When the periodic cellular structure is loaded or swelling beyond the critical value, the structure may undergo a pattern transformation owing to the local elastic instabilities, thus leading to structural collapse and the structure changing to a new configuration. Based on this deformation-triggered pattern, we have proposed the novel composite gel materials. This designed material is a type of architectural material possessing special mechanical properties. In this study, the mechanical behavior of the composite gel periodic structure with various gel inclusions is studied further through numerical simulations. When pattern transformation occurs, it results in a different elastic relationship compared with the material at untransformed state. Based on the obtained nominal stress versus nominal strain behavior, the Poisson's ratio and corresponding deformed structure patterns, we investigate the performance of designed composite materials and the effects of the uniformly distributed gel inclusions on composite materials. A better understanding of the characteristics of these composite gel materials is a key to develop its potential applications on new soft machines.
Two processing routes (i.e., the gel casting and polymer preform routes) using polymer beads were studied to fabricate porous ceramics with a cellular structure. The gel casting route, comprising the gel casting of a ceramic slurry mixed with polymer beads, was found to be inadequate to produce porous ceramic bodies with a interconnected pore structure, due to complete coating of the slurry on the polymer beads, which left just isolated pores in the final sintered bodies. The polymer preform route, involving the infiltration of a polymer beads preform with the ceramic slurry, successfully produced porous ceramics with a highly interconnected network of spherical pores. The pore size of 250-300 $\mu\textrm{m}$ was demonstrated and the porosity ranged from 82 to 86%. This process is advantageous to control the pore size because it is determined by the sizes of polymer beads used. Another feature is the avoidance of hollow skeleton, giving a high strength.

Thin films of PLZT were prepared on indium tin oxide(ITO) coated glass substrates by sol-gel process and annealed by rapid thermal annealing(RTA) at $750^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes. The crystal structure of PLZT thin films were investigated for a different Zr mol% content. XRD results showed that the crystallographic structure was transitted from tetragonal to rhombohedral structure as Zr mol% increased. Raman spectroscopy results showed that the bands of spectra became broader as the amount of Zr mol% increased and two crystal phase coexisted at 2/55/45 PLZT film. Raman spectroscopy was useful for crystal structure analysis of PLZT thin films.

Four different diisocyanates (IPDI; isophorone diisocyanate, HDI; hexamethylene diisocyanate, HMDI; dicyclohexylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate, and XDI; m-xylylene diisocyanate) were used to prepare polyurethane gel-coats, and the weatherabilities, physical properties, and surface characteristics of the gel-coats were investigated with respect to the chemical structure of the diisocyanates. The weathering test results indicated that all of the diisocyanates used in this study were suitable for use in the preparation of the polyurethane gel-coat. However, the set-to-touch times and physical properties of the polyurethane gel-coat indicated that the cycloaliphatic diisocyanate (IPDI and HMDI) were ideal for the preparation of polyurethane gel-coats.

The solubility and structure of myosin and the properties of pork gel with NaCl, KCl, CaCl2, and MgCl2 were investigated. Myofibrillar proteins (MPs) with phosphate were more solubilized with NaCl than with KCl (p < 0.05). CaCl2 and MgCl2 showed lower MP solubilities than those of NaCl and KCl (p < 0.05). The α-helix content of myosin was lower in KCl, CaCl2, and MgCl2 than in NaCl (p < 0.05). The pH of pork batter decreased in the order of KCl, NaCl, MgCl2, and CaCl2 (p < 0.05). The cooking yield of the pork gel manufactured with monovalent salts was higher than that of the pork gel manufactured with divalent salts (p < 0.05). The pork gel manufactured with KCl and MgCl2 showed lower hardness than that of the pork gel manufactured with NaCl. The solubility and structure of myosin were different with the different chloride salts and those led the different quality properties of pork gel. Therefore, the results of this study can be helpful for understanding the quality properties of low-slat meat products manufactured by replacing sodium chloride with different chloride salts.
The synthesis behavior of nanoporous silica aerogel in the macroporous ceramic structure was observed using TEOS as a source material and glycerol as a DCCA(dry control chemical additive). Silica aerogel in the macroporous ceramic structure were synthesized through a sono-gel process. The wet gel in the macroporous ceramic structure were aged in ethanol for 72 h at $50^{\circ}C$. The aged wet gel was dried under supercritical drying condition. The addition of glycerol has a role of giving the uniform pore size distribution. The reproducibility of aerogel in the macroporous ceramic was improved in the glycerol(0.05 mol%) added to the silica sol and TEOS : $H_2O$=1 : 12.

$xTiO_2$-$ySiO_2$ system photocatalysts were developed by sol-gel method based on the change of production parameters, and their structure of crystallization and the specific surface area were measured. Considering the efficiency of the ethanol and phenol degradation using the catalyst, the conclusions were obtained as follows: By means of X-ray analysis of $xTiO_2$-$ySiO_2$ powder that is obtained from Titanium and Silicon alkoxide by sol-gel process, it is shown that crystal structure of anatase type is a dominating structure and, on the other hand, the structure of rutile also partly exists. The increase of $SiO_2$ contents causes the decrease of the degree of crystallization of the gel, whereas the specific surface area preferentially increases. It is shown that more than 90% of ethanol and phenol are degraded when reaction time is about three and an hours, and the maximum degradation rate of ethanol and phenol is shown in $60TiO_2$-$40SiO_2$ catalyst.
This study was conducted to investigate the quality characteristics of frozen stored mungbean starch gels added with sucrose fatty acid ester (SE). The study showed a delay of gelatinization of mungbean starch by SE addition through the measurements conducted by using Rapid Visco Analyzer (RVA) and Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC). In the color of SE added frozen stored gels, lightness (L) and yellowness (b) values were increased compared to those of values measured from freshly prepared gel, whereas redness (a) value was decreased. The addition of 1% SE on mungbean starch gel prevented the color change during frozen storage. Rupture stress and rupture energy of frozen stored gel was higher than those of freshly prepared gel, whereas rupture strain of frozen stored gel was lower than that of freshly prepared gel. The addition of 1% SE on mungbean starch gel prevented the change of rupture characteristics during frozen storage. Texture profile analysis(TPA) characteristics revealed a significant change of the gel texture during frozen storage by showing an increase of hardness of the frozen stored gels compared to the freshly prepared gels with newly discovered fracturability, which resulted to show a large difference of gel texture by showing the disappearance of adhesiveness and large reduction of cohesivenes. The addition of 1% SE on mungbean starch gel prevented the change of TPA characteristics during frozen storage. Scanning electron micrographs showed that network structure of frozen stored gel was more rough than that of freshly prepared gel, and the addition of 1% SE on mungbean starch gel could suppress the breakdown of network structure. Thus the addition of 1.0% SE on mungbean starch gel was appropriate method for remaining gel characteristics during frozen storage.
The novel Aloe gels were prepared with dewatering and impregnation by soaking (DIS) processing of Aloe vera leaf slice at four different temperatures (25, 35, 45 and $55^{\circ}C$), using dehydration solution of 40% (w/v) polyethylene glycol (PEG4000). The PEG-impregnation to Aloe vera leaf slice during DIS was observed depending on immersion temperature, and the PEG-impregnated Aloe vera gel (PEG-i-AVG) obtained was characterized using $^1H$ NMR, FT-IR, GPC, XRD and TGA. The PEG-i-AVG had the higher levels of Aloe bioactives (glucomannan and O-acetyl contents) and better quality indices by $^1H$ NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy than those of native Aloe gel. Also, the obtained Aloe gel maintained the bimodal patterns in higher molecular weight region by GPC indicating no degradation of polysaccharide from native Aloe gel. The result observed by SEM confirmed a surface modification by forming the porous structure, and TGA result exhibited better thermal stability than that of native Aloe gel. XRD result revealed that the crystalline structure in Aloe gel was led by incorporation of PEG. Significant decrease of %insolubility and high enhancement of water solubility index were observed, respectively, and highly ordered conformation such as a helix structure was also indicated by Congo red reaction. We concluded that the modification effect for enhancing function of native Aloe gel was successfully obtained by DIS process using PEG as a dehydrating agent. These results suggested that this DIS process had a high potential for developing a new minimally processed product from Aloe vera leaf.
We investigated the structural and dielectric properties of PZT(20/80)/PZT(80/20) heterolayered thin films that fabricated by the alkoxide-based Sol-Gel method. PZT(20/80)/PZT(80/20) heterolayered thin films were spin-coated on the Pt/Ti/SiO$_2$/Si substrate with PZT(20/80) film of tetragonal structure and PZT(80/20) film of rhombohedral structure by turns. Each layers were dried to remove the organic materials at 30$0^{\circ}C$ for 30min and sintered at $650^{\circ}C$ for 1hr. This procedure was repeated several times to form PZT(20/80)/PZT(80/20) heterolayered films and thickness of the film obtained by one-times of drying/sintering process was approximately 80-90nm. PZt-1, 3, 5 films with top layer of PZT(20/80) film of tetragonal structure showed fine grain structure and PZT-2, 4, 6 films with top layer of PZT(80/20) film of rhombohedral structure showed the dense grain microstructure without rosette-type. Dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the PZT-6 film were approximaterly 1385 and 3.3% respectively. Increasing the number of coatings remanent polarization was increased and coercive field was decreased and the values of the PZT-6 film were 8.13$\mu$C/cm$^2$and 12.5kV/cm respectively.
