  • The purpose of this study is to analyze parental gatekeeping dimensions(control, encouragement, discouragement) and types of gatekeeping in the two families featured in the drama 「SKY Castle」. Of the 8 types of gatekeeping, the traditional gate blocker(high control, low encouragement, and high discouragement) most often described in the drama, creates a difficult situation for a father trying to participate in child rearing. But traditional gate blockers do not always unnecessarily limit father involvement. In father's coerecive and dictatorial environment, traditional maternal gatekeeping strategies protect her children and create secure environment. The facilitative gate openers(high control, high encouragement, and low discouragement) is the functional gatekeeping type. Because the mother's highly controlling and highly encouraging ways serve as a positive coparenting strategy, the facilitative gate maintain a high level of authority over the amount and type of father involvement.

The main results were as follows. First, in the father's parenting involvement sub-scale, Korean fathers showed a higher value compared to Chinese fathers. Second, Korean mothers had non-traditional parenting beliefs than the Chinese mothers had. Third, in regards to maternal gatekeeping, Chinese mothers more frequently controlled father's parenting than Korean mothers. Fourth, it was found that parenting beliefs and maternal gatekeeping in both countries had a significant influence in father's parenting involvement.

The mediating effect was tested by Baron & Kenny's(1986) four steps. The results of this study were as follows: First, the maternal gatekeeping had a negative effect on the paternal parenting involvement. Second, the maternal gatekeeping consolidated the paternal permissiveness and non interventional child rearing behavior. The mediating effect of marital communication was significantly complete. The marital communication was key factor can help to increase paternal involvement and lead to paternal positive parenting behavior. The discussion included the suggestion for encouraging the paternal involvement and positive child rearing behavior.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the variables that influence paternal parenting behavior. 160 fathers of five-year old preschoolers(85 boys and 75 girls) were recruited from 8 daycare centers located in Seoul, Korea and answered the questionnaire on the subject of attachment experience with their parents of origin based on their retrospective memories, marital satisfaction, spouse's gatekeeping, and their own parenting behavior as fathers cohabiting with their children. Data were analyzed through frequencies, an independent sample t-test, Pearson's correlations, the stepwise regression analyses using SPSS 15.0. The findings are as follows. First, there was no statistically significant difference in paternal parenting behavior according to children's gender. Second, marital satisfaction and attachment experience with their own mothers in childhood influenced all five subcategories of paternal parenting behavior(parental involvement, limit setting, responsiveness, reasoning guidance, intimacy) and spouse's gatekeeping influenced father's reasoning guidance and intimacy. Unexpectedly, attachment experience with their own father had no impact on any subcategories of paternal parenting behavior.

  • This Study has empirically examined the relationship between the role of R & D project leaders and their team performance using data from 87 project teams in 6 R & d organizations. The results reveal that : 1) R & D project leaders play five different roles for performing their jobs-strategic plannar, team builder, gatekeeper, expert and champion : 2) all but the champion role of leaders are positively associated with project team performance unless they have too short team tenure to materialize their role efforts : 3) However, the relationship between the role of leaders and project team performance varies according to characteristics of their team and project tasks. More specifically, it becomes more important for leaders to focus on gatekeeping and championing roles as their team gats older. Team building role of leaders is more important for higher performance of relatively certain R & D projects, while for uncertain R & D projects gatekeeping role appears to be more important.

  • The current study aimed at examining the structural relationships among coparenting, fathers' involvement in child rearing and the children's participation in housework. 154 fathers and their 5th or 6th grade children living in Jeju participated in the study. The data were analyzed using the Structural Equation Model(SEM) technique. The results revealed that when the fathers reported greater alliance in their coparenting, they were more likely to participate in child rearing. Fathers' involvement significantly predicted greater housework participation of their school-aged children. Higher levels of undermining and gate-keeping in coparenting were associated with less father involvement, which in turn, predicted less housework participation by their children. Gatekeeping also directly predicted lower levels of housework of children. Father involvement significantly mediated the relationship between coparenting and children's housework. The implications for the education/intervention programs promoting coparenting and father involvement were further discussed.

Methods: The participants of this study were 291 fathers who had infants ranging from 1-36 months of age and were living in Seoul and South Chungcheong Province. The data were collected through the questionnaires and analyzed using the SPSS 24.0. Results: The main results are as follows. First, gender roles, livelihood keeper-father beliefs, importance of father rearing, and the mother's role as a doorkeeper affect the father's participation in play. This differs according to the characteristics of each type of play. Second, it was found that the father's gender roles and the mother's role as a doorkeeper had a significant effect on the intimacy between the father and the infant. Conclusion/Implications: The results of this study revealed that fathers' belief in gender-equal parenting and mothers' encouragement through opening the door as gatekeepers affect the formation of intimacy between fathers and their children in infancy, and are factors that influence play participation.

  • This study aims to examine the mediating effects of paternal depression on the relationship between traditional gender role attitudes and the perceived maternal gatekeeping roles of fathers with young children. For this purpose, a survey was conducted by 366 married fathers who raises at least one child who is under seven years old. Mplus 7.0 was used to analyze the structural equation model, and the result showed that higher traditional gender role attitudes relate to more depressive symptoms, higher perceptions of maternal gate closing and lower perceptions of maternal gate opening. Also, more depressive symptoms were related to higher perceptions of maternal gate closing and lower perceptions of maternal gate opening. Additionally, the partial mediation effects of depression were observed in the relationship between traditional gender role attitudes and maternal gate keeping. Based on the findings, implications for therapeutic interventions were discussed, and recommendations for future research are presented.
