The purpose of this study is to predict the dynamic transmission error of the helical gear system. To do so, the equations of motion in the helical gear system which consists of motor, coupling, gear, torque sensor, and brake are derived. As the input parameters, the mass moment of inertia by a 3D CAD software and the equivalent stiffness of the bearings and shaft are calculated and the coupling stiffness is measured. The static transmission error as an excitation is calculated by in-house program. Dynamic transmission error is predicted by solving the equations of motion. Mode shape, the dynamic mesh force and the bearing force are also calculated. In this analysis, the relationship between the dynamic mesh force and the bearing force and mode shape behavior in gear mesh are checked. As a result, the magnitude of mesh force is highly related with the gear mesh behavior in mode shape. The finite element analysis is conducted to find out the natural frequency of gear system. The natural frequencies by finite element analysis have a good agreement with the results by equation of motion. Finally, dynamic transmission error is measured by the specially designed experiment and the results by equation of motion are validated.

Despite the wide industrial applications of planetary gear trains, the relationship between the design parameters (tooth profile, carrier mass, etc.) and performance (strength, vibration, noise, etc.) remains poorly understood. A significant amount of research has focused on transmission errors, which are measurable performance indicators directly related to the design parameters. Herein, an experimental test rig for a single-stage planetary gear set built using digital angular encoders and gap sensors is described. To study the static and dynamic characteristics of this planetary gear train, the transmission errors and sun gear orbit are analyzed from the data measured under various levels of torque and speed. The transmission errors of the gear train decrease 40% when the speed increases from 30 to 600 rpm with an output torque of 39.2 Nm, and increase 22% when the output torque increases from 19.6 to 39.2 Nm with an input speed of 30 rpm.

When designing a gear drive, designers should specify tolerances reasonably considering accuracy, cost, and manufacturing capability. In field design, however, designers mostly assign adequate tolerance without correlations between parts and assembly, resulting in iterative design dependent on experts know-how. In order to resolve this, the tolerance design system for a cylindrical gear drive is developed both to support tolerance design automation and to synthesize design processes of part and assembly tolerances. In this research, part tolerances are designed with the databases constructed by ISO, Ks, JIS and bearing catalogue, Assemble tolerance, that is, backlash tolerance is designed by synthesizing part design tolerances stochastically using the formulated assembly relations. This system can include part tolerance and fitting accuracy of shaft adn bearing in practical design. In addition, this system provides field-designers with a synthetic guideline for tolerance design of a gear drive.

This paper addresses an analytical approach to the mechanical error analysis of gear train and tolerance design and manufacture of gear train in restricted space considering motor driving torque, driving system inertia, motor acceleration, motor rotor inertia and friction torque. The gear train is designed to have optimum gear ratio in restricted space and each gear is manufactured to have the lowest weight and each gear tooth is heat-treated to have robustness. Based on the small difference between the mechanical error analysis and measurement, gear train design with optimum gear ratio and restricted space and robustness is proposed.

In order to explore the influence of tooth root cracks on the dynamic characteristics of multi-stage planetary gear transmission systems, a concentrated parameter method was used to construct a nonlinear dynamic model of the system with 30-DOF in bending and torsion, taking into account factors such as crack depth, length, angle, error, time-varying meshing stiffness (TVMS), and damping. In the model, the energy method was used to establish a TVMS model with cracks, and the influence of cracks on the TVMS of the system was studied. By using the Runge- Kutta method to calculate the differential equations of system dynamics, a series of system vibration diagrams containing cracks were obtained, and the influence of different crack parameters on the vibration of the system was analyzed. And vibration testing experiments were conducted on the system with planetary gear cracks. The results show that when the gear contains cracks, the TVMS of the system will decrease, and as the cracks intensify, the TVMS will decrease. When cracks appear on the II-stage planetary gear, the system will experience impact effects with intervals of rotation cycles of the II-stage planetary gear. There will be obvious sidebands near the meshing frequency doubling, and the vibration trajectory of the gear will also become disordered. These situations will become more and more obvious as the degree of cracks intensifies. Through experiments, the theoretical results are in good agreement with experimental results, verifying the correctness of the theoretical model. This provides a theoretical basis for fault diagnosis and reliability research of the system.

The design of multi-stage gear drives is a time-consuming process that includes additional design problems, which are not considered in the design of single-stage gear drives. In the previous research works, the authors have proposed a new algorithm to design multi-stage gear drives at the preliminary design phase. The proposed design algorithm automates the design process by integrating the dimensional design and the configuration design process. In the configuration design process, the positions of gears and shafts are determined by minimizing the geometrical volume (size) of a gearbox. However, various types of spatial constraints should be satisfied in practical design situation. To locate input and output shaft in specified positions is the typical example of such problems. In this paper, the authors show the formulations of spatial constraints applied to the design of four-stage gear drives. The design solution shows considerably good results, and the design system is confirmed to be readily applicable to practical design situation.

In this paper, we propose a method for taking into account uncertainties based on the projection on polynomial chaos. Due to the manufacturing and assembly errors, uncertainties in material and geometric properties, the system parameters including assembly defect, damping coefficients, bending stiffness and traction-compression stiffness are uncertain. The proposed method is used to determine the dynamic response of a one-stage spur gear system with uncertainty associated to gear system parameters. An analysis of the effect of these parameters on the one stage gear system dynamic behavior is then treated. The simulation results are obtained by the polynomial chaos method for dynamic analysis under uncertainty. The proposed method is an efficient probabilistic tool for uncertainty propagation. The polynomial chaos results are compared with Monte Carlo simulations.

The gear system is commonly applied in the marine propulsion shafting system using the diesel engine with the power take off/in system and it also is necessary to reduce propeller revolution increasing the propulsion efficiency. The diesel engine has the advantage more than other thermal engines in high thermal efficiency and mobility. But the large vibratory torque which induced by higher combustion pressure is transmitted to these gears. In this paper, the surface durability and bending stress of gear system considering vibratory and transient torque is evaluated by ISO and AGMA regulation. And the influence of these in gear design is investigated with the theoretical analysis and onboard measurement result of torsional vibration.
