Purpose - This study conducts an empirical analysis on gasoline pricing of Korean retail gas stations focusing on spatial effects. Unlike previous studies, the study uses an official land price for a proxy of the importance of location, and also allows the spatial effects from other competing gas stations as well. Research design, data, and methodology - In collection of data, we obtain more abundant data than those of previous studies. The gasoline prices used in the study are 909,084 observations as daily data from January 1 to July 31 of the year 2016. A proxy for the land price is collected by linking official public land price data with address information on each gas station. For the estimation, the study employs the Panel Spatial Dubin Model to make the best use of the collected location information. Results - As expected, spatial properties of gas stations have significant effects on the gasoline price. As the price per square meter increases by 100 thousands won, the price of gasoline rises 9 won per liter. Among other characteristics, the price increases by 16 won per liter if the station has a convenience store, and about 5 won if it has a car wash service. Gasoline price in Singapore accounted for 26% of variations in domestic gasoline prices. SK Energy and GS Caltex are the top brands in terms of price. The study also finds prices and other important properties of competing gas stations have significant effects on others' prices. Prices of competing gas station have a positive relationship with those of others. If a competing gas station raises the price, the gas station also raises the price, and lowering the price lower the price. Among brands, GS Caltex has the greatest downward pressure on nearby gas stations. Conclusions - The study confirms that location value of gas stations affect their gasoline prices, and the prices of the competing gas stations also have a significant effects on their prices. It suggests that the prices in the competing retail areas tend to be synchronized with each other.
This study empirically analyzes that the asymmetry of domestic gasoline price adjustment to the crude oil price changes can vary depending on the level of gasoline price using quantile autoregressive distributed lag model. The data used are the weekly average Dubai price, domestic gasoline price at refiners and gas stations from the first week of May 2008 to the second week of October 2022. The study estimates three price transmission channels: changes in gas station gasoline prices in response to changes in Dubai oil prices, changes in refiners gasoline prices in response to changes in Dubai oil prices, and changes in gas station prices relative to refiners gasoline prices. As a result, the price adjustment of refiner's gasoline price with respect to Dubai oil price appears asymmetrically across all quantiles of gasoline price, whereas the adjustment of gas station prices for Dubai oil price and refiner's gasoline price tend to be more asymmetric as the quantile of gasoline price increases. Such a result is presumed to be due to changes in the inventory cost of gas stations. When the burden of inventory cost is high, gas stations have an incentive to more actively pass the increased buying price on their selling price.
This paper investigates effect of gasoline price liberalization on price elasticity of gasoline demand. By using a model where a consumer optimizes her gasoline consumption and number of visits to gas station, we derive price elasticity of gasoline demand and its response to variation of size and frequency in price changes. It shows that price elasticity is decreased with increase in the size and frequency when the price rises. Since price liberalization increases the frequency but reduces the size, the effect of the liberalization on the price elasticity may not be determined. However, price liberalization can make the elasticity higher when the size reduction effect exceeds the frequency increase effect, which is consistent with empirical evidence provided by existing studies.
This paper analyzes competition among service stations in the Korean gasoline market. We consider spatial differentiation as a source of product differentiation as well as the characteristics of the stations and vertical contracts between refiners and retailers as factors causing changes in equilibrium prices in the Korean gasoline retail market. The effect of the government's price disclosure policy on the retail market competition is also analyzed. Moran's I test indicates that the prices of neighboring gas stations are spatially correlated in the market. It is also found that gasoline prices for vertically integrated stations are much lower than those for independent stations. In addition, unbranded stations charge lower prices than branded stations but also induce branded stations to price more competitively. Meanwhile, the government's price disclosure policy did intensify price competition in the retail gasoline market. It is inferred that the price disclosure policy contributed to retailers gaining more bargain power in price negotiation with refiners, causing an eventual increase in retail prices.
Purpose - This study examines the effects of Dubai oil price and the volatility on the asymmetry of domestic gasoline price adjustment. Additionally, the study investigates the effects of "Altteul" gas-station and tax-cut policies on asymmetry. Design/methodology/approach - Firstly, the study calculates proxies for asymmetry and volatility of each window(every 3-month) by error-correction model and GARCH(1, 1) using daily domestic gas price and Dubai oil price from 2008/04/15 to 2022/12/31. Secondly, the study investigates the effects of the increasing rate of Dubai oil price, volatility, "Altteul" gas-station and tax-cut policies on asymmetry. The autoregressive distributed lag regression model is employed for estimations. Findings - The study finds that changes in the increasing rate of Dubai oil price and both types of volatility of Dubai oil price increase asymmetry. While "Altteul" gas-station and tax-cut policies decrease asymmetry. Additionally, the study fails to find that asymmetry in the Korean gasoline market in the estimation with total observations. Research implications or Originality - An increase in Dubai oil price volatility means an increase in cost uncertainty for gas-station owners. Since cost uncertainty is a kind of financial risk, the increase in volatility reinforces the asymmetry. The study provides supporting evidence for the idea.
This paper analyzes a price discovery process for gasoline among branded and independent stations in Korea using a vector error correction model (VECM) and directed acyclic graphs (DAG). Two data sets for daily prices of medium level gasoline running from April 15, 2008 to May 31, 2009 and from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2011 are used for empirical analysis. Empirical results show that S-OIL has an exogeneity and played a important role in the flow of price information in the market in the first period. In the second period, SK energy played a key role in price discovery process in the market. The price of NH-OIL stations do not cause the price of any other stations, which implies that the entrance of new branded stations with lower gasoline price to market has no influence on gasoline prices of retail markets.
This study empirically examines how asymmetric price adjustment of the retail gas price happens differently for various oil products, such as high-grade gasoline, regular gasoline, and diesel, by employing asymmetric error correction model within weekly data set from 2010~2015. Our estimation results show that the price adjustment, across the all oil types, predicated on shifting crude oil and wholesale oil prices is asymmetric. In addition, the duration of asymmetry was shorter in high-grade gasoline case than in other oil types. This took place by rapid price adjustment of high-grade gasoline price when faced with both cost increases and decreases, in comparison with regular gasoline and diesel cases. There results were attributed by characteristics of the consumer group and a high retail-wholesale margin of high-grade gasoline.
This paper estimates the gasoline price elasticities of demand for automobile fuel efficiency in Korea to examine indirectly whether the government policy of raising fuel prices is effective in inducing less consumption of fuel, relying on a hedonic technique developed by Atkinson and Halvorsen (1984). One of the advantages of this technique is that the data for a single year, without involving variation in the price of gasoline, is sufficient in implementing this study. Moreover. this technique enables us to circumvent the multicollinearity problem, which had reduced reliability of the results in previous hedonic studies. The estimated elasticities of dam and for fuel efficiency with respect to the price of gasoline, on average, is 0.42.
This study aims to reveal the influence of price increase in gasoline on household expenditure trade-off. The subjects were 651 households, acquired the first quarter of 1996 and 1997. This study shows the change of the auto fuel budget share in the same household and they were analyzed with the paired t-test, independent t-test. The results are as follows; 1) the price increase of auto gasoline resulted in the increase of its budget share, regardless of a household's true increase or decrease of income. 2) according to price increase in gasoline, the auto fuel budget share has been changed, therefore I divided these changes into three group on the base of it's degree of change. 3) In the group that had a decrease in auto fuel budget share compared to the degree of change, there was a trade-off between the increase in food and light & light water and the decrease of education and auto fuel budget share. Auto fuel in this group was used as discretionary good. 4) In the group that had a similar change in auto fuel budget share compared to the degree of change, there were no trade-off between expenditure items except auto fuel budget share and miscellaneous decrease. This group is the highest income group among the three groups. 5) In the group that had and increase of change in auto fuel budget share compared to the degree of change, there was a trade-off between the increase of eating-out and auto fuel, and the decrease of education and miscellaneous budget share. Auto fuel in this group was used as a discretionary good. 6) trade-off expenditure budget share showed a mixed effect between the influence of increase in gasoline price and influence of increase in true income.
We employ a threshold vector error correction models (TVECM) to investigate the nonlinear dynamic adjustment of gasoline prices in Korea. We consider 10 regional gasoline markets including Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Incheon, Kwangju, Daejeon, Ulsan, Kangwon, Chungbuk, Jeonbuk and construct 9 price differences against Seoul. We use the bootstrap procedure suggested by Hansen (1999) and generalized by Lo and Zivot (2001) to show that three-regime TVECM is suitable for our analysis. Results indicate the gasoline price adjustment processes are nonlinear. Our estimation shows that Seoul-Daejeon, Seoul-Daegu and Seoul-Ulsan have bigger transaction costs than other market pairs and thus gasoline prices of these three regional markets are lower than that of Seoul. Gasoline prices of the other 6 regional markets are close to Seoul's price. One interesting finding is that the transaction costs are not proportional to geographical distances. This implies that transportation costs are not the main factor of the transaction costs. The transaction costs may depends on the competition intensity of gasoline markets in supply side.
