The experimental particle samples included ($Mn_{0.1}Fe_{0.9}$)O-$Fe_2O_3$ and FeO-($Gd_{0.1}Fe_{0.9}$)$_2O_3$ with $Mn^{2+}\;and\;Gd^{3+}$ substitutions in inverse spinel $Fe_3O_4$. A lecithin surfactant was adsorbed onto the magnetic particles by ultrasonication. The samples prepared showed excellent dispersibility at the mean size of 13 nm; their saturation magnetization values were 63 emu/g for the bare and Mn-substituted magnetites, and 56 emu/g for the Gd-substituted magnetite. The crystal structure of the substituted magnetites was very similar to that of the bare magnetite, due to a small amount of 0.1 mole fraction substituted in synthesizing the magnetite. The magnetite fluids, according to T2-weighted MR images, effectively diminished the signal intensity in the liver and spleen of Sprague-Dawley rats.
The substituted yttrium iron garnet systems $Y_{ 3-x}$/Gd$_{x}$X$0.2_{0.2}$$Fe_{4.8}$$O _{12}$ (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6) have been investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy and SQUID. The X-ray diffraction patterns at room temperature confirm the samples to have a single phase of the garnet structure over the whole composition range. The lattice constants of all the samples linearly change with increasing x due to the size of substituted ions in the dodecahedral sites. $Y_{3-x}$$Gd_{x}$ X$Fe_{4.8}$$In_{0.2}$$O_{12}$ system which $Y_{3-x}$ ions are substituted with Gd$^{ 3+}$ ions, the Mossbauer spectrum consists of three Zeeman sextets at room temperature, one due to the $Fe^{3+}$ ions on the octahedral(a-) sites and the others due to the $Fe^{3+}$ ions on the tetrahedral(d-, d'-) sites, respectively. From the hysteresis loop measured by means of SQUID over the whole composition range, the saturation magnetization $M_{s}$ and magnetic moments $\mu_{ B}$ per unit cell have been obtained. The increment of Gd-ion content causes $M_{s}$ and $\mu_{B}$ decrease while the increment of In-ion content does not.
Bi4Ti3O12 (BIT) and its rare earth (Y, Nd, Sm, Gd)-substituted derivatives were synthesized using a sol-gel method to investigate their microstructures, cystal structures and electrical properties depending on the subsituted elemetns. Nd- or Sm-substitution into BIT appeared to be favorable, while Y- or Gd-substitution occurred with a pyrochlore phase. This suggests that a smaller trivalent rare earth ion may not be favorable in the structure of BIT. The rare earth derivatives showed that their particle sizes and shapes were considerably different depending on the kinds of substituted elements. Y-substitution resulted in developing a relatively even particle size and a dense microstructure. In structure, they may be similar to the pseudo-orthorhombic BIT but close to a paraelectric tetragonal phase. Their a (or b) axes were shortened, compared to the one of BIT. Such a distortion may result a decrease in the tilting of TiO6. BIT and the derivatives showed that their dielectric constants and losses were 40~120 and less than 0.03, respectively in the frequency range of 1~10 MHz. The dielectric loss of Y-substituted derivative was the lowest one and changed a little to frequency. Curie points were observed in all the derivatives like BIT to suggest that they would be ferroelectric. The temperature stability of the delectric properties of the derivatives below the Curie points were relatively better than the one of BIT.

Gadolinium-substituted bismuth titanate, $Bi_{3.3}Gd_{0.7}Ti_3O_{12}$ (BGT), thin films were successfully fabricated on Pt(111)/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si substrates by a sol-gel method and their structural and ferroelectric properties have been characterized. Fabricated BGT thin films were found to be random orientations, which were confirmed by X-ray diffraction experiment and scanning electron microscope analysis. The remanent polarization ($2P_r$)) of BGT thin film annealed at $720^{\circ}C$ was $25.85\;{\mu}C/cm^2$ at an applied voltage of 5 V. The BGT thin films exhibited a 11 % reduction in their switching charge after no less than $10^{11}$ switching cycles at a frequency of 1 MHz.
We reported a new method to enhance the photoluminescence (PL) properties of $Eu^{3+}$ ions doped $Gd_2Mo_4O_{15}$ phosphors via cation substitution. With the aid of conventional sol-gel method, a series of $Eu^{3+}$ ions doped $Gd_{2(1-x)}Y_{2x}Mo_4O_{15}$ phosphors were prepared. The prepared samples emitted red light when excited at 393 nm. Moreover, when part of the $Gd^{3+}$ ions was substituted by the $Y^{3+}$ ions, the PL emission intensity of the studied samples was enhanced and the optimal doping concentration for $Y^{3+}$ ions was 30 mol%. The calculated CIE coordinate (0.663,0.337) was situated in the red region. Furthermore, the thermal quenching behaviors of the synthesized $Eu^{3+}$ ions doped $Gd_{2(1-x)}Y_{2x}Mo_4O_{15}$ phosphors were studied. At last, we also packaged a red-emitting light-emitting diode device by integrating the obtained phosphors and a near-ultraviolet chip to verify the applications of the $Eu^{3+}$ ions doped $Gd_{2(1-x)}Y_{2x}Mo_4O_{15}$ phosphors for indoor lighting.
Ferroelectric lanthanides-substituted $Bi_4Ti_3O_{12}$$(Bi_{4-x}Ln_xTi_3O_{12}, BLnT)$ thin films approximately 200 nm in thickness were deposited by metal organic chemical vapor deposition onto Pt(111)/Ti/SiO$_2$/Si(100) substrates. Many researchers reported that the lanthanides substitution for Bi in the pseudo-perovskite layer caused the distortion of TiO$_6$ octahedron in the a-b plane accompanied with a shift of the octahedron along the a-axis. In this study, the effect of lanthanides (Ln=Pr, Eu, Gd, Dy)-substitution and crystallization temperature on their ferroelectric properties of bismuth titanate $(Bi_4Ti_3O_{12}, BIT)$ thin films were investigated. As BLnT thin films were substituted to lanthanide elements (Pr, Eu, Gd, Dy) with a smaller ionic radius, the remnant polarization (2P$_r$) values had a tendency to increase and made an exception of the Eu-substituted case because $Bi_{4-x}Eu_xTi_3O_{12}$ (BET) thin films had the smaller grain sizes than the others. In this study, we confirmed that better ferroelectric properties can be expected for films composed of larger grains in bismuth layered peroskite materials. The crystallinity of the thin films was improved and the average grain size increased as the crystallization temperature, increased from 600 to 720$^{\circ}C$. Moreover, the BLnT thin film capacitor is characterized by well-saturated polarization-electric field (P-E) curves with an increase in annealing temperature. The BLnT thin films exhibited no significant degradation of switching charge for at least up to $1.0\times10^{11}$ switching cycles at a frequency of 1 MHz. From these results, we can suggest that the BLnT thin films are the suitable dielectric materials for ferroelectric random access memory applications.
Crystallographic and magnetic properties of perovskite $Gd_{1-x}Sr_xFeO_{3-y}$ (x=0.0, 0.5) substituted $Sr^{2+}$ having larger inoic radius than $Gd^{3+}$ at GdFeO$_3$have been studied by x-ary diffraction, M$\ "{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy, and VSM. The cystal structures are found to be orthorhombic with the lattice parameters : $a_o=5.53\;{\AA},\;b_o=5.608\;{AA},\;C_o=7.724\;{\AA}$ for $Gd_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}FeO_{3-y}$ (x=0.0, 0.5) have been investigated over temperature range from 4.2 to 690 K using the M$\ "{o}$ssbauer technique. The Neel temperatuer of $Gd_{1-x}Sr_xFeO_{3-y}$ system is 690 K with x value of 0.0 and 515 K with x value of 0.5. Analysis of M$\ "{o}$ssbauer spectra Mohr's salt analysis for $Gd_{1-x}Sr_xFeO_{3-y}$ demonstrated the existence of the mixed valence states of iron and the coordination state of $Fe^{3+}$ and $Fe^{4+}$ ions. The Corresponding hyperfine parameters for GdFeO$_3$ are compatible with S=5/2 $Fe^{3+}$ in octahedral cooedination.l cooedination.
In this study, the dispersion stability of CeO2 based complex oxide was studied, and density, porosity, and microstructure of green body were investigated using colloid surface chemistry to manufacture the Gd2O3 doped CeO2 solid electrolyte in an aqueous system. To prepare the stable slurry for slip casting, the dispersion stability was examined as a function of pH using ESA(electrokinetic sonic anplitude) analysis. The dynamic mobility of particles was enhanced with anionic and cationic dispersant were added the amount of 0.5wt% respectively, but pH value in slurries didn't move to below 6.0 because of the influence of dopants. This phenomenon also appeared in the CeO2-Y2O3 and CeO2-Sm2O3 systems, so it could be inferred that rare earth dopants such as Gd2O3, Sm2O3 and Y2O3 not only have the similar motion with changing pH in an aqueous system but also can be dissolved in the range of pH 6.0∼6.5. In CeO2-Gd2O3 system, when the anionic dispersant was added the amount of 0.5wt% and pH value in slurries was fixed at 9.5, the green body density was 4.07g/㎤, and the relative density of sintered body was 95.2%. It could be inferred from XRD analysis that Gd3+ substituted into Ce4+ site because there was no free Gd2O3 peak.

Scandia-stabilized zirconia co-doped with $CeO_2$ is a promising electrolyte for intermediate temperature SOFC, but still shows rapid degradation during a long-term operation. In this study, $CeO_2$ (1 mol%) as a stabilizer is partially substituted with lanthanum oxides ($M_2O_3$, M=Yb, Gd, Sm) to stabilize a cubic phase and thus durability in reducing atmosphere. 0.5M0.5Ce10ScSZ electrolytes were prepared by solid state reaction and sintered at $1450^{\circ}C$ for 10 h to produce dense ceramic specimens. With addition of the lanthanum oxide, 0.5M0.5Ce10ScSZ showed lower degradation rates than 1Ce10ScSZ. Since $Gd_2O_3$ showed the highest ionic conductivity among the co-dopants, an electrolyte-supported cell with 0.5Gd0.5Ce10ScSZ was prepared to compare its long-term performance with that of 1Ce10ScSZ-based cell. Maximum power density of 0.5Gd0.5Ce10ScSZ-based cell was degraded by about 2.3% after 250 h, which was much lower than 1Ce10ScSZ-based cell (4.2%).
We fabricated single cells with a cathode consisting of a $LaNi_{0.6}Fe_{0.4}O_3-Ce_{0.8}Sm_{0.2}O_{1.9}$ composite (LNF-S20DC composite) active layer and an LNF current collecting layer on a ${0.89ZrO_2}-{0.10Sc_2}{O_3}-0.01{Al_2}{O_3}$ electrolyte sheet. The cathode layers were prepared by the screen-printing method. The cathode properties of these cells were measured by the AC impedance method at $800^{\circ}C$. The cathodes with the ceria-LNF composite active layer exhibited high power performance prior to current loading. We investigated the influence of the mixture ratio of LNF and S20DC on the cathodes properties. The Sm in the ceria particles of the composite cathode was substituted with other rare-earth elements. Cathodes with Pr and Gd co-doped ceria in the active layer provided the better performance than those with Sm- or Gd-doped ceria.
