Recently gasoline direct injection method has been applied to gasoline engine to reduce fuel consumption rate by controlling fuel air mixture on lean condition by means of stratified charging, and to reduce simultaneously. Pollutant emissions especially NOx and CO by lowering the combustion temperature. But difficulty of controling local fuel air ratio at ignition area in flammability limit unavoidably appeared, because it is merely controlled by injection timing with spatial and temporal distribution of fuel mixture. In this study, the authors devised a uniquely shaped combustion chamber so called three-chamber GDI engine, intended to keep the more reliable fuel air ratio at ignition area. The combustion chamber is divided into three regions. The first region is in the rich combustion division, where the fuel is injected from the fuel injection valve and ignited by the spark plug. The second region is in the lean combustion division, where the combustion gas from the rich combustion division flows out and burns on lean condition. And the last region is in the main combustion division ie in the cylinder, where the gas from the above two combustion divisions mixed together and completes the combustion during expansion stroke. They found that the stable range of operation of three-chamber GDI engine on low-load condition exists in the lean area of average equivalence ratio. And they also found that the reformed engine reveals less specific fuel consumption and less pollutant emissions compared with conventional carburettor type gasoline engine.
Engine oil plays an important role in the mechanical lubrication and cooling of a vehicle engine. Recently, engine development has focused on the adoption of gasoline direct injection (GDI) and turbocharging methodology to achieve high-power and high-speed performance. However, oil dilution is a problem for GDI engines. Oil dilution occurs owing to high-pressure fuel injection into the combustion chamber when the engine is cold. The chemical components of engine oil are currently developed to accommodate gasoline fuel; however, bio-alcohol mixtures have become a recent trend in fuel development. Bio-alcohol fuels are alternatives to fossil fuels that can reduce vehicle emissions levels and greenhouse gas pollution. Therefore, the chemical components of engine oil should be improved to accommodate bio-alcohol fuels. This study employs a 2.0 L turbo-gas direct injection (T-GDI) engine in an experiment that dilutes oil with fuel. The experiment utilizes a variety of fuels, including sub-octane gasoline fuel (E0) and a bio-alcohol fuel mixture (Ethanol E3~E7). The results show that the lowest amount of oil dilution occurs when using E3 fuel. Analyzing the diluted engine oil by measuring density and moisture with respect to kinematic viscosity shows that the lowest values of these parameters occur when testing E3 fuel. The reason is confirmed to influence the vapor pressure of the low concentration bio-alcohol-fuel mixture.

Recently new engine system is being required to cope with intensive emission restriction . For this reason, GDI(Gasoline direct injection) engine system which can satisfy both as good fuel economy as diesel engine and the performance to surpass PFI gasoline engine is being development . Since fuel injection system plays a significant role in GDI engine performance, the investigation of the spray characteristics injected from GDI injector above all is indispensable for GDI system development. In this study , spray developing shape was visualized using laser sheet with Nd : YAG laser and atomization characteristics was analyzed by measuring velocities and droplet size with PDA. Utilizing these results , the basic design factor of GDI injector can be offered.

Experimental and analytical studies are presented to characterize the break-up mechanism and atomization processes of the intermittent- impinging-type nozzle. Gasoline jets passing through the circular nozzle with the outlet diameter of 0.4mm and the injection duration of 10ms are impinged on each other. The impingement of fuel jets forms a thin liquid sheet, and the break-up of the liquid sheet produces liquid ligaments and droplets subsequently. The shape of liquid sheets was visualized at various impinging velocities and angles using the planer laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) technique. Based on the Kelvin-Helmholtz wave instability theory, the break-up length of liquid sheets and the droplet diameter are obtained by the theoretical analysis of the sheet disintegration. The mean diameter of droplet is also estimated analytically using the liquid sheet thickness at the edge and the wavelength of the fastest growing wave. The present results indicate that the theoretical results are favorably agreed with the experimental results. The size of droplets decreases after the impingement as the impinging angle or the injection pressure increase. The increment of the injection pressure is more effective than the increment of the impinging angle to reduce the size of droplets.

In this paper, characteristics of a port injection type LPG fuel system were investigated to adopt the system to a spark ignition engine through rig test. Engine combustion characteristics for limited conditions and the precise control method of LPG fuel supply were also studied. As a basic experiment, the effects and the relationships of parameters such as orifice area, fuel delivery pressure, fuel temperature and flow coefficient were established. From this, one dimensional compressible flow equation can be applied to control gaseous fuel flow rate by setting pressure difference between vaporizer and manifold to a certain range, for example about 1.2 bar in a naturally aspirated engine. The combustion analysis results of LPG engine were also compared with those of gasoline engine according to spark timing and load change. At part load and stoichiometric condition, the MBT spark timing of LPG fueled engine is retarded by 2$^{\circ}$ - 4$^{\circ}$CA compared to that of gasoline engine. On the contrary, the spark timing of LPG fueled engine can be advanced by 5$^{\circ}$- 10$^{\circ}$ CA at WOT, which results from higher Octane Number and burned fraction of LPG fuel compared to gasoline.
The aim of this work was to investigate the combustion and nanoparticle emission characteristics of premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) combustion at various test conditions using a single cylinder common-rail diesel engine. In order to create the homogeneity of fuel-air mixture, the premixed fuel (gasoline) was injected into premixing chamber during the intake process and then the diesel fuel was directly injected into the combustion chamber as an ignition source for the gasoline premixture. From these results, it revealed that the ignition delays and combustion durations were gradually prolonged and the peak combustion pressure were increased because diesel fuel was injected early injection timing with the increase of premixed ratio. In addition, as the increase of premixed ratio, total particle number is generally decreased and particle volume also indicated low levels at the direct injection timing from BTDC $20^{\circ}$ to TDC. At further advanced injection timing, total particle number and volume were generally increased

The effects of pressure charge on combustion stability and emissions have been analyzed using a GDI single cylinder engine. A late injection mode of stratified condition at the air-fuel ratio of 40:1 for 1200∼2400 rpm was tested while the boosted pressure ratio was increased up to 1.5:1. In-cylinder CFD analysis was also performed for better understanding of in-cylinder flow and fuel spray behavior. With a higher boosted pressure ratio the IMEP was increased greatly due to the increased engine load, and the ISFC was improved by more than 10% at all engine speeds. The regime of stable stratified combustion was extended to a higher engine speed, but the spark ignition angle had to be more advanced for stable combustion. The emissions of ISHC and ISNOx did not show a particular trend for the increased engine speed but a general trend of lower ISHC and higher ISNOx for a gasoline engine.

This work has investigated the exhaust emissions such as Total Hydrocarbon (THC), Nitrogen Oxides(NOx), and Particulate Matter (PM) characteristics emitted from the tail-pipe of a continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) gasoline-fueled engine with different intake valve opening timings and injection pressures at the part load condition. Valve overlap period was varied from $40^{\circ}CA$ to $10^{\circ}CA$ and fuel injection pressure was increased from 3.5 bar to 5.0 bar. THC and NOx emissions decreased as intake valve opening timing was advanced regardless of fuel injection pressure. When the fuel was injected with the condition of 5.0 bar at all of valve overlap ranges, THC levels were reduced by 55%. NOx concentrations were diminished about 75% as valve overlap increased. PM size distributions were analyzed as bi-modal type of the nucleation and accumulation mode. Comparing with fuel injection pressures, PM emission levels were decreased at high pressure injection of 5.0 bar condition.

Recently GDI(Gasoline Direct Injection) engine is spotlighted to achieve higher thermal efficiency under partial loads and better performance at full loads. To realize this system, it is essential to make both stratified combustion and homogeneous combustion. When compared to PFI(Port Fuel Injection) engine, GDI engine needs more complicated control and optimal design with injection system. In addition, spray pattern must be optimized according to injection timing because ambient pressure in combustion chamber is also varied. Thus spray structure should be analyzed in details to meet various conditions. In this experimental study, two types of visualization system were developed to simulate compression stroke and intake stroke, respectively. With an increase of the ambient pressure, the penetration length tends to decrease due to rising resistance caused by the drag force of the ambient air. Spray characteristics impinged on the piston has a significant effect on mixture stratification around the spark plug. These results provide the information on macroscopic spray structure and design factors far developing GDI injector.

As the environmental pollution becomes serious global problem, the regulation of emission exhausted from automobiles is strengthened. Therefore, it is very important to know how to reduce the NOx and PM simultaneously in diesel engines, which has lot of merits such as high thermal efficiency, low fuel consumption and durability. By this reason, the new concept called as Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition(HCCI) engines are spotlighted because this concept reduced NOx and P.M. simultaneously. However, there is trade off between output and NOx in a HCCI engine. In this study, output and emission characteristics for a gasoline direct injection type HCCI engine were investigated to clarify the effects of intake air temperature, injection time and mixture formation. From these experiments, we found that the smoke was not produced when the fuel was injected earlier than BTDC 90$^{\circ}$. In addition, the output was increased because of delay of ignition time and NOx emission was decreased because of homogeneous charge of first injection in case of split injection.
