Magnaporthe grisea (Hebert) Barr (anamorph: Pyricularia grisea) is a typical heterothallic Ascomycete and the causal agent of rice blast, one of the most destructive diseases on rice (Oryza sativa L.) worldwide. The interactions between cells of the pathogen and those of the host involve a complex of biological influences which can lead to blast disease. The early stages of infection process in particular may be viewed as a sequence of discrete and critical events. These include conidial attachment, gemination, and the formation of an appressorium, a dome-shaped and melanized infection structure. Disruption of this process at any point will result in failure of the pathogen to colonize host tissues. This may offer a new avenue for developing innovative crop protection strategies. To recognize and capture such opportunities, understanding the very bases of the pathogenesis at the cellular and molecular level is prerequisite. Much has been learned about environmental cues and endogenous signaling systems for the early infection-related morphogenesis in M. grisea during last several years. The study of signal transduction system in phytopathogenic filamentous fungi offers distinct advantages over traditional mammalian systems. Mammalian systems often contain multiple copies of important genes active in the same tissue under the same physiological processes. Functional redundancy, alternate gene splicing, and specilized isoforms make defining the role of any single gene difficult. Fungi and animals are closely related kingdoms [3], so inferences between these organisms are often justified. For many genes, fungi frequently possess only a single copy, thus phenotype can be attributed directly to the mutation or deletion of any particular gene of interest.
Arabidopsis mutants deficient in flavonoid and sinapate ester (tt4 and fah1-7, respectively) were evaluated in vivo and in vitro to study the possible role of flavonoid compounds in pollen tube growth. In vivo, we investigated pollen tube growth in the pistils of the mutants and wild type(Ler). The growth of pollen tubes was significantly different among the three genotypes. In the fal1-7 pistils, the tubes grew to a greater length relative to those of the wild type or tt4. To examine in vitro pollen tube growth, a solid medium was devised for pollen germination and subsequent growth. In vitro, the identical result was obtained; fahl-7 pollens developed the longest tubes and elongated most rapidly. Therefore, the growth response of pollen tubes to phenolic compounds was examined by adding quercetin or sinapate ester in various concentrations to the media. Quercetin enhanced both germination rate and tube growth in the pollens of the mutants and the wild type, especially in tt4. In contrast, sinapate ester inhibits pollen germination and pollen tube growth in three genotypes. These results suggest that flavonoids and related phenolic compounds have physiological role in the plant reproductive system.
Storage material of endosperm cells digested by various enzymes should be transported to the embryo. At this time, the cellulose of the endosperm cell wall is guessed to be hydrolyzed by the cellulase enabling to transfer the storage material from the endosperm cells to the embryo. Therefore, this study has been carried out to investigate the ultrastructure of endosperm and the localization of the cellase activity on Cannabis sativa L. during germination. Endosperm cells contain a large number of lipid bodies and protein bodies with globoids as the storage material. During gemination they are gradually degenerated, however, the former almost remain until the cells are completely digested. Electron-microscopical reaction products of cellulase on endosperm cells are present. The closer the embryo, the more amount of reaction products on the endosperm cell wall are appeared.
These studies were undertaken to investigate changes of major components occuring during germination of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) seeds, Changes of total lipid and protein contents, and fatty acid composition were determined. Also, the correponding values of various components in cotyledons, hypocotyls and roots were measured according to germination stage. The results were summarized as follows; During germination, total lipid and protein contents decreased. In particular, protein contents rapidly decreased to the 3 days after gemination(DAG), and then total lipid contents rapidly decreased. In changes of total lipid and protein of cotyledons, hypocotyles and roots detected at the 10, 15 and 20 DAG, some variations were determined. The contents of lipid and protein in hypocotyls rapidly decreased, but since than no changes were observed. In contract, in roots similar changes patterns were observed, while since 15 DAG a rapidly increase was wxamined. In fatty acid composition of total lipid ,saturatedmfatty acids such as palmitic acid increased during the germination. On the other hand, unsaturated fatty acid such as olic acid and linoleic acid decreased during the same periods. In changes of fatty acid composition of total lipid of cotyledons, hypocotlys and roots, saturated fatty acids such as palmitic acid and stearic acid increased during the germination. However, linoleic acid decreased during the same germination suggesting that this may be due to the rapid degradation. However, linoleic acid decreased during the same periods. According to SDS-PAGE analysis, there was no detectible polypeptide bands on the gel before seed germination suggesting that this may be due to the rapid degradation of the storage peotein in the mature seed by hydrolytic enzymes during the stag. As germination continued polypeptide bands, one with 40KD, two with 32∼34Kd and one with 24KD, were detected on the gel.

Developmental dental morphological anomalies are fusion, gemination, twinning, concrescence and etc. They may cause many problems in conservative, periodontal and esthetic aspects. Fusion is a condition where two separate tooth buds unite at some stage in their development to form a bifid crown. If tooth contact occurs early, at least before the start of calcification, the two teeth may be completely unites to form a single large tooth. If tooth contact occurs after the time when a portion of the tooth crown has completed its formation, there may be union of the roots only. In fusion the dentin is always confluent. Fusion teeth is more common in the deciduous than in the permanent dentition. Fused teeth are relatively rare, and are mostly mandibular anterior teeth. Fusion of normal and supernumerary teeth or between normal teeth may occurs. The exact etiology factor of fusion is unknown, but genetic and environmental factors seems to be related. A variety of complications and subsequent treatments have been suggested on this teeth. Periodontal conditions may arise due to a groove formed at the line of fusion of the two teeth. Crowding or Protrusion with potential for malocclusion or delayed eruption of adjacent teeth. Fusion teeth appear in the anterior region, they usually cause esthetic problems. Treatments vary depending on the problem, the location, and the extent of fusion. Treatment of fused teeth has been reported from endodontic, orthodontic, periodontic, surgical and multidisciplinary. This report presents the esthetic improvements by separation of two clinical crowns. Bone reduction or endodontic treatments are not required.

Background: Dehisced ginseng seeds need to be stored at cold temperatures for around 3 months to break their physiological dormancy, and thus, to aid in gemination. In the presence of high moisture in such an environment, seed spoilage and pre-germination may lower seed quality and productivity. To improve seed quality during cold-stratification, the effects of seed dehydration and temperature were tested. Methods and Results: In early December, dehisced ginseng seeds were dehydrated at 4 different levels and stored at $2^{\circ}C$$-2^{\circ}C$, and $-20^{\circ}C$ for 3 months. Germination was carried out on the filter papers moistened with distilled water; emergence of root, shoot, and seed spoilage were assessed. Seed viability was examined by the tetrazolium test. More than 90% of the seeds stored at $2^{\circ}C$ and $-2^{\circ}C$ without drying or endocarp dehydration germinated, but seeds that were dehydrated to have a moisture content (MC) below 31% showed poor germination and lost their viability. In addition, the seeds stored at $-20^{\circ}C$ failed to show effective germination. Conclusions: Seed storage after endocarp dehydration might help to improve seed quality and increase seedling's ability to stand during the spring-sowing of ginseng.

Fusion and gemination are irregularities in tooth development. It is often difficult to differentiate between gemination and fusion and it is common to refer to these anomalies as 'double teeth'. The deciduous teeth are most commonly involved, but in 0.1% of cases permanent teeth are affected, in which case aesthetic, funtional and periodontal problems can result. Double teeth present great difficulties in management and required a multidisciplinary approach. The central groove on the labial and palatal surfaces of a double tooth is extremely prone to caries, therefore early 'fissure sealing' is essential. In permanent dentition, surgical separation of fused teeth may be possible with subsequent orthodontic alignment and restorative treatment as needed to reshape the crown. Reshaping or reduction of a double tooth with a single canal may be attempted by modifying the appearance of the labial groove and the use of composite tints but is often impossible and extraction may be the only alternative. Orthodontic treatment and prosthetic replacement is then required. Implants may be an option for adolescents. The present study describes three clinical cases of double teeth in the position of the maxillary permanent incisors. The first case demonstrates an example of multidisciplinary care including surgical intraoral hemisection, root canal therapy, restorative and orthodontic treatment. The second and third cases describe the external and internal morphology of the two fused teeth by means of three dimensional dental computer tomography.
In order to obtain an easy and effective scarification method for stimulating the seed germination of Korean lawn grass (Zoysia japonica Steud.), sodium hypochlorite (SH), which is used as a commercial bleach and a seed disinfestant, was tested as a chemical scarifier instead of potassium hydroxide (KOH). 1. Scarification with 4% SH for 2 hours followed by 8-hour water-rinse stimulated seed germination more effectively compared to generalized scarification method by KOH treatment. 2. The degree of stimulating seed gemination was different by the various water-rinsing time after SH treatment, but the optimum rinsing time was about 4 to 8 hours. 3. GA treatment after SH scarification stimulated seed germination. However, the stimulation effect of GA was not showed in non-scarified control. 4. SH treatment significantly decreased the percentage of the infection of microflora in seed samples compared to KOH treatment. 5. Under practical seed scarification conditions for stimulating germination of Korean lawn grass seed. SH may have advantages over KOH with respect to ease of preparing, securing and handling.

Dens invaginatus is a rare malformation resulting from invagination of the enamel before calcification has occurred. It is mostly found in permanent maxillary lateral incisors and mandibular teeth are rarely affected by this anomaly. The malformation is estimated to affect between 0.04 % and 10 % of people and has been associated with other abnormalities such as taurodontism, microdontia, gemination and dentinogenesis imperfecta. Dens invaginatus is classified in three types with respect to the depth of invaginatus and has a broad spectrum of morphologic variations. Invagination frequently allows the entry of irritants and microorganism, which usually lead to caries, pulp infection and pulp necrosis. Root canal treatment on such invaginatus tooth may present severe problems because of its complex anatomy of the tooth. Therefore, the early diagnosis of such malformation is crucial and preventive approach is strongly recommended.
