Insight into influence of iron addition in membrane bioreactor on gel layer fouling

  • Membrane fouling in membrane bioreactor (MBR) remains a primary challenge for its wider application. The focus of this study to investigate the influence of iron distribution in activated sludge on gel layer fouling in MBR. Significant reduction in the transmembrane pressure (TMP) rise rates was observed in the presence of iron as result of retarding the gel layer formation time. The spatial distribution of iron had a significant impact on the stratification structure of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) fractions, such as proteins (PN) and polysaccharides (PS). A mitigation of PN or PS from the supernatant to the EPS inner layers was observed in the presence of iron. Compared with the control reactor, the reduction in PN and PS of the supernatant and lower PN/PS rates of the LB-EPS were beneficial to decrease the membrane fouling potential during the gel layer formation. Consequently, the iron addition managed to control gel layer fouling could be a useful strategy in MBR.

  • PVA와 PAA블랜드의 용액주조법을 통하여 겔 고분자 전해질막이 제조되었다. 블랜드 내의 PAA함량은 30에서 80 wt% 사이 범위에서 조절되었다. 겔 고분자 전해질을 이용하여 아연공기전지를 제작하였다. 제조된 겔 고분자 전해질의 기계적, 전기적 특성을 인장실험과 임피던스 실험을 통하여 측정하였다. 아연공기전지의 성능은 current interrupt method와 정전류 방전실험을 통하여 측정하였다. 겔 고분자 전해질 내의 PAA함량이 증가함에 따라 인장강도 및 인장탄성계수가 감소하였다. 반면, PAA함량의 증가에 따라 겔 고분자 전해질막의 이온전도도는 증가하였다. 이와 같은 이온전도도의 증가의 아연공기전지 내에서의 효과는 current interrupt method와 정전류 방전실험에서 확인되었다. PAA함량이 높은 겔 전해질막으로 제조된 전지는 낮은 IR손실과 높은 방전용량을 보였다.

  • Effects of staining, buffer washing and denaturing agents on the transferrability of RNA fractionated on a methylmercury hydroxide-agarose gel to a nitrocellulose membrane were studied. Ethidium bromide staining and ammonium acetate buffer washing inhibited RNA transfer, while 3% HCHO and 0.5 M NaOH treatments stimulated transfer which was negated in the ammonium acetate buffer. Accordingly, maintenance of primary structure of RNA was proved to be essential for transferring RNA from the methylmercury hydroxideagarose gel to the nitrocellulose membrane.

Presence of an Albumin-Like Protein on the Plasma Membrane of Adipocytes Isolated from Korean Cow

  • The main function of adipocytes in various species is to store nutrient energy in the form of triglycerides, and this function may he closely related with hormonal signaling through the plasma membrane of adipocytes. Using SDS-PAGE, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, and a membrane biotinylation technique, we have identified a 55KDa protein (55K protein) from the plasma membrane fraction of adipocytes, with an isoelectric point (pI) of 8.1-8.3. However, this 55K protein was not observed with a two-dimensional gel electrophoresis carried out on plasma membrane fractions prepared from the liver, heart, and kidney tissues. An analysis of the 12 amino acids sequence at the N-terminal of the 55K protein showed that it has a similar sequence to that of bovine serum albumin.

Impacts of sludge retention time on membrane fouling in thermophilic MBR

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the membrane fouling in a thermophilic membrane bioreactor (TMBR) operated different sludge retention times (SRTs). For this purpose, TMBR was operated at four different SRTs (10, 30, 60 and 100 days). Specific cake resistance (${\alpha}$), cake resistance, gel resistance, total resistance, MFI (modified fouling index) and FDR (flux decrease ratio) were calculated for all SRTs. It was observed that flux in the membrane increases with rising SRT although the sludge concentrations in the TMBR increased. The steady state flux was found to be 31.78; 34.70; 39.60 and 43.70 LMH ($Liter/m^2/h$) for the SRTs of 10, 30, 60 and 100 days respectively. The concentrations of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) and soluble microbial product (SMP) decreased with increasing SRT. The membrane fouling rate was higher at shorter SRT and the highest fouling rate appeared at an SRT of 10 d. Both the sludge cake layer and gel layer had contribution to the fouling resistance, but the gel layer resistance value was dominant in all SRTs.

  • The formation of diverse spiral waves was studied in a polyacrylamide gel membrane with ruthenium(4-vinyl-4'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine)bis(2,2'-bipyridine)bis(hexafluorophosphate) by a gas-free Belousov-Zhabotinisky (BZ) reaction system containing 1,4-cyclohexanedione (1,4-CHD). The gel membrane was found to be receptive for observing propagating waves since a clearer wave-train is obtained during a long reaction time without any disturbance from the immobilized metal catalyst which can be dissolved into the highly acidic solution of the BZ system. The distinctive waves in the system basically depend on both $BrO_3$ and 1,4-CHD in the initial phase, and are influenced by the intensity of illumination of visible light.

Organotemplate-free synthesis of ZSM-5 membrane for pervaporation dehydration of isopropanol

  • ZSM-5 membrane was prepared on tubular macroporous ${\alpha}$-alumina support using a different synthesis route. The effects of organic template agent and Si/Al ratio of the synthesis gel on morphology, structure, and separation performance of the ZSM-5 membrane used for dehydration of isopropanol were investigated. High water perm-selectivity ZSM-5 membrane with a thickness of about $3.0{\mu}m$ and a low Si/Al ratio of 10.1 was successfully prepared from organotemplate-free synthesis gel with a molar composition of $SiO_2$ : $0.050Al_2O_3$ : $0.21Na_2O$ : NaF : $51.6H_2O$ at $175^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. The ZSM-5 membrane exhibited high pervaporation performance with a flux of $3.92kg/(m^2{\cdot}h)$ and corresponding separation factor of higher than 10,000 for dehydration of 90 wt.% isopropanol/water mixture at $75^{\circ}C$.

  • 고온에서 수소 분리 회수를 목적으로 silica/alumina 복합 막을 합성하였다. 막의 선택 투과 성능을 향상시키기 위해, sol-gel법에 의한 silica 및 alumina층을 중간층으로 도입하고, 그 위에 강제유동 CVD법에 의한 silica를 합성하였다. Sol-gel법에 의해 ${\alpha}$-alumina tube에 합성한 ${\gamma}$-alumina 및 silica 막은 Knudsen 확산 영역의 많은 mesopore를 포함하고 있어서 수소 선택 분리 막으로는 적합하지 못했다. 하지만, sol-gel법에 의해 합성한 silica/${\gamma}$-alumina층에 강제유동 CVD법으로 silica를 합성한 결과, 질소 투과 영역의 세공이 완전히 제거되어, 높은 수소 선택성을 가지는 복합 막이 형성되었다. 그 막은 온도에 따라 수소 투과 속도가 증가하여 $450^{\circ}C$에서 $5.57{\times}10^{-8}molm^2s^LPa^1$의 수소 투과 속도와, 9.52 kJ/mol의 활성화 에너지를 나타냈다. 분자체 효과에 의해 질소 투과가 완전히 배제되고, 수소만 선택적으로 투과되는 silica/alumina 복합막이 성공적으로 합성된다.

Sol-Gel Encapsulation as Matrix for Potentiometric Nitrite-Selective Membranes Doped with Chloro (5, 10, 15, 20-Tetraphenylporphyrinato) Cobalt (III)

  • Organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel matrices were used as hosts for chloro (5, 10, 15, 20-tetraphenylporphyrinato) cobalt (III) (Co[TPP]Cl), a known ionophore for nitrite. The sol-gel precursor was prepared by the reaction of (3-isocyanopropyl) triethoxysilane with 1,4-butanediol. An appropriate amount of the anion-exchanger, tridodecylmethylammonium chloride (TDMAC) and the plasticizer, tributylphosphate (DBP) were used as membrane additives. On mixing with an acidic catalyst, the sol-state precursors slowly gelled, yielding a membrane in which the active components, Co[TPP]Cl and TDMAC, were encapsulated. The performances of the sol-gel membrane-based electrodes were compared to those of Co[TPP]Cl-based poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane electrodes. Membranes with a molar ratio of Co[TPP]Cl: TDMAC (1 : 0.1) showed reasonable response slopes toward nitrite. The response slopes were typically 53 mV/decade between $10^{-5.4}$ and $10^{-1.0}\;M$. Selectivities toward nitrite over hydrophilic and small anions such as chloride were somewhat inferior to those observed with PVC-based membranes, but selectivities over lipophilic anions were quite similar. Reduced asymmetry potentials due to protein adsorption were found to occur with the sol-gel matrix relative to PVC-based films when the sensors were employed as a detector in flow-through configuration.
