We present a real-time terrain rendering engine that can use several types of GIS data source such as DEM(Digital Elevation Map), DTED(Digital Terrain Elevation Data) and LIDAR(Light Detection And Ranging). Our rendering engine is a quadtree-based terrain rendering framework with several acceleration modules. This can generate an ocular and binocular image. Also it can be applied to the flight simulation, walk-through simulation and a variety of GIS applications.

  • A rainfall simulation and forecasting technique that can generate daily rainfall sequences conditional on multi-model ensemble GCMs is developed and applied to data in Korea for the major rainy season. The GCM forecasts are provided by APEC climate center. A Weather State Based Downscaling Model (WSDM) is used to map teleconnections from ocean-atmosphere data or key state variables from numerical integrations of Ocean-Atmosphere General Circulation Models to simulate daily sequences at multiple rain gauges. The method presented is general and is applied to the wet season which is JJA(June-July-August) data in Korea. The sequences of weather states identified by the EM algorithm are shown to correspond to dominant synoptic-scale features of rainfall generating mechanisms. Application of the methodology to seasonal rainfall forecasts using empirical teleconnections and GCM derived climate forecast are discussed.

  • CALNAL team of Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) performed field campaigns for absolute radiometric calibration of 1m satellite image on Daejeon and the cal/val site of Goheung. The satellite image have spatial resolution of 1m in panchromatic spectral band of 450-900nm. The performed cal/val method is the reflectance-based of vicarious calibration methods. We collected ground-based and meteology data such as temperature, surface pressure and reflectance of targets, and radiosonde data used only to test in Goheung. Data collected on each field served as input to radiative transfer codes to generate a top-of-atmosphere(TOA) radiance estimate. Derived TOA is compared with DN of overpass satellite to calculate calibration coefficient of gain and offset.

  • For modeling(skewed) semicircular data, we derive a new exponential family of distributions. We extend it to the l-axial exponential family of distributions by a projection for modeling any arc of arbitrary length. It is straightforward to generate samples from the l-axial exponential family of distributions. Asymptotic result reveals that the linear exponential family of distributions can be used to approximate the l-axial exponential family of distributions. Some trigonometric moments are also derived in closed forms. The maximum likelihood estimation is adopted to estimate model parameters. Some hypotheses tests and confidence intervals are also developed. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test is adopted for a goodness of t test of the l-axial exponential family of distributions. Samples of orientations are used to demonstrate the proposed model.

  • Since land pixels often generate false alarms in ship detection using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), land masking is a necessary step which can be processed by a land area map or water database. However, due to the continuous coastline changes caused by newport, bridge, etc., an updated data should be considered to mask either the land or the oceanic part of SAR. Furthermore, coastal concrete facilities make noise signals, mainly caused by side lobe effect. In this paper, we propose two methods. One is a semi-automatic water body data generation method that consists of terrain correction, thresholding, and median filter. Another is a dynamic land masking method based on water database. Based on water database, it uses a breadth-first search algorithm to find and mask noise signals from coastal concrete facilities. We verified our methods using Sentinel-1 SAR data. The result shows that proposed methods remove maximum 84.42% of false alarms.

  • Terminal cancer patients in Korea have increased due to the development of medical technology and the structural change of diseases resulted from life quality improvement. Following this trend, many hospitals are making efforts, such as renovating hospice wards, but architectural criteria are not sufficiently suggested for specialized hospice wards. The purpose of this study is to present the research data to improve the quality of hospice ward in general hospital. Data collecting skills such as drawing documents analysis, interviews, observation were used to examine the condition of hospice ward. And, case study method was used to generate the design data which can be used for the appropriate spatial composition and the area calculation.

  • Knowledge of the solar radiation components and classified wavelength are essential for modeling many solar energy systems. This is particularly the case for applications that concentrate the incident energy to attain high photo-dynamic efficiency achievable only at the higher intensities. In order to estimate the performance of concentrating solar systems, it is necessary to know the intensity of the beam radiation, as only this components can be concentrated, and The new solar system can generate electricity from ultraviolet and infrared light as well as visible light. The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has began collecting solar radiation components data since January, 1988, and solar radiation classified wavelength data since November, 2008. KIER's solar radiation components and classified wavelength data will be extensively used by concentrating solar system users or designers as well as by research institutes.

  • The National Geographic Information Institute (NGII) in korea, through the National Geographic Information System (NGIS) Program, has prepared to generate and disseminate digital elevation data for Korea. This is a pilot research to propose a policy for production, maintenance, and supply of Korea Digital Elevation Data(KDED). Customer demands for accuracy and resolution of DEM was surveyed through a questionnaire. In order to investigate the quality, the technical efficiency and the production cost, a tentative DEM in a small test site was generated based on digital topographic maps (original paper map scale 1:5,000), analytical plotter, and LIDAR. The Accuracy standard for KDED was derived based on source data generation methods. As a result of this research, a uniformly spaced grid model was recommended for KDED. Its preferable grid space is 5m in urban areas and its vicinity, and 10m in field and mountainous area. LIDAR has been valuated as a proper KDED generation method fulfilling customers' demands for the accuracy.

  • The three-axis road simulator is the test equipment which can simulate the standardized road conditions for the durability evaluation of automotive components such as suspensions. The road load data are collected and acquired from a vehicle test, and then these data are used to simulate road load conditions by the road simulator which consists of hydraulic actuators, link mechanism and servo controller. The link mechanism must be designed in consideration of the dynamic effect and interference during three axes motions in order to generate accurate motions. In this paper, the structural and kinematic analysis of the link mechanism is performed, and these results can be used for developing the three-axis road simulator. The three-axis road simulator provides considerable savings in cost, development time, and testing risk during developing automotive components.

  • The spectral data were collected from the two 600 MHz spectrometers from the two major manufacturers, Broker and Varian. The samples were prepared to create standard curves for quantitative measurements of metabolite concentrations. Instead of employing one-dimensional $^1H$ experiments, the two-dimensional $^1H-^{13}C$ HSQC experiments were performed for better separation of resonances. For some resonances, the high salt condition hindered the linear correlation between the intensity and actual metabolite concentration. Excluding overlapped ones, most resonances showed good linearity. Although the Varian spectrometer showed better linearity, both spectrometers were able to generate acceptable standard curves. From this data, we could identify resonances that could be used to better quantify the concentrations of the particular metabolites. With these standard curves, the quantitative measurements of the metabolites from the real samples will be facilitated.
