  • This study was to develop a simulation model of a compound planetary gear reducer for the final driving shaft using a gear analysis software (KISSsoft, Version 2017, KISSsoft AG, Switzerland). The aim of this study is to analyze transmission error and the tooth load distribution through micro-geometry using the simulation model. The tip and root relief were modified with Micro-geometry in the profile direction, and crowning was modified with Micro-geometry in the lead direction. The transmission error was analyzed using the PPTE (Peak to Peak Transmission Error) value, and the tooth load distribution was analyzed for the concentrated stress on the tooth surface. As a result of modifying tip and relief in the profile direction, the transmission error was reduced up to 40.7%. In the case of modifying crowning in the lead direction, the tooth load was more evenly distributed than before and decreased the stress on the tooth surface. After modifying the profile direction for the 1st and 2nd planetary gear train, the bending and contact safety factors were increased by 31.7% and 17%, and 18.3% and 12.5% respectively. Moreover, the bending and safety factors after modifying lead direction were increased by 59.5% and 32.7%, respectively for the 1st planetary gear train, and 59.6% and 43.6%, respectively for the 2nd planetary gear train. In future studies, the optimal design of a compound planetary gear reducer for the final driving shaft is needed considering both the transmission error and tooth load distribution.

  • Vibration and noise must be considered to maximize the efficiency of a yaw system and reduce the fatigue load acting on a wind turbine. This study investigated a method for analyzing yaw-system vibration based on the change in the load-duration distribution (LDD). A substructure synthesis method was combined with a planetary gear train rotational vibration model and finite element models of the housing and carriers. For the vibration excitation sources, the mass imbalance, gear mesh frequency, and bearing defect frequency were considered, and a critical speed analysis was performed. The analysis results showed that the critical speed did not occur within the operating speed range, but a defect occurred in the bearing of the first-stage planetary gear system. It was found that the bearing stiffness and first natural frequency increased with the LDD load. In addition, no vibration occurred in the operating speed range under any of the LDD loads. Because the rolling bearing stiffness changed with the LDD, it was necessary to consider the LDD when analyzing the wind turbine vibration.

  • A multi-contact tooth meshing model for helical gear pairs considering bearing and shaft deformations is proposed. First, to easily incorporate into the system model, the complicated Harris' bearing force-displacement relationship is simplified applying a linear least square curve fit. Then, effects of shaft and bearing flexibilities on the helical gear meshing behavior are implemented through transformation matrices which contain the helical gear orientation and spatial displacement under loads. Finally, true contact lines between conjugated teeth are approximated applying a modified meshing equation that includes the influence of tooth flank displacement on the tooth contact induced by shaft and bearing displacements. Based on the model, the bearing's force-displacement relation is examined, and the effects of shaft deformation and external load on the multi-contact tooth mesh load distribution are also analyzed. The advantage of this work is, unlike previous works to search true contact lines through time-consuming iterative strategy, to determine true contact lines between conjugated teeth directly with presentation of deformations of bearings and shafts.

  • The rattle noise is the most significant in many kinds of manual gearbox nioses, which is generated at the idle stage of the engine operation. The main torsional vibrat- ion source of the driveline is the fluctuation of the engine torque. The gear rattle is impacts generating in the backlash of the free gear due to this torsional vibration. Many researchers reported the clutch torsional characteristic optimization method to reduce the idle gear rattle but only few of them give sufficient consideration to the system parameters like gear backlash, drag torque, system inertia, inertia distribution, engine torque fluctuation, idle engine rotation speed, and accessory load. In this paper, influence rate of system parameters on the gear rattle is presented and counterplans like backlash reduction, drag torque increase, inertia addition, inertia distribution modification and engine torque characteristic control are suggested.

  • Face gear transmission is widely used in aerospace shunt-confluence transmission system. Tooth wear is one of the main factors affecting its bearing transmission performance. Furthermore, the installation errors of face gear are inevitable. In order to study the wear mechanism of face gear tooth surface with installation errors, based on tooth contact analysis numerical method and Archard wear theory, the UMESHMOTION subroutine in ABAQUS is developed.Combining with Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian adaptive mesh technology, the finite element mesh wear model of abraded face gear pair is established. The preprocessing conditions are set to generate the inp files. Then, the inp files for each corner are imported and batch processed in ABAQUS.The loading tooth contact problem at each rotation angle is solved and the load distribution coefficient among gear tooth, tooth root bending stress, tooth surface contact stress and loaded transmission error are obtained. Results show that the tooth root wear is the most serious and the wear at the pitch cone is close to 0.The wear law of tooth surface along tooth width direction is convex parabola and the wear law along tooth height direction is concave parabola.

  • The wind industry grew in the first decade of the 21st century at rates consistently above 20% a year. For wind turbine, gearbox failure can be extremely costly in terms of repair costs, replacement parts, and in lost power production due to downtime. In this paper, gear tooth micro-modification for the high speed stage was used to compensate for the deformation of the teeth due to load and to ensure a proper meshing to achieve an optimized tooth contact pattern. The gearbox was firstly modeled in a software, and then the various combined tooth modification were presented, and the prediction of transmission under the loaded torque for the helical gear pair was investigated, the normal load distribution and root stress were also obtained and compared before and after tooth modification under one torque. The simulation results showed that the transmission error and normal load distribution under the load can be minimized by the appropriate tooth modification. It is a good approach where the simulated result is used to improve the design before the prototype is available for the test.

  • Nowadays, modern gearboxes are characterized by high torque load demands, low running noise and compact design. Also durability of gearbox is specially a major issue for the industry. For the gearbox which used in wind turbine, gear transmission error(T.E.) is the excitation that leads the tonal noise known as gear whine, and radiated gear whine is also the dominant source of noise in the whole gearbox. In this paper, tooth modification for the high speed stage is used to compensate for the deformation of the teeth due to load and to ensure a proper meshing to achieve an optimized tooth contact pattern. The gearbox is firstly modeled in Romax software, and then the various combination analysis of the tooth modification is presented by using Windows LDP software, and the prediction of transmission error under the loaded torque for the helical gear pair is investigated, the transmission error, contact stress, root stress and load distribution are also calculated and compared before and after tooth modification under one torque condition. The simulation result shows that the transmission error and stress under the loads can be minimized by the appropriate tooth modification.

  • The sub-surface stress field beneath the spur gear's contact surface in lubricated condition has been analysed. The surface pressure was obtained by the elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication analysis using the accurate geometric clearances around the contact region of the teeth. The sub-surface stress field was calculated by using the Love's rectangular patch solution. The analysis results show that the sub-surface stress distribution is quite dependent on the surface pressure distribution. The pattern of sub-surface stress field is similar to that of the external load. The depth where the maximum effective stress occurs is not proportional to the intensity of the external load.

  • Drive systems are composed of spiral bevel gear, axle and bearings. In this paper, drive systems and the part of them are analyzed and a correlation of the factor that shows the geometry of spiral bevel gear is evaluated. The Weibull distribution of probability for survival, which caused by the load of bearings and gear teeth, would be calculated, and the life and reliability with equivalent function could be measured more specifically. The reliability methods are applied as a probability of which the gear drive systems are satisfiably operated.
